Heute morgen habe ich mal versucht, unsere Gartenkräuter zu entsaften - Kresse, Thymian und Salbei. Ich war mir nicht sicher, ob der Entsafter das wohl schafft, weil die Zweige von Thymian und Salbei schon recht verholzt waren aber es hat geklappt!

 

This morning I tried to juice some herbs from our garden - cress, thyme and sage. I wasn't sure if the juicer would do it because the stems of thyme and sage already turned a bit woody but it worked out well!

Man hat die wenigen Kräuter neben dem ganzen Sellerie auch deutlich rausgeschmeckt, also war es von der Menge her nicht zu wenig. 

At first I thought I took not enough herbs besides all the celery but we could all taste the herbs so it was just enough.

 

 

 

Im Garten habe ich dann die letzten Rote Bete geerntet.

I took the last of our beetroots out of the raised flower bed. 

 

 

 

 

Jetzt gibt es noch Lauch und es kommt neuer Feldsalat.

Thomas hat mir nach der Arbeit geholfen, die letzten Pflanzen in die Erde zu setzen. Wir haben immernoch jede Menge Himbeeren im Garten und sie schmecken sogar noch. 

 

When home from work Thomas helped me to plant the rest of the flowers I ordered weeks ago. We still have lots of raspberries and they are still tasty. 

 

 

 

Abends habe ich noch einen Spaziergang gemacht. Es hatte keiner Lust, mitzugehen, also war ich allein unterwegs. Das Licht war toll, eine Mischung aus Sonne und sich immer mehr verdunkelndem Himmel. 

In the evening I went for a walk - by myself because no one wanted to come along. I love this light with the sun and the really dark sky at the same time.

Auf dem Rückweg bin ich bei meiner Freundin vorbeigegangen. Sie wollte mir ein paar Äpfel mitgeben, weil sie so viele Äpfel an ihrem Baum hat, dass sie sie gar nicht alle nutzen kann. Zuerst haben wir aber noch zusammen draußen gesessen und gequatscht. Plötzlich kann die Katze der Nachbarin in den Garten und ist den ganzen Abend nicht mehr von meiner Seite gewichen. 

On the way back home I went by my friend's house. She wanted to give me some of her apples from her tree as she has so many of them that she doesn't know what to do with hundreds of apples. First, though, we sat outside together and chatted a bit. Suddenly her neighbor's cat came into her garden and she never left me until I went home. 

 

 

 

Die Äpfel gehen bei uns sicherlich schnell weg. Meine Freundin hat einen sogenannten Familienbaum, an dem mehrere Sorten von Äpfeln wachsen. 

I suppose at our house these apples won't last too long. My friend has an apple tree called family tree with different sorts of apples growing on it.

Medicinal herbs - Heilkräuter

Es ist ein Paket angekommen! Als wir es aufgemacht haben, hat man als erstes diese Holzwolle gesehen. War gar nicht so leicht, den Inhalt vorsichtig von der Holzwolle zu trennen. 

A new package arrived! When we  opened it we found this wood wool on top. It was not all easy to get rid of it in a careful way to get to the content of the package. 

 

Ich habe alle möglichen Heilkräuter in einem Bioland-Pflanzenversand bestellt und freue mich sehr, dass sie so schnell angekommen sind. Es hat nur wenige Tage gedauert. Die Kräuter sollen alle in den Vorgarten, wo schon Salbei, Thymian, Oregano, Zitronenmelisse, Rosmarin und die Beerensträucher stehen. 

I ordered all kinds of different herbs in an organic plants shop and I am quite happy that they arrived after only a couple of days. These medicinal herbs are going into our front garden where I already have sage, thyme, oregano, lemon balm, rosemary and all the different berries.

Beinwell, Wilde Karde und Beifuß habe ich nicht fotografiert weil deren Blätter schon ganz gelb sind. Jetzt muss ich nur noch die Zeit finden, alles einzupflanzen. Ich hoffe, dass die Kräuter dann über den Herbst und Winter gut anwachsen und alle nächstes Jahr blühen. 

I haven't taken a picture of comfrey, wild teasel and mugwort as their leaves have already turned into yellow. Now I just have to find the time to plant everything. I hope all herbs will accumulate well during fall and winter and will all blossom next year.

Autumn equinox - Herbst Tag- und Nachtgleiche

Heute habe ich ein paar Bilder von unserer kleinen Familienfeier zur Herbst Tag-und Nachtgleiche für Euch. Feiert Ihr deses Datum auch? Wir haben zusammen draußen gesessen und gegessen und ein Feuer gemacht. Das ging an dem Tag noch, schon gestern wurde es dann deutlich kühler. 

Today I have a couple of pictures of our little family celebration for autumn equinox for you. Do you celebrate this date? We sat outside that night and had dinner and lit a fire. Two days ago that was possible but now it has cooled down quite a bit. 

