All kinds of herbs - Jede Menge Kräuter

Heute morgen war ich ganz früh schon im Bioladen. Dort gehe ich seit wenigen Wochen wieder öfter kaufen, weil wir alle mit den Demeter-Waren ein besseres Kaufgefühl haben, als mit den herkömmlichen, pestizidbelasteteren Waren. Das geht nicht immer, weil es teurer ist, aber ich freue mich jedesmal, wenn ich dort hinfahre. Heute habe ich unter anderem diese Tomatenpflanze für unser Beet mitgebracht.

Early this morning I drove to our local organic shop to get some veggies. I try bying organic stuff more often again as we all have a better feeling with eating vegetables that are not as much pesticide contaminated as the regular stuff is. It's more expensive so we can go there every so often but I like being in that store a lot. Today I got us a tomato plant for our flower bed - besides all kinds of other herbs. 

Sauerampfer, Petersilie, Schnittlauch und Basilikum habe ich für unsere Zinkwanne geholt. Mit dem Basilikum muss man aufpassen, der möchte nicht von oben gegossen werden und braucht ausreichend Platz, sonst geht er ganz schnell ein.

Sorrel, Parsley, Chives and Basil is what I got for our zinc pan outside. I will plant it in there as we do each year. I know I have to be careful with the basil. It has to be watered from the bottom instead of pouring water onto its leaves and it needs enough space to grow otherwise it dies fastly. 

Vor dem Basilikum ist im Moment noch jede Menge Platz, doch ich hoffe, dass bald die Kapuzinerkresse sich ihren Weg nach oben bahnt, dann ist die Wanne schön bunt mit Kräutern, die man essen kann. 

There is still plenty of space in front of the basil but I hope that soon nasturtium seeds that I put in there will make their way on top. I think it will look nice with all colorful herbs in the pan once everything has grown. 

Andere Kräuter aus dem Samentütchen habe ich zu mehreren in verschiedene Töpfe gesät zum Anwachsen. Unter anderem sind dort Bohnenkraut, Dill, Liebstöckel, Majoran, Ringelblume und Zuckererbse, Borretsch und Oregano drin. Ich bin mal gespannt, ob das was wird, sonst muss ich sie doch in kleinen Töpfen auf der Fensterbank vorziehen. In den letzten Jahren hat das immer geklappt aber dieses Jahr haben wir ganz viele Amseln im Garten, die die Erde benutzen, um damit Nester zu bauen und ständig mit ihrem Schnabel darin herumwühlen. 

I put in all kinds of different seeds that we had left into these pots. There is savory, dill, lovage, marjoram, marigold, sweet pea, borage and oregano in them. I can't wait to see if this actually works or not. If it doesn't I have to get small pots and grow the seeds in my kitchen before planting them into the flower bed. Although I've always done it this way and it always worked I'm a bit concerned now because we have many blackbirds in our garden this year and they use all the soil for building their nests obviously and pick in the soil with their beaks. 

Mumpel hat eine Liste gemacht, damit wir wissen, welche Kräuter wir später auf den Boden im Selbstversorgergarten pflanzen können weil sie nächstes Jahr wiederkommen und welche ins Beet müssen und im nächsten Jahr neu gepflanzt werden müssen. 

Mumpel has made us a list with herbs and veggies that grow for just one year and the ones that will return for years. That way we know which herbs can be planted onto the ground into our veggie garden and which ones have to go into a flower bed and have to be bought and planted again next year. 

 

Cookie lag, während wir gepflanzt und gewässert haben, in der Sonne und hat geschlafen. Sie ist ein richtiger Sonnenanbeter. Jeder noch so kleine Strah, der durchs Fenster scheint, wird genutzt. 

While we were in the garden planting and watering everything Cookie found herself a place in the sun on the wooden floor and went to sleep there. She just loves the sun and whenever she finds sunshine coming into the living room she uses this spot as a napping area.

 Heute lesen und schreiben wir etwas über die häuslichen Arbeiten der Frauen bei den Germanen. Wir nehmen dazu unser "Was - ist - Was" Buch zur Hand. 

Today we do some reading about what women had to do in and around the house during the time of the teutons. 

 

Zum ersten Mal gab es heute Erdbeeren im Bioladen. Die mache ich zum Mittagessen. 

First time they had strawberries in the organic shop. I will make them for lunch today.

Weekend - Wochenende

Am Samstag haben Thomas, ich und Mumpel einen Ausflug in den Bioladen gemacht. Dort ist auch Kürbiszeit und es gibt sie in allen möglichen Farben und Formen zu kaufen. Habe ich Euch schon erzählt, dass der Herbst meine liebste Jahreszeit ist? Man kann etwas ernten, viel schmücken und dekorieren und basteln und es wird gemütlich. Wenn dann noch ab und zu die Sonne scheint und die Blätter sich so hübsch verfärben dann ist mein Herbstglück perfekt. 

On saturday Thomas, Mumpel and I went to our local organic shop. This time of year they have loads of pumpkins in all different colors and forms. Have I told you yet that autumn is my favorite time of year? You can harvest in autumn as well as decorate the house and handicraft things with stuff that nature supplies - our home and oursevlves are getting cosy. If we have a couple of sunny days then during fall to see the color of the leaves changing I'm in autumn heaven. 

