Mumpel's birthday - Mumpels Geburtstag

Wir haben Mumpel's Geburtstag gefeiert! Die Vorbereitungen dafür waren in diesem Jahr ein bisschen schwierig für mich, weil ich am Tag vorher eine ausgemachte Migräne hatte, leider zum zweiten Mal in vier Wochen. Ich hatte aber zum Glück beim Einpacken tatkräftige Unterstützung und so hat alles gut geklappt. 

We have celebrated Mumpel's birthday. For me, this year's preparations for her birthday were difficult because the day before her birthday I had such a bad migraine for the second time in only four weeks it was not nice at all. I was lucky though to have Thomas and Rob, the two of them helped me.

 Ich male den Kindern meist selbst eine Geburtstagskarte. In diesem Jahr ist Michael drauf wie er mit dem Drachen kämpft. Dazu gab es zwei kleine Malbücher.

I usually draw a birthday card for the kids. This year I drew Michael's fight against the dragon. Mumpel got two little coloring books.

 Nachmittags haben wir mit Oma und Opa gefeiert und abends gab es dann Raclette, wie Mumpel es sich gewünscht hat. Ich glaube, sie fand den Tag wirklich schön. 

In the afternoon we celebrated with grandpa and grandma and in the evening we did Raclette as she wished to do that. I think Mumpel had a nice day.

St. Michael - Michaeli

Heute ist Michaelstag. Mumpel hat uns ein Tafelbild dazu gemalt, das wir aufgestellt haben; davor haben wir Kerzen aufgestellt und mit Kiefernzapfen dekoriert. Die Zapfen hat Mumpel am Tag zuvor mit Oma auf einem Spaziergang gesammelt. 

Today is St. Michael's day and Mumpel drew us a chalk picture that we put up. We decorated the space in front of her picture with pine cones. Mumpel collected them the day before when she visited grandma and went for a walk with her.

In diesem Heft haben wir eine Geschichte zum Michael gelesen.
We read in this little magazine a story of St. Michael. 

 

Gestern haben wir noch bis spät abends gebacken. Ich habe bei "hellrosagrau" auf Instagram diesen tollen gebackenen Michaelsdrachen gefunden und den haben wir nachgeformt. Wir haben dafür unser eigenes Hefebrot-Rezept genommen und dem Teig Kräuter aus unserem Garten beigegeben. Es ist also sozusagen ein Kräuterdrache geworden. 

Until late last night we baked for St. Michael. On instagram I found a page called "hellrosagrau" and the woman who does the page baked this wonderful dragon. We tried to form the same beautiful dragon. We made it from our own yeast bread recipe and we put herbs from our garden into the dough. I suppose you could say it became a herbal dragon. 

 Auch zu Michaeli darf das Feuerchen nicht fehlen.

Es hat den ganzen Tag lang geregnet und erst nach sechs Uhr abends ist der Himmel aufgeklart. Zum Feuer machen hatten wir also eine schöne Regenpause und konnten uns diese tollen Schäfchenwolken anschauen. Die Sonne ist auch noch erahnbar. 

It had been raining all day long and only after six o'clock at night the sky cleared up and we we had a rain pause while doing our barbecue. Aren't those the nicest fluffy clouds? Even the sun was kind of there. 

 Kein Fleisch heute, sondern vegane Bratlinge.

No meat today but vegan patties. 

 So sieht der Drache gebacken aus. Er hat wunderbar nach Hefe und Kräutern gerochen.

Green Juice - Grüner Saft

Am heutigen Tage ist alles ein bisschen kürzer gekommen. Wir haben alle ganz gespannt auf die Ankunft unseres Entsafters gewartet. Seit acht Jahren überlege ich an einem Entsafter herum, habe den Gedanken aber immer wieder verworfen weil wir ja einen Mixer haben. Wir haben immer viele grüne Smoothies gemacht, doch ich mag die Konsistenz nicht mehr leiden. Jetzt war es also so weit und ich habe mich durchgerungen, einen Entsafter zu kaufen, der vor allem Grünzeug entsaften soll. 

Today all our usual routines missed out a bit. We had all been waiting for our juicer to arrive and this was finally the day! I've been wanting such a machine for eight years now and never bought it. We use to make a lot of green smoothies to keep us healthy but I don't like the consistency andy more. So we got a juicer now and we got it to juice mainly greens.