 

Mittags habe ich schon angefangen, die Kürbissuppe vorzubereiten. Das war unser letzter eigener Hokkaido. Leider war die Pflanze von so vielen weißen Fliegen befallen, die den Mehltau übertragen, dass ich sie raus gemacht habe. Das ist sehr schade, denn es kamen noch drei Kürbisse, doch der Mehltau war leider auch schon auf andere umliegende Pflanzen übergegangen.

Around noon I started preparing a pumpkin soup for dinner. I used our last self grown hokkaido for it. Unfortunately I had to take the hokkaido plant out of the soil because its leaves were  all infested by some kind of tiny little white fly that transmitted mildew to it. Also it had already spread to some surrounding plants and we didn't want that so I got rid of it. 

 

 Die Kürbiskerne haben wir entnommen und später auf Backpapier gelegt, damit sie trockenen können. 

We took out the seeds and later on put them onto parchment paper to dry. 

 

 Die Kinder haben sich was Süßes gewünscht und ich habe also Apfelkuchen gebacken. Mumpel hat die Streusel gemacht.

The kids wanted something sweet for desert and so I made apple pie. Mumpel did the crumbles to top it. 

 

Am Nachmittag habe ich einige Kräuter aus dem Garten gesammelt und zu einem lockeren Blumenkranz gebunden. Ich habe Kappuzinerkresse, Frauenmantel, Rosmarin, Salbei und Thymian dafür genommen. 

In the afternoon I took some herbs from the garden to do a flower wreath with them. I used nasturtiums, lady's mantle, rosemary, sage and thyme for it.

Heute gibt es mal ein Glas Wein. Diesen Rose haben wir aus Frankreich mitgebracht. Da wir dieses Jahr wegen des Coronavirus die Reise in die Provence abgesagt haben, ist der Wein aber eine schöne Erinnerung an unsere Zeiten dort. 

Today we'll have a glass of wine. This Rose wine we brought home from France last summer. Due to coronavirus we had to cancel our trip down to Provence this year but this wine makes a nice memory and we thought about our happy times down there.

Unsere gesammelten Werke vom Ausflug vor ein paar Tagen. Die roten Beeren sind Weißdornbeeren. An wild wachsenden Büschen gibt es jede Menge davon. Wir werden nochmal losgehen und mehr pflücken, denn aus ihnen kann man Marmelade herstellen. Die Früchte sind sehr Vitamin C-reich. 

These are all our collected treasures from a couple of days ago. The red berries are from a bush called hawthorn. We found so many bushes with even more berries and decided to go antoher time to collect more. Those fruits contain a lot of Vitamin C and we decided to make jam from them. 

 

 Für Kastanien waren wir offensichtlich zu früh dran, da haben wir in den letzten Jahren deutlich mehr gefunden!

Seemed to be too early in the year to collect buckeyes, during past years we found much more of them. 

 

 Unsere Sumpfeiche wirft jetzt immer mehr Blätter ab.

Nach dem Essen sitzen wir noch einige Zeit ums Feuer herum, bis es dunkel und zu kühl wird. Man kann wunderbar in die Flammen gucken und sich überlegen, was man im Sommer alles schönes gemacht hat und sich auf den Herbst vorbereiten. Ich werde mich im Herbst mit meinen Heilpflanzen auseinandersetzen und schauen, was ich wann und wie ernten muss, um es im nächsten Jahr für den Winter einzulagern und welche Pflanze wie wirkt. Ich habe gerade noch ein paar wenige Pflanzen bestellt, die mir wichtig sind und im Kräutergarten noch fehlen.

 After dinner we sat around the fireplace until it got dark and too cold. We just sat there and looked at the flames and thought and talked about what was nice this summer and what we want to do during fall. I will look into different herbs with healing functions - I have a lot of them in my garden and ordered a couple more that were still missing. I will find out when and how to harvest them so I can make tee from them next year. Also I want to find out and make a list of what to use for which sickness. 

Den Kranz, der mehr ein Oval geworden ist, weil ich ihn nur auf die Schnelle gebunden habe, haben wir an der Gardinenstange aufgehangen. 

We put the flower wreath up on the ceiling - because I put it together quickly it looks more oval-shaped but we don't care about that.

Herbs and bees and grapes - Kräuter und Bienen und Trauben

Heute nehme ich Euch mal wieder mit in den Garten. Während ich das hier schreibe, geht draußen die Sonne gerade auf. Es wird langsam Herbst, aber ich freu mich, dass das Wetter noch so gut ist und wir versuchen, möglichst viel im Garten bzw. draußen zu sein. Am Wochenende war ich beide Tage ganz früh wach und bin erstmal barfuss raus. Die Platten waren eiskalt aber das Gras ist so schön dicht geworden, dass es sich herrlich anfühlt unter den Füßen. Außerdem hatten meine eiskalten Füße hoffentlich noch die kneippsche Nebenwirkung der Kreislaufstärkung. Das könnte man mal wieder öfter machen.

