Pottery of the Teutons - Töpfern wie die Germanen

Mumpel und ich nehmen immernoch die Germanen durch. Wir haben eine kleine Dokumentation gesehen und erfahren, dass die Germanen noch keine Töpferscheibe besaßen. Sie haben zum Herstellen ihrer Gefäße die Wulsttechnik angewandt. Mumpel hat aus Ton diese Schale in besagter Technik hergestellt, man kann das gut auf dem Bild gut sehen weil sie auf dem Kopf steht.

Mumpel and I are still working on our Teutons subject. We watched a documentary the other day and found out that they didn't have potter's wheels yet back then. Instead to create their vessels they used a speacial coiling technique to shape the clay. Mumpel did a little bowl using the coiling technique, you can see it on the picture as the bowl is upside down.

Zwar haben wir Frühling aber einen Schneemann kann man trotzdem immer gebrauchen.

Mumpels Heft zu den Germanen nimmt Gestalt an. Wir haben schon soviel gemacht, dass wir ein zweites Heft angefangen haben.

Mumpel is getting there with her booklet on Teutons. In fact we already did so much about them that we started a new notebook.

Wir haben über die Jahreszeitenfeste der Germanen gesprochen und sie in diesem Kreisbild festgehalten.

We have spoken about the seasonal festivities of the Teutons and Mumpel drew this circle explaining them.

Mittags haben wir vor dem Mittagessen noch schnell einen Apfelkuchen aus den letzten Äpfeln gebacken. Mumpel liebt backen - und Kuchen.

Shortly before lunch we hurried baking an apple cake from our remaining apples. Mumpel loves baking and cake as well.

Wir haben Thomas in der Werkstatt besucht und draußen auf dem überdachten Holzstapel ganz oben direkt unter dem Dach ein Amselnest gefunden mit nur einem Ei. Mal schauen, ob die Amsel es ausbrütet. Wir haben einige Zeit gewartet, aber sie nicht gesehen. Hoffentlich kommt sie wieder.

We visited Thomas at the workshop and outside right on top of the stack of wood under the roof we found this blackbird nest with only one egg in it. I hope the mother will come back. We waited quite some time for her to return but we haven't seen her.

Kolumba Museum

Zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr wollten wir mit den Kindern gern die Rembrandt Ausstellung in Köln anschauen, sind aber dann, nachdem wir gesehen haben, wieviel im Wallraf-Richartz Museum los war, im Kolumba Museum gelandet. Das Kolumba Museum ist ein Kunstmuseum das zum Erzbistum Köln gehört. Es wurde auf die im Krieg zerstörte Kirche St. Kolumba gebaut und integriert die Reste dieser Kirche in seinem Neubau. Im Innenhof kann man sehen, wie alt und neu kombiniert wurden. 

During the christmas holidays we wanted to visit the Wallraf Richartz museum in cologne which contains an exhibition of Rembrandt but when we got to the museum it was so crowded inside that we decided to visit the Kolumba museum instead. The Kolumba museum belongs to the Archdiocese of colonge and is an art museum. It was built on top of the church of St. Kolumba that was destroyed during war and it contains the rests of the church inside. In the inner courtyard you can see the combination of old and new buildings. 

Die Bäume im Innenhof nennen sich Gleditschien, auch "falscher Christusbaum" oder Lederhülsenbaum. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass der Hof im Frühjahr und Sommer richtig schön aussieht. Jetzt im Winter hat man nur die langen Hülsen am Baum hängen sehen. 

These trees in the inner courtyard are called gleditsia trees or sweet locust or thorny locust. I can imagine them looking really nice during spring and summer time. Now during winter we could only see its legumes. 

Das ganze Museum hat eine beeindruckende Architektur. Es ist ganz modern und wenn man durch diese Tür geht kommt man in den überdachten Raum, in dem sich die Reste der ehemaligen Kirche St. Kolumba befinden.

The whole museum has a pretty impressive architecture. Its a modern building but when you walk through this huge door you enter the room of the destroyed church. 

Über eine Brücke kann man durch die ehemalige Kirche gehen. Hinten an der Wand sieht man auch wieder, wie der Neubau auf die alten Steine draufgesetzt wurde. Peter Zumthor hat dieses Gebäude konzipiert. Man hört so gut wie nichts von draußen, obwohl sich das Museum mitten in der Stadt befindet und jede Menge kleiner Löcher im oberen Bereich des Neubaus befinden, die nicht mit Glas ausgestattet sind. Es war eiskalt in der Kirche aber für mich war es der schönste und interessanteste Teil des ganzen Museums. 

We could walk through the former church using a wooden bridge that lead us through it. In the back we could see how the new building was built right on top of the old stones, it really does look like a combination of old and new, which it is. We could hear almost no noises from the streets outside although the museum is located in the middle of the city of cologne and although its new walls have a bunch of holes with no glass in them. It was so very cold in there but to me it was the most interesting and nice part of the whole museum. 