Wir waren ganz schön gespannt, denn eigentlich sollte das Gerät schon am Samstag geliefert werden, doch es hat sich auf Montag verschoben. Die Spulen pressen das Gemüse und Obst horizontal aus. Die Kinder haben geholfen, erstmal zu schauen, wie was zusammengehört und wie man es zur Reinigung wieder auseinander bauen kann. 

We were all pretty excited because actually the juicer was due on saturday but it didn't get here so we had to wait until monday. These two coils press all the juice out of veggies and fruit. The kids helped me to find out how to put it all together and what to do once it comes to cleaning it.

 Wir haben ihn natürlich sofort ausprobiert, Mumpel hat Fotos dazu gemacht. Wir haben Stangensellerie, Möhren und einen Apfel genommen und siehe da - er funktioniert!

We tried it right away, Mumpel took some pictures. We put celery, carrots and one apple in and look at it - it does work!

Nach dem Entsaften muss sofort die Maschine auseinandergebaut und gesäubert werden. Die Siebe an den Spulen und dem Gehäuse sind so fein, dass man sie nicht mehr sauber bekommt, wenn man das Gemüse erst antrocknen lässt. Weil das bei diesem Mixer angeblich so viel Arbeit ist, habe ich mich lange dagegen entschieden. Doch obwohl ich noch keinerlei Routine habe, hat das auseinander bauen und reinigen nur fünf Minuten gedauert! Ich war total begeistert. 

After juicing we had to immediately disassemble and clean the machine so the marc cannot dry off in sieve and coils because if it does dry it is hard to clean everything. That's one of the reasons that kept me from buying this juicer: the work that they all said it takes to clean it. But I can tell you I am so thrilled: I had no experience with cleaning it and it took me just five minutes!

Als nächstes haben wir uns gefragt, was wir wohl aus dem Trester machen können. Dafür haben wir auch eine Idee gehabt: wir haben sie zu Crackern verarbeitet. 

Next we thought about what we could do with the marc and we found a solution - we made crackers from it.

 

Für die Cracker haben wir den Trester mit Salz, Pfeffer, gekörnter Brühe, Sesam, eingeweichten Leinsamen, Cashewmus und Koriander, Paprikapulver und Schabziger Klee gemischt und zu kleinen Bällchen geformt. Die Bällchen werden dann plattgedrückt und bei 130 Grad Umluft ca. 20-30 Minuten gebacken. Die Backdauer hängt von der Dicke der Cracker ab, je dünner sie sind, desto kürzer wird die Backzeit. 

We mixed the marc with salt, pepper, broth, sesame seeds, soaked linseeds, cashew creme and coriander, paprica powder and blue fenugreek. We made little balls from the mix and pressed them. We baked them in the oven for about 20-30 minutes. The more the crackers are pressed, the least time they have to spend in the oven baking.

Wir haben dann tatsächlich abends auch noch einen Michaeli-Drachen für den folgenden Tag gebacken, aber den zeige ich Euch morgen.

Spruce cones and Duckweed - Fichtenzapfen und Entengrütze

Heute früh haben wir einen Ausflug in den Wald gemacht. Ich wollte unbedingt neue Fichtenzapfen sammeln, die ich dann zur Dekoration nutze. Letztes Jahr haben wir ganz viele gesammelt und Anfang des Jahres habe ich sie - dummerweise - weggeschmissen, weil ich sie nach den langen Wochen nicht mehr sehen konnte. Ich habe in dem Moment überhaupt nicht mehr darüber nachgedacht, dass es wegen des Borkenkäfers immer weniger Fichten, also auch Zapfen geben wird. Man sieht ja schon riesige Kahlstellen in diversen Waldgebieten, die der Abholzung anheim gefallen sind. Wir haben aber noch einen Korb voll gefunden und diese werden jedenfalls eingelagert und nicht weggeschmissen, wenn die Deko geändert wird!

This morning we went into the forest. I wanted to collect spruce cones to use them for decoration. We collected many of them last fall and then at the beginning of 2020 I got sick of them and - stupidly - threw them away. Back then I didn't think of the bark beetle and the fact that it slowly but surely destroys all spruces in the area. We can see huge clear cuttings of spruces that had to be taken down so in a while there will be no spruces at all left. Luckily we weren't too late and found quite many. This time I will definitely not throw them away when decoration needs to be changed!

