Crab apples and workshop - Zieräpfel und Werkstatt

I wish all of you - although I am a bit late - a happy and healthy 2021!

Thomas and I collected these little beautiful red crab apples from our tree in the garden the day before yesterday. I love the color of them and now we put them into a glas and on our couch table for decoration. I had been waiting for the apples to grow all year since we have the tree and now here they are. There are enough apples left for the birds on the tree.

Actually we were in the garden to plant some tulips and crocuses - they were due to be planted before december but what does it help - although putting them into soil too late we hope we'll see some tulips in spring. In october I already planted some corcuses and I can see them growing already!

Cookie was in the garden with us. Mumpel took the picture, using a filter.

The excursion into the garden was obviously so tiring that Cookie fell asleept sitting on the couch afterwards. I took this photo right before she closed her eyes and started to snore.

My mom gave this amaryllis to me for St. Nicholas and it is starting to blossom now.

We were by ourselves over the change of the years. It was different to the years before when we saw all our neighbours around twelve. Nobody was on the street this year although quite many people in the surrounding area started their fireworks.

Also we have been to the workshop building new shelves to have more room for storage. It sounded like a plan to be accomplished in a short time but of course like always it took us days. But it was fun and we really needed to change something to getting more space to work in the workshop.

While we are building Cookie is chewing on a piece of wood.

We are trying to take it slow this week, Thomas is still at home on vacation. We still have our christmas decoration - its all different to the years before when I was happy to get rid of it right after christmas. See the gnom girl on the left in the picture? It was a present for christmas from my mom.

With this picture from Mumpel I say goodbye for now. Unfortunately we had no snow on christmas but that doesn't keep Mumpel from drawing a happy snowman. HAVE A NICE WEEK EVERYONE!

Today I have a pumpkin soup recipe for you. We are in a kind of pumpkin fever at the time. Several Halloween pumpkins with lights are standing in front of the house and in the kitchen we regularly have Hokkaido to cook soup from it. Especially Mumpel loves it it and wants to eat pumpkin soup every day. Yesterday she had the idea to take it to the stable instead of tea to keep herself warm during hours and hours outside with the horses.

Recipe for Pumpkin Soup (This soup is easily and quickly made and tastes really good)

For a large pot of pumpkin soup you need:

- 2 big Hokkaidos
- 3 large onions
- 1,5 kg of potatoes
- broth
- pumpkin oil
- Shoyu

This is how you do it:

Wash and dry the Hokkaidos and cut them each in the middle (You don't need to get rid of the skin because you can eat it). Turn the halfs around and remove the seeds with a spoon. Then cut stripes out of each half and afterwards cut little peaces from the stripes.

Remove the skin of the onions and cut into quarters. Sear them in a large pot with the pumpkin seed oil. Meanwhile remove skin from the potatoes and cut them in quarters as well. Put them into the pot with the pumpkin pieces and sear  with the onions. Cook off with quite some Shoyu and give broth and water into the pot. Let it all cook for about 20 minutes then mix the soup so it gets liquid.

We had roasted bread with the soup during the last couple of days and that was very yummy to us. We took bread and cut it into little pieces and then seared it in a pan with olive oil and put a little salt on the little breads in the end.

In case you try this recipe I'll be happy to hear if you liked it.

I've been to the tree nursery - again!! - actually I wanted to look for a rather small walnut tree. When I came in I saw this really beautiful and impressing crab apple tree, that has loads of red apples already and will keep them all through winter season. It's a crab apple with the name "Red Sentinel" and we decided to get one of those for our new garden. I think these apples are beautiful - I will decorate them around the house and also make compote from them. Another thing I like about it is that the birds in our garden will have food for winter time. There are other kinds of crab apples that do not keep their apples as long as this one does and in addition their apples also get rather squishy towards the end of winter. This one hold on to his fruits until springtime and has no squishy apples.

Doesn't this "Red Sentinel" have wonderful fruits? This is why they also call him "red christmas apple". My mom has warned me though. When I told her I want to get one of these crab apples she said right away: "Oh don't do it you will only have squishy apples lying on the ground and they make so much work." Of course she is right. On the one hand. But I like it so much I don't care about the work - yet. :-)

- Who likes this tree as much as I do? Do you know it?
