Brigid

Am letzten Wochenende hatten wir wieder Schnee, und zwar recht viel davon. Hier auf dem Bild sieht man unseren Zierapfel, der in dem hellen Licht des Schnees noch schöner aussieht. Wir haben unsere Zeit dann unter anderem dazu genutzt, in die Eifel zu fahren und ein bisschen spazieren zu gehen. 

 

We had quite a bit of snow over the last weekend. On the photo you see our crab apple tree which looks even nicer with the bright light of the snow around it. We took a trip to the Eifel to go for a walk.  

 

 

 

Es war zwar sehr grau draußen, aber wir haben uns trotzdem über richtigen Winter gefreut.

It was drowsy outside but we were still happy to have a bit of real winter.

Wieder daheim haben wir dann einen Hefeteig vorbereitet für unsere Pizza. 

Once back home we prepared a yeast dough for our pizza. 

 

 

 

 

Eigentlich muss ich sagen, dass Rob den Teig so gut wie allein gemacht hat. 

Actually Rob made this dough by himself. 

 

 

 

 

Es sind unterschiedlich belegte, leckere Pizzen geworden. 

We put on different veggies and all the pizza turned out yum.

 

 

 

Wir haben auch ein Feuer im Garten gemacht, um die Brigit, und damit das Licht ein wenig zu feiern. Es wird wieder heller, wenn ich morgens aufstehe, dauert es nicht mehr lange, bis die Sonne um die Ecke schaut und die Gartenvögel machen sich wieder deutlich mehr im Garten bemerkbar. Gestern habe ich vier Amseln im Vorgarten erwischt, wie sie laut und ausgiebig im Laub herumgewühlt haben. Natürlich sind die Vögel den ganzen Winter über da, doch seit wenigen Tagen sehen wir sie wieder vermehrt. Ich habe auch Blaumeisen, Kohlmeisen und Buchfinken gesehen - und natürlich jede Menge Spatzen. Sobald ich morgens jedoch die Gartentüre aufmache und auch nur einen Fuß auf die Terrasse setze, schimpfen sie und warnen sich gegenseitig. Das passt ihnen gar nicht, ein Eindringling in IHREM Garten. :-)

We also made a little fire in the garden to celebrate brigit and the upcoming light of spring she brings. Days are getting longer, its not that dark anymore when I get up in the mornings and the birds in the garden are back. Well, of course I know they had been here all winter but they seem to become more active with more light. The black birds keep turning all the leaves in the front yard looking for something to eat and they make quite some noise. We also saw great tits, blue tits, sparrows and chaffinches. As soon as I open the door that leads to the garden they start ranting and warning one another. No, this is not what they like - an intruder in THEIR garden. :-)

 

 

 

Und noch eins haben wir am Wochenende gemacht: Unser Spatzenhaus gereinigt, denn die Vögel suchen schon wieder Baugelegenheiten. Das Spatzenhaus war eigentlich für drei Spatzenfamilien gedacht, doch es haben im Frühjahr Kohlmeisen darin gebrütet. Wir haben in dem Kasten zwei Nester gefunden, wunderbar mit Moos ausgekleidet, exakt in der Form des Kastens. Die Nester waren ziemlich dick, die Kohlmeisenmutter hat sich ganz schon ins Zeug gelegt und ganz schön gearbeitet, um so ein tolles Nest herzustellen, finden wir. Jetzt ist es bereit für einen Neueinzug. 

 

And here is another thing we did on the weekend: we cleaned the nesting facility that was actually meant for sparrows but was used by great tits during the last spring. We found two nests in the box, quite thick so the mother must have had quite a lot of work forming such a nice and cosy nest for her little ones. It looks exactely the shape of the box. Well, its ready for whoever wants to move in there now.