 

An diesem Teich mit Entengrütze sind wir vorbeigekommen. Wir hatten Glück, dass wir nicht pitschnass wieder zurück mussten. Im Moment ist für jeden einzelnen Tag Regen angesagt. Zwischendurch hört es mal auf zu regnen und diese Zeiten versuchen wir zu nutzen, um mal vor die Tür zu kommen. Die Fichtenzapfen sind natürlich alle nass und müssen zu Hause getrocknet werden. 

We passed this pond with duckweed in it. We were lucky to not come home all wet from the rain. At the time it is raining for hours each day and it is supposed to stay like that for two more weeks. Whenever the rain takes a break we go outside to the forest. The spruce cones are of course all wet and need to be dried at home.

Danach haben wir es uns auf der Couch bei Tee gemütlich gemacht und gelesen (Unbeauftragte Werbung).

New book and Inuit - Neues Buch und Inuit

Gestern abend haben wir wieder im Garten gearbeitet. Die Sumpfeiche legt ihr Laubkleid ab und wir haben die Blätter zusammengerecht und aufgelesen. Einen Teil davon werde ich als Deko hernehmen. 

Yesterday we worked a bit in the garden. The swamp oak is losing all its leaves and we collected them from the lawn. I will take part of them for decoration.

Diese Woche haben wir angefangen, ein neues Buch zu lesen. Ich habe uns die Originalfassung von Nils Holgersson bestellt und bin durch Zufall auf "Die andere Bibliothek" gestossen, deren Konzept ich sehr sehr gut finde. Klassiker wie auch Neuerscheinungen werden sorgfältig ausgewählt und in ästhetisch ansprechender Weise neu aufgelegt. Wer Interesse hat, kann sich über den Link die andere Bibliothek mal anschauen. Ich denke, wir haben dort nicht zum letzten Mal bestellt. 

This week we started to read a new book together. I found the original of Selma Lagerlöfs "Nils Holgersson" and per coincidence I came across a german online library I never heard of before. It is called "The other library". They print classics as well as new books but they are all well chosen, they don't simply print everything. Each book is put together in a beautiful and esthetic looking way. I think this was not our last order there. 

 

 

Diese Originalfassung gefällt uns sehr gut, was zum einen sicherlich an der schönen Erzähweise Selma Lagerlöfs liegt, zum anderen an der Aufmachung des Buches. Auf fast jeder Seite sind Bilder im gleichen Stil zu finden. Schrift und Bilder sind in dunkelblau gedruckt, unten auf jeder Seite steht das jeweilige Kapitel. Es macht Spaß, schöne und schön aufgemachte Bücher zu lesen!

We really like this original, partly due to the very nice way of storytelling of the author Selma Lagerlöf and partly because of the nice esthetics of the book. On nearly each page we find pictures. Scripture and pictures are both printed in a dark blue color. At the bottom of each page you can find the name of the chapter. It is fun to read such nice and beautiful books!

 

Ich habe vor vielen Jahren eine sehr gekürzte, vereinfachte Fassung für die Kinder gekauft. Damals habe ich auf Original oder nicht Original noch nicht geachtet, mich aber gewundert, warum manche Dinge sich nicht erklärten und neblig erschienen. Heute würde ich das nicht mehr kaufen, die Sprache ist in diesem Original viel schöner. 

Many years ago I bought a very much shortened version of the book with a changed and much more easy script. Back then I didn't think about original book versions but I did wonder why in the story many things seemed to need an extra explanation as they seemed a bit non fitting. I would nowadays not buy such books again, the way the author tells the story in this original is much nicer.

In diesem Zusammenhang haben wir uns auch die beiden Polargebiete angeschaut und ihre jeweilige Tierwelt. 

In this context we also looked at the two poles or polar regions and its wildlife. 

 Auf unserem Spaziergang haben wir Haflinger auf der Weide vor dem Wald gesehen. 

Going for a walk we saw Haflingers on the pasture in front of the forest. 

 

 Außerdem haben wir diese wunderschön blühenden Malven gefunden und einen Zweig abgemacht. Vielleicht lässt sich ja ein Steckling draus machen. Dann pflanzen wir die Malve ein. 

We also found this beautiful mallow and we took a tiny little branch home. Maybe the cutting gets roots, if it does, we will plant it into the garden.

Autumn equinox - Herbst Tag- und Nachtgleiche

Heute habe ich ein paar Bilder von unserer kleinen Familienfeier zur Herbst Tag-und Nachtgleiche für Euch. Feiert Ihr deses Datum auch? Wir haben zusammen draußen gesessen und gegessen und ein Feuer gemacht. Das ging an dem Tag noch, schon gestern wurde es dann deutlich kühler. 