Das ist die Außenwand bzw. die Glaswände einer kleinen Marienkapelle. Wenn man aus dem Museum wieder herausgeht und links um die Ecke geht, kommt man in die Kapelle. Dort sind wir ganz am Schluss gewesen, dort steht auch die Statue der heiligen Kolumba. 

What you see here is the outer glass walls of a little chapel of St. Mary. When you leave the museum and turn left, then walk around the corner you get to the chapel. A statue of Kolumba is hanging in there, we went to the chapel at the end of our visit.

Es gab so wahnsinnig viel zu sehen in den vielen Ausstellungsräumen, alte und zeitgenössische Kunst, dass ich hier nur stellvertretend ein paar Bilder zeige. Beschriftungen and sämtlichen Kunstwerken fehlten, wir haben aber am Eingang ein kleines Büchlein bekommen, in dem alle Werke aufgelistet waren. Für mich ist das Konzept des lebendigen Museums aber hauptsächlich in der überbauten Kirche aufgegangen. 

There were so very many art works to see in so many exhibition rooms, old as well as contemporary art. I show some pictures vicarious for all the art works, it's just to much otherwise. None of the art works had any explanitions with it but when we entered the museum we got a little booklet with explanations in it. The concept of a living museum to me was fulfilled mostly in the old church with the surrounding new building.

In der Marienkapelle hängt eine Statue der heiligen Kolumba - a statue of Kolumba is hanging in the little chapel

Auf dem Rückweg zum Parkhaus haben wir noch im Cafe Eigel Halt gemacht und Kaffee und Kakao getrunken. Im Schaufenster steht dieses riesige, tolle Lebkuchenhaus als Dekoration. Die Fensterscheibe davor war voll von kleinen Fingerabdrücken von den Kindern, die dort standen und gestaunt haben. 

On the way back to the car we stopped at Cafe Eigel and had coffee and hot chocolate. They have this huge beautiful gingerbread house in their store window. The window was full of little fingerprints from all the kids standing in front of it looking at that really nice decoration. 

Claude Monet

Seit dieser Woche beschäftigen wir uns mit dem Maler Claude Monet. Ich habe ein ganz gutes Buch gefunden, das verschiedenste Maler und Malstile kurz und interessant abbildet. Oben auf jeder Seite ist eine Zeitleiste, auf der man sehen kann, wann derjenige gelebt hat und wer zur Zeit desjenigen Malers noch auf der Welt unterwegs war. 

This week we started having a closer look at the painter Claude Monet. I have found a pretty good book for children, showing different painters and styles of painting. On the top of each page there is a time line on which you can see during what years the painter lived and who else lived then. 

Das ist das Buch und es gibt noch ein zweites davon, in dem man noch mehr Künstler findet. Wir werden uns nun einmal pro Woche mit einem von Monets Bildern genauer befassen. 

This is the book and there is a second one in which you can find more artists. We will look at Monets different paintings once a week for a couple of weeks now and talk each painting through. 

Ich habe mir zusätzlich den Wikipedia-Eintrag ausgedruckt, der aber so lang ist, dass ich die relevanten Stellen rausgesucht und gekennzeichnet habe. Wenn das Ganze zu lang wird kann es sich keiner mehr merken und es wird uninteressant. 

Additionally I printed out the pages about Monet from Wikipedia. The article about him is so long though - I marked the really important passages to keep it interesting for the kids. If it gets too long noone will remember anything and it gets boring. 

 

Am Stall haben wir gestern diese Maus gefunden, Thomas sagt das ist eine Wühlmaus. Sie war in der Reithalle unterwegs, wo Mumpel gerade mit dem Shetty reiten wollte. Das ging dann aber nicht weil die Maus quer durch die Halle gehüpft ist und Mumpel Angst hatte, das Shetty könnte versehentlich drauf treten. Wir haben die Maus in einen Eimer gesetzt und nach draußen gebracht.

Yesterday at the stable we found this mouse in the middle of the riding hall. Thomas says it is a vole. She was running criss-cross through the hall where Mumpel was just about to ride with a shetty. She was afraid the shetty could step on the mouse by mistake so we got a bucket and put the mouse into it and brought it outside.

This is the shetty Mumpel was riding yesterday. Can you see it - it is actually a unicorn. :-)

Weil es so wahnsinnig kalt geworden ist, war ich froh, dass ich beim Putzen helfen konnte. Das ist immernoch besser, als einfach rumzustehen und zu warten. Wir haben noch mehrere Gummis gefunden und dem Shetty Zöpfe gemacht. Es kann ja nicht schaden, wenn man chic aussieht. :-)

I helped Mumpel brush the shetty before riding. It has become so very cold now that I was happy to be able to help. Much better than just standing around waiting in the cold. We found several ribbons and decorated the shetty with braids. It's always a good idea to look nice when you go out. :-)
