Trip to Bristol, UK - Part 1

A few weeks ago the kids and I took a five-day trip to the UK. This was the idea of a friend of ours who travels Bristol every once in a while and who asked the three of us if we would like to join her on her next trip. We all thought this would give us a great opportunity to see England. We have never been there before. We went to Calais in France by car and got onto the ferry to Dover, then driving to Bristol - this time on the "wrong" side of the road.

Vor wenigen Wochen haben die Kinder und ich einen fünftägigen Ausflug nach England gemacht. Unsere Freundin kam auf die Idee. Sie ist alle paar Wochen in Bristol und hat uns gefragt ob wir nicht Lust hätten, sie bei Ihrer nächsten Reise dorthin zu begleiten. Wir dachten das wäre eine prima Gelegenheit, das Vereinte Königreich kennenzulernen. Wir drei sind vorher noch nie in England gewesen. Von Calais in Frankreich aus haben wir die Autofähre nach Dover genommen und von dort aus gings auf der "falschen" Straßenseite weiter nach Bristol.

This picture was taken out of the double-decker bus we went into town with. Especially Mumpel had so much fun sitting upstairs right in front of the bus where she was able to see everything. We bought day tickets and did quite some driving around Bristol in this type of bus - just for the fun of it.

Das Bild habe ich aus einem Doppeldecker-Bus gemacht. Besonders Mumpel war ganz begeistert davon ganz vorne oben zu sitzen und rausgucken zu können. Wir haben uns Tagestickets gekauft und über die Tage eine ganze Weile damit zugebracht, aus Spaß in diesen Bussen herumzufahren.

Joining the sculpting festival, watching artists work on stone. Many of the stones they use are lime sandstones from the sorrounding area of Bath.

Wir schauen uns das Skulpturen-Festival und seine Künstler an. Viele arbeiten mit Kalksandstein aus der Nähe von Bath.

Mumpel climbing a wall all by herself. Not only does she love jumping, bikeriding, rollerblading but obviously also climbing and in fact any sportive activity.

Mumpel klettert eben mal eine Mauer hoch. Dass sie gerne sportliche Aktivitäten wie hüpfen, radeln und rollerbladen mag wusste ich, neuerdings kommt wohl noch das Klettern hinzu.

The planetarium belongs to the science center of Bristol. We joined the kids`show even though it was in english and Rob and Mumpel hardly understood anything the friendly lady explained. They liked it anyhow especially when she turned off the lights completely and they could just lay in their seats and look at the night sky with stars above them .

Das Planetarium gehört zum Wissenschaftszentrum in Bristol. Wir haben uns eine Show angeschaut obwohl sie natürlich auf englisch war und Rob und Mumpel kaum etwas verstanden haben was die freundliche Dame erklärt hat. Sie mochten es trotzdem, besonders als die Lichter komplett ausgeschaltet wurden und sie einfach in ihren Sitzen liegen und den Sternenhimmel geniessen konnten.

Working on soapstone - Speckstein bearbeiten

Last week Rob and Mumpel asked me if we have soapstone to work with. I bought some back in January when I went to a store for handicraft supply, put it away to give it to them later on and by now had forgotten all about it.

Letzte Woche haben mich Rob und Mumpel gefragt ob wir Speckstein haben den sie bearbeiten können. Ich hatte im Januar welchen im Bastelgeschäft gekauft und in den Schrank gepackt um ihn den beiden später zu geben und bis jetzt schon wieder ganz vergessen.

These are the tools that the kids worked with: coping saw, collar, chisel, brace, brush and oil. Both kids have tools and a toolbox that they use when working on wood, stone or other material.

Laubsäge, Zwinge, Bohrer, Meißel, Pinsel und Öl gehören zum Bearbeiten dazu. Beide Kinder haben einen Werkzeugkasten mit verschiedenen Werkzeugen darin. Mit ihnen bearbeiten sie Holz, Stein oder andere Materialien.

Rob is holding the soapstone while Mumpel is dividing it with the coping saw. Looks easy but has been taking quite some time to divide several stones.

Rob hält den Speckstein fest während Mumpel ihn mit der Laubsäge durchsägt. Das sieht einfach aus, hat die beiden aber einige Zeit gekostet bis sie mehrere Steinstücke abgesägt hatten.

Mumpel wants to wear her stone as a necklace so she uses the hand brace for drilling. She fixed the stone with a collar.

Mumpel möchte ihren Stein als Halskette tragen und benutzt den Handbohrer um das Loch zu bohren. Fixiert hat sie ihn mit einer Zwinge.

These necklaces they made out of light and dark soap stone. After sawing, shaping and drilling they polished them using sandpaper and olive oil.

Diese Halsketten aus hellem und dunklem Speckstein haben die beiden gemacht. Nach dem Sägen, bearbeiten und bohren wurden alle Steine mit Schleifpapier geglättet und danach mit Olivenöl poliert.