Today I have a couple of pictures of our little family celebration for autumn equinox for you. Do you celebrate this date? We sat outside that night and had dinner and lit a fire. Two days ago that was possible but now it has cooled down quite a bit. 

 

Mittags habe ich schon angefangen, die Kürbissuppe vorzubereiten. Das war unser letzter eigener Hokkaido. Leider war die Pflanze von so vielen weißen Fliegen befallen, die den Mehltau übertragen, dass ich sie raus gemacht habe. Das ist sehr schade, denn es kamen noch drei Kürbisse, doch der Mehltau war leider auch schon auf andere umliegende Pflanzen übergegangen.

Around noon I started preparing a pumpkin soup for dinner. I used our last self grown hokkaido for it. Unfortunately I had to take the hokkaido plant out of the soil because its leaves were  all infested by some kind of tiny little white fly that transmitted mildew to it. Also it had already spread to some surrounding plants and we didn't want that so I got rid of it. 

 

 Die Kürbiskerne haben wir entnommen und später auf Backpapier gelegt, damit sie trockenen können. 

We took out the seeds and later on put them onto parchment paper to dry. 

 

 Die Kinder haben sich was Süßes gewünscht und ich habe also Apfelkuchen gebacken. Mumpel hat die Streusel gemacht.

The kids wanted something sweet for desert and so I made apple pie. Mumpel did the crumbles to top it. 

 

Am Nachmittag habe ich einige Kräuter aus dem Garten gesammelt und zu einem lockeren Blumenkranz gebunden. Ich habe Kappuzinerkresse, Frauenmantel, Rosmarin, Salbei und Thymian dafür genommen. 

In the afternoon I took some herbs from the garden to do a flower wreath with them. I used nasturtiums, lady's mantle, rosemary, sage and thyme for it.

Heute gibt es mal ein Glas Wein. Diesen Rose haben wir aus Frankreich mitgebracht. Da wir dieses Jahr wegen des Coronavirus die Reise in die Provence abgesagt haben, ist der Wein aber eine schöne Erinnerung an unsere Zeiten dort. 

Today we'll have a glass of wine. This Rose wine we brought home from France last summer. Due to coronavirus we had to cancel our trip down to Provence this year but this wine makes a nice memory and we thought about our happy times down there.

Unsere gesammelten Werke vom Ausflug vor ein paar Tagen. Die roten Beeren sind Weißdornbeeren. An wild wachsenden Büschen gibt es jede Menge davon. Wir werden nochmal losgehen und mehr pflücken, denn aus ihnen kann man Marmelade herstellen. Die Früchte sind sehr Vitamin C-reich. 

These are all our collected treasures from a couple of days ago. The red berries are from a bush called hawthorn. We found so many bushes with even more berries and decided to go antoher time to collect more. Those fruits contain a lot of Vitamin C and we decided to make jam from them. 

 

 Für Kastanien waren wir offensichtlich zu früh dran, da haben wir in den letzten Jahren deutlich mehr gefunden!

Seemed to be too early in the year to collect buckeyes, during past years we found much more of them. 

 

 Unsere Sumpfeiche wirft jetzt immer mehr Blätter ab.

Nach dem Essen sitzen wir noch einige Zeit ums Feuer herum, bis es dunkel und zu kühl wird. Man kann wunderbar in die Flammen gucken und sich überlegen, was man im Sommer alles schönes gemacht hat und sich auf den Herbst vorbereiten. Ich werde mich im Herbst mit meinen Heilpflanzen auseinandersetzen und schauen, was ich wann und wie ernten muss, um es im nächsten Jahr für den Winter einzulagern und welche Pflanze wie wirkt. Ich habe gerade noch ein paar wenige Pflanzen bestellt, die mir wichtig sind und im Kräutergarten noch fehlen.

 After dinner we sat around the fireplace until it got dark and too cold. We just sat there and looked at the flames and thought and talked about what was nice this summer and what we want to do during fall. I will look into different herbs with healing functions - I have a lot of them in my garden and ordered a couple more that were still missing. I will find out when and how to harvest them so I can make tee from them next year. Also I want to find out and make a list of what to use for which sickness. 

Den Kranz, der mehr ein Oval geworden ist, weil ich ihn nur auf die Schnelle gebunden habe, haben wir an der Gardinenstange aufgehangen. 

We put the flower wreath up on the ceiling - because I put it together quickly it looks more oval-shaped but we don't care about that.