 

Jede Menge kleine Kürbisse, runzlige und glatte. Ihr seht, die Sonne scheint. Der Bioladen hat auch ein kleines Cafe, indem wir nach dem Einkauf noch zusammengesessen und Kaffee getrunken haben. Mumpel hatte eine Limo und eine leckere Nussecke. Rob konnte leider nicht mitkommen. Nachdem Mumpel nun eine ganze Woche lang krank war und gerade erst wieder auf die Füße kommt, hat er sich nun angesteckt und hütet das Bett.

Mumpel had lemonade and a little cake with walnuts. Unfortunately Rob couldn't come with us. After Mumpel had been sick all week long he obviously caught her flew and is in bed today.

Wir haben uns dazu entschieden, wieder etwas bewusster essen zu wollen und dazu gehören für uns Bioprodukte. Eine ganze Weile haben wir nicht mehr wirklich  darauf geachtet, was wir kaufen, ob gespritzt oder nicht doch nun stellen wir uns wieder um. Biologisch angebaute Lebensmittel zu kaufen und zu verwerten war immer ein großer Teil unseres Familienlebens. Nicht nur haben die Bioläden ein ganz besonderes Flair sondern wir haben auch alle ein besseres Gefühl, sinnvoll angebaute Lebensmittel zu kaufen und diese Läden zu unterstützen. 

We decided to eat more consciously again and for us that means bying organic food as often as possible. For quite a while we weren't careful about what we eat anymore, we didn't look if vegetables were sprayed with pesticides or not but we want to change that now. Buying and cooking organic food had for years been a big part of our family life and we want to go back to that now. Organic stores in our opinion have a special nice atmosphere to them and we like to support these shops. 

 

Im Garten geht es zügig weiter mit den Erdarbeiten. Hier wurde ein Lichtschacht für das Kellerfenster aus Natursteinen gemacht. Ich bin mir sicher, wenn die groben Arbeiten vorbei sind sieht man nicht mehr so schnelle Fortschritte. Wir sind aber alle begeistert, einen neuen Garten zu bekommen und freuen uns schon drauf, wenn es an das Bepflanzen geht. Da fällt mir ein dass ich unbedingt noch Tulpenzwiebeln kaufen will denn diese muss ich direkt in die Erde drücken sobald der Garten fertig ist damit sie nächstes Jahr schön blühen. 

Work in our garden is processing. We have a light well in front of the basement window now and it is made from natural stones and looks really nice. I'm sure when the rough work in the garden is done we won't see as much fast progress anymore but we are all so happy to get a new garden soon and we can't wait to planting stuff into it. Oh, that reminds me - I want to buy tulip bulbs to put them into the soil as soon as the garden is done so they will bloom in spring next year. 

Wir waren am Samstag auch noch im Fliesenhandel um uns Feinsteinzeug für die Terrasse anzuschauen. So langsam müssen wir entscheiden, wo wir die Terrassen haben wollen, wie groß sie sein sollen und mit was sie belegt sein sollen. Wir haben uns gegen Holz entschieden und nehmen Fliesen für Draußen. Die hellen haben uns leider gar nicht gefallen, ich denke mit einer Schieferoptik kommen wir gut klar sonst sieht die Fläche nachher zu glatt aus. Anthrazit gefällt uns eh gut. 

We also went to a tiling shop to look at different tiles for our porches in the garden. Slowly but surely we have to decide where exactely the porch is going to be, how big it should get and what tiles we want. We decided against a wooden porch. I think we'll be happy with slate tiles because they vary in their look and do not look exactely the same on each tile. The lighter tiles weren't for us, they just didn't look nice so we decided on anthracite. 

 

In dem Fliesenhandel wurden auch Bäder ausgestellt. Das hier habe ich auch gefunden, das ist doch die optimale Lösung für ein Waschbecken fürs Bad, oder?  

The shop also presents baths with bathroom furniture like sinks and tiles. I found this practical version of a sink, looks like the perfect bath solution, doesn't it? 

 

Home is the place you don't have to suck in your belly

Mumpel war ganz traurig, dass sie diese Woche ihre Vierbeiner nicht besuchen konnte wegen dem Infekt, den sie hatte. Ihre Freundin war aber am Stall und hat sie mit Bildern versorgt. 

Mumpel was sad because she couldn't see her horses all week due to her cold. Her friend was at the stable though and took pictures for her and sent them to her. 

 

Statt die Pferde zu besuchen hat sie eine ruhige Woche gehabt und viel gelesen. Im Moment sind Pferdebücher die Bücher, die sie am liebsten liest. Diese beiden sind neu. Eins spielt in Australien, ein anderes auf einem alten Landsitz in England. Das Buch, das in England spielt hat ihr besser gefallen. 

Instead of visiting the horses Mumpel had a more quiet week then usually and did a lot of reading. At the time she loves books about horses and friendship between girls and horses. I got her these two books, one story takes place in australia, the other one on a manor in England. She liked the one taking place in England better. 

 

Fast hätte ich die Maronen vergessen. Die gab es abends am Sonntag. Wir haben sie einfach in den Ofen geschoben und nach dem Rösten geöffnet und gegessen. Sehr lecker!

I almost forgot the chestnuts we made on sunday. We just put them into the oven and roasted them before eating them. They were so yummy.