Ich habe mir fest vorgenommen, wieder regelmäßig richtiges Frühstück für alle zu machen. In der letzten Zeit haben wir alle ständig zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten gefrühstückt, weil irgendwer krank und noch im Bett war oder früher zur Arbeit musste oder am Wochenende die Pferde auch versorgt werden mussten und man sich beeilen wollte oder, oder, oder. Jetzt sitzen wir morgens wieder zusammen beim Frühstück. Man muss sich ein bisschen disziplinieren um wieder Struktur reinzubekommen, aber genau die finde ich wichtig für uns. Wie wichtig sind Euch gemeinsame Mahlzeiten?

I plan to have breakfast with the complete family again in the future. During the last weeks everyone of us just had their breakfast whenever it suited him or her and we never sat at the table as a family together. Either one of us was ill and in bed or had to go to work or hurried to the stable and took their breakfast with them or various other things were going on that kept us from eating together. I found we need this sort of structure though and I prepare breakfast each morning again for all and we fit it in with more consequence now. How important is having meals with the family for you?

Wir haben die Stifte neu sortiert, zwischendurch muss das einfach mal sein. Über die letzten Monate ist alles in einer großen Box gelandet, in der man nichts mehr gefunden hat. 

We sorted out our pens and pencils and our drawing pens. Over the last months we had all our pens in a big box where nobody could find what they needed anymore in. 

Ich bin absolut glücklich mit meinem neuen Garten. Endlich macht es wieder Spaß, rauszugehen. An den Hortensien kommen die ersten Blätter, es ist einfach schön, etwas wachsen zu sehen. Geht es Euch auch so? Trotzdem die Grundplanung abgeschlossen ist und auch die Grundbepflanzung, sind Thomas und ich schon am überlegen, was noch fehlt und welches Blümchen noch wo hin soll. Was auf jeden Fall noch fehlt sind Kräuter. 

I'm so very happy with my new garden. Finally it is fun to go into the garden again. All the hydrangea is getting new little leaves, it is so nice to watch the plants grow. Do you guys feel the same? Although we have a basic planting in the flower beds, Thomas and I are still already thinking about which flowers are still missing and where we could possibly put them. One thing that is important to us all are herbs, we have to get herbs.

 Ich finde, die Blütenstände der Hortensien können sich auch nach dem Blühen noch sehen lassen. 

I think the inflorescences of the hydrangea is beautiful after blossoming as well. 

Woran erkennt man, dass wir Winter haben? Daran, dass wir viel öfter in der Werkstatt sind, um zu bauen, als im Sommer. Thomas schneidet uns Kirschbaumholz, aus dem wir Einsätze für unsere Besteckschubladen machen wollen. Ich habe auch schon an der Kreissäge geschnitten, aber ich muss zugeben, dass mir diese Maschine unheimlich bleibt. Natürlich hat mich Thomas genau instruiert, aber ich hab irgendwie trotzdem immer leichte Angst, mir die Finger abzuschneiden. 

How do we know it's wintertime? We spend much more time in the workshop to build something than in the summer. Thomas is cutting cherry wood for us and we want to cutlery inserts for our kitchen drawers. I have been using the circular saw as well but I have to admit I find this machine somewhat scary. Of course Thomas gave me detailed instructions of how to handle the machine but I can't help myself - there is always a bit of fear left I'll cut my fingers off.

 Ach ja, dann haben wir noch den einzigen Sonnenstrahl des Wochenendes genutzt und die Vogelhäuschen aufgehangen. Das hier ist das Spatzen-Reihenhaus. 

Oh, before I forget: we used the only few minutes of sun on the weekend to put up our bird boxes. This one is the house for the sparrows. 

 Hier zieht hoffentlich eine Meisenfamilie ein. 

Hopefully a chickadee family will move in here. 

Die Futterstation hängt auch wieder. Mit Efeu bewachsen war sie schöner, doch wir haben, in Absprache mit den Nachbarn, den Efeu abgemacht, weil er so gewuchert hat. Am liebsten würde ich wieder neuen dransetzten, weil mir der ganze Zaun grün viel besser gefallen hat. Aber es ist schon eine relative Plage, den Efeu in Schach zu halten. Fehlt nur noch das Insektenhotel. Das bekommt in den nächsten Tagen einen Gartenplatz.