Today I'm taking you on another trip around the garden. While writing this sun is just rising. Slowly autumn is coming but it is still sunny outside and pretty warm so we try to spend as much time as possible out in the sun. Both saturday and sunday I was awake really early. I went out barefoot which was great although really cold. Our lawn has grown so nicely it felt good under my feet. Since walking barefoot outside and warming ones cold feet afterwards is supposed to be really healthy for blood circulation I think I should do this more often again. 

 

Sieht aus wie eine Fliege, ist aber eine Wildbiene. Im Oregano ist richtig was los. Es waren unzählige Honigbienen, Wildbienen und Hummeln darin unterwegs. Meine Versuche, sie zu fotografieren, waren leider in den meisten Fällen nicht gerade von Erfolg gekrönt, da Bienen eher hektisch und mit viel Gebrumm sehr schnell von einer Blüte zur nächsten gehetzt sind. Trotzdem schön mit anzusehen. 

Looks like a fly but it is a wild bee. There is at the time a lot going on in our oregano. Numerous honey bees, wild bees and bumble bees are collecting pollen there. I have tried to take good photos and I took quite a lot but most of them didn't turn out very good because all of these bees flew rather hectic from one flower to the next, humming pretty loudly. It was so nice to watch them though. 

 

Eine Honigbiene ist das nicht, ich glaube, das könnte eine rote Mauerbiene sein aber ich kenne mich zu wenig aus, um das mit Sicherheit sagen zu können. Als wir die Kräuter gepflanzt haben, dachten wir dabei mehr daran, sie für die Küche nutzen zu können. Dass wir den Bienen so einen großen Gefallen damit tun, war uns nicht bewusst. Wir haben seit dem Frühjahr jede Menge Bienen in Thymian, Salbei, Oregano, Zitronenmelisse und Co gesehen und das Schöne ist, dass sie sich mit der Blütezeit abwechseln. Der Oregano zum Beispiel blüht deutlich später als unsere anderen Kräuter und anscheinend hat er vor, noch länger zu blühen. So wechseln sich die Kräuter ab und die Bienen haben länger was zu fressen.

This is not a honey bee it could be a red Mason bee but I am not an expert, I don't know for sure. When we planted the herbs we thought more about using them for cooking. We didn't think we'd do such a great favor to all the bees that come to visit them since spring now. We noticed that they are flowering at different times. Oregano for example is flowering much later than sage or thyme and that means that all the bees have food for a longer period of time. 

 

Hier sieht man allerdings auch, dass sich die Kräuter ganz schön aussäen können. In der Mitte des Bildes steht Thymian. Drumherum die ganzen kleinen Stängel, die hochschauen, sind neue Thymianpflanzen, die sich ausgesät haben. Anfangs wussten wir nicht, was es ist, wir sahen nur überall im Garten auf einmal winzig kleine Ästchen aus dem Boden ragen. Rob hat sie zwischen den Fingern zerrieben und die Geruchsprobe gemacht und die war mehr als eindeutig! Überall Thymian! Mich stört er nicht, ich bin froh, wenn er das Unkraut fernhält. An einigen wenigen Stellen habe ich ihn weggenommen aber ansonsten kann er wachsen und im nächsten Frühjahr noch mehr schöne fliederfarbene Blüten bekommen. An Thymian für die Küche wird es so schnell wohl nicht mangeln. 

On this picture you can see that herbs can seed themselves throughout a whole garden. In the middle of the photo is thyme and all around it are new little thyme plants. At first we didn't know what this is and weather it is weed or not. Rob grinded the leaves in his fingers and smelled what it could be and it was more than obvious that this could be nothing else but thyme. It doesn't bother me at all, it keeps weeds away and so we leave it where it is so it can grow and get more blossoms for bees next spring. I guess I will have enough thyme to use in the kitchen.

Kommen wir nun zu etwas anderem: der Apfelbaum hat nicht nur eine sondern sechs neue Blüten. Unglaublich. Ich gehe nicht davon aus, dass er es noch schafft, so spät im Jahr neue Äpfel zu zaubern, aber man weiß ja nie!

Let's talk about something differnt: the apple tree has not one but six new flowers. Unbelievable. I don't really think it can make more apples out of them because it is already september but on the other hand you never know.

Schöne Herbstfarbe an den eigentlich weißen Rispenhortensien. Man sieht es gar nicht, aber im Hintergrund am Wein wachsen tatsächlich Trauben. Die sind auch jetzt nicht mehr sauer sondern ganz süß, also auch erntereif. Es sind ganz kleine Trauben, dafür sehr viele. 

Nice autumn color of the actual white hydrangea. You can hardly see it but the vine in the back does have grapes and they are not sour anymore but all sweet, so we can harvest these as well. They are a kind of very small grapes but many of them. 

 

 Die Feuerschale hat sich jetzt schon mehr als bezahlt gemacht, wir haben am Wochenende wieder ein Feuerchen gemacht.

This fireplace has really paid off already, we used it again at the weekend.