The feeding house is up again as well. It looked a lot nicer when it was overgrown with ivy but we took all the ivy down after talking to our neighbors as it is their fence as well. I would love to put new ivy up on that fence because I liked it with ivy much more but on the other hand it is actually a pain in the behind to control the growth it. The only thing missing now is the insect hotel. It will get its place in the garden during the next days.

Sunday at the workshop - Sonntag in der Werkstatt

Den Sonntag haben wir zusammen in der Werkstatt verbracht und Vogelfutterstation und Insektenhotel wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen. Dafür habe ich das grüne Häuschen abgeschliffen, damit wir es neu streichen konnten. 

We all spent our sunday in the workshop to restore our bird feeding house and the insect hotel. I sanded the house so we could paint it over. 

So sieht es jetzt aus. Vorher war es in tannengrün gestrichen, doch davon war keine Farbe mehr da, also ist es jetzt mossgrün. 

This is what it looks like now. We had painted it in a color called pine green before but we didn't have any of that color left so now it is painted in moss green.

The green bird feeding house had been hanging at our wooden fence for ten years and was overgrown with ivy.

Das ist unser Insektenhotel, das Rob mit Thomas zusammen vor einigen Jahren gebaut hat. In der Mitte haben sie einen Meisenkasten eingesetzt und auf dem Schild am Meisenkasten stand immer: "Übernachtung mit Frühstück". Das müssen wir noch mit Edding wieder drauf schreiben. 

This is our insect hotel. Rob and Thomas built it together a couple of years ago. They put a tit box in the middle of it and on the wooden sign underneath the box it used to say: "Overnight stay with breakfast". I think we'll write that onto the sign again. 

 Mumpels Meisenkasten haben wir auch geschliffen und im Farbton Eiche neu gestrichen. 

We also sanded Mumpel's tit box and painted it with a color called oak. 

 Cookie war auch dabei und hat es sich vor dem Kamin bequem gemacht. Was für ein Glück, dass wir den Kamin in der Werkstatt haben, sonst wäre es wirklich kalt dort im Winter.

Cookie was with us and stayed in front of the fireplace. Lucky us to have this fireplace in the workshop, else it would be so very cold in there during winter. 

Thomas hat das Spatzenhaus fertig gebaut. Es hat drei Eingänge, also auch drei Türen. Alles ist so gebaut, dass man es leicht öffnen und reinigen kann. Spatzen wollen zu mehreren zusammen wohnen. Wir haben immer einige im Garten gehabt. Ich hoffe, nach dem ganzen Gartenumbau kommen bald wieder die Spatzen zurück. 

Thomas completed the sparrow bird house. It has three doors so we can open them easily and clean the box. Sparrows want to live in families and this box is for three families. We have always had sparrows in our garden but after redoing the whole garden they have gone. I hope they will find the box and come back soon.

Zur Belohnung für die Sonntagsarbeit haben wir noch ein leckeres Tiramisu beim Italiener um die Ecke gegessen.

Winter garden and bird house - Wintergarten und Vogelhaus

Unser Morgen fängt derzeit immer mit einem frisch gepressten Orangensaft an. Wir haben eine große Kiste voll Orangen von einem Kunden bekommen. Das ist zu einer ganz netten Tradition geworden. Jedes Jahr verschenkt dieser Kunde große Apfelsinenkisten und jedes Jahr warten die Kinder schon darauf. Dieses Jahr ist er spät dran gewesen - oder früh, wie man es nimmt. 

Every morning starts with a fresh orange juice at our house at the time. We received a big box of oranges from one of Thomas` clients. This has become a nice tradition actually. Each year this client gives us a big box of oranges for the work Thomas has done and each year the kids are already waiting for the box. Usually he gives it to us before christmas but now we got it last week.

Der Winter hat uns schließlich doch noch eingeholt. Zwischendurch dachten wir es wird schon Frühling aber jetzt ist es richtig kalt, an die null Grad. Mein Sommerflieder ist mit einer dünnen Eisschicht bedeckt. 

Winter finally got us. For a while it looked like we'd skip winter and move right on to spring but now it is so cold outside. My buddleia has a thin icecap on its leaves.

Die Vogelfutterstation friert so langsam auch zu. Die Piepmätze sind schon wieder zurück im Garten aber ich habe mir sagen lassen, dass es doch recht lange dauert, bis sie diese Futterstellen annehmen. Bislang habe ich noch keinen Vogel an der Station gesehen. Haben sie die Stelle erstmal als Futterstelle gespeichert, sind sie Gewohnheitstiere, die immer wieder dorthin zurückkehren. Na, ich bin gespannt ob das noch was wird. Zumindestens höre ich sie immer morgens, sie sind also da.

The birds are back in the garden, I can hear them in the early mornings but someone told me that it takes quite some time before they accept a feeding station. Once they do accept it though they will always come back there. Well, I guess I'll see how long it will take them. 

In den nächsten Tagen werden wir ganz schön etwas zu tun haben. Gestern wurden drei Tonnen Lavaschotter geliefert, die wir um die Beete kippen müssen, damit nicht sofort das Unkraut durchbricht. Wir haben das in den Weihnachtsferien schon einmal gemacht und es war ganz schön anstrengend, alles in die Schubkarre zu schaufeln und dann im Beet zu verteilen. Ich hatte ziemlichen Muskelkater im Anschluss, trotzdem hat es Spaß gemacht. 

Here is what we will have to do during the next days: we will have to bring this lava gravel into our flower beds to prevent them from being overwhelmed with weed in spring. Yesterday we got three tons of this lava and it is in our driveway now and of course can't stay there. We did it before, during our christmas vacation and I can say it's a pretty exhausting job to shovel three tons of it into the garden. I had pretty sore muscles a day later but on the other hand it was a fun activity.

Ich habe diese Zeitschrift zu Hause liegen, eine meiner Lieblingszeitschriften. Darin sind in diesem Monat Anleitungen zum Bau von Vogelhäusern zu finden. Wir haben schon damit angefangen, unten sieht man unser erstes Vogelhaus. 

This is one of my favorite magazines and this time they have instructions for building bird nesting facilities in it. We have already started to build them, on a picture below you can see our bird house.

Meisenkästen haben wir schonmal gebaut als die Kinder noch viel kleiner waren. Diesmal möchte ich gerne auch ein Spatzenhaus haben und ein Haus für Rotschwänze. Für alle Vogelarten muss man die Öffnungen unterschiedlich groß machen und Spatzen sind so gesellig, dass sie am liebsten in Reihenhäusern zu mehreren wohnen. 

We did tit boxes before when the kids were much younger. This time I'd like to build a home for sparrows and redstarts as well. The hole has to be of a different size for each species and sparrows are very sociable birds so they like to live with a couple of families in row houses. 

 

Mit einem Meisenkasten haben wir angefangen. Mumpel hat mit Thomas zusammen extra noch ein kleines Stück Holz mit Öffnung vor den eigentlichen Kasten gebaut, damit Katzen nicht mit der Pfote um die Ecke greifen können. Der Kasten muss jetzt noch mit einer Biofarbe gestrichen werden und dann können wir ihn aufhängen. 

We started the project with another tit box and Mumpel and Thomas put an extra piece of wood with a hole in it in front of the actual box so that cats cannot reach around the corner to grab the babies with their arms. Now we'll have to paint it with a biological color and then hang it up onto a tree at home. 

An der Seite haben die beiden einen Nagel reingemacht, der die Front zuhält. Wenn man den Nagel entfernt, kann die Front hochgeklappt werden, um das Nest zu reinigen. Was ich nicht wusste, ist, dass man die Vogelhäuser tatsächlich schon ganz früh im Jahr aufhängen soll, spätestens im Februar. Auch hier brauchen die Vögel ein bisschen Zeit, um sie anzunehmen und viele brüten auch schon recht früh. 

On the left side Mumpel put a nail that keeps the front side close. When we need to clean the nest we can take the nail out and then put up the front. One thing I didn't know is that you are supposed to hang up the nesting boxes in february already because many birds breed early in the year and also they do need time to accept the boxes.
