Inuit and harvest - Inuit und Ernte

Wir sind immernoch bei den Wikingern, bzw. von dort aus auf die Inuit gekommen. Eigentlich wollten wir mit den Wikingern schon längst fertig sein und zum Mittelalter übergehen, doch das Thema hat uns so viel Spaß gemacht und ich habe diese Bücher passend zum Thema noch gefunden, also lesen wir noch etwas länger darüber. Das Mittelalter läuft ja nicht weg. 

We are still reading about the vikings and also about the Inuit. Actually we wanted to be through with vikings and greenland residentsby now. We thought we could already move on the middle ages but we had so much fun reading about inuit and vikings and I found some more interesting books so we read some more about all of it. I suppose the middle ages will wait for two more weeks.

Nach "Ein Schiff nach Grönland" von Ingeborg Engelhardt lesen wir jetzt dieses Buch über das Leben der Kinder der Baffin Insel in Kanada. Es gefällt uns bisher gut, veranschaulicht das tägliche Leben der Inuit, ihren Kampf im Überleben im Eis, ihre Kultur, Nahrungssuche und vielem mehr. Es ist in teils spannenden, teils lustigen einzelnen Geschichten geschrieben. 

After reading "A ship to greenland" from Ingeborg Engelhardt we now read a biographic story about life of the children of the Baffin Island in Canada. We like the stories about the Inuits' daily life, their culture, their struggle with the hard life in the ice and their ways of finding food and hunting a lot. It is written in partly funny and partly serious rather short stories of an Inuit child.

Einen Gedanken möchte ich hier teilen: das Buch von Ingeborg Engelhardt hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Ich habe daraufhin nachgeschaut, ob ich noch weitere Bücher von ihr kaufen kann, doch das geht schlecht, weil sie nicht mehr verlegt wird. Man kann sie höchstens über Antiquariate kaufen. Ich verstehe nicht, warum so gut geschriebene, interessante und in spannende Geschichten eingebettete Geschichtsbücher einfach nicht mehr verlegt werden. Natürlich ist das Buch schon alt, aber man hätte es doch einfach neu auflegen und den Einband moderner gestalten können. Die Geschichte ist einfach gut und auch noch eine wahre Geschichte der Wikinger auf Grönland. Mir ist das schon ein paarmal aufgefallen, dass ältere Autoren nicht mehr neu aufgelegt werden. Doch viele (natürlich nicht alle) neue Bücher haben einfach gefühlt viel weniger Inhalt als die älteren Bücher, die auch noch sprachlich vielleicht etwas mehr Wortschatz verlangen als viele Bücher von heute. 

Wie auch immer - wir haben uns zwei weitere ihrer Bücher rausgesucht. Eins konnte man neu kaufen, das andere bestellen wir gebraucht. Passend zum Mittelalter geht es dann einmal um Hexenprozesse und einmal um Barbarossa. 

I would like to share one thought here: The last book we read "A ship to greenland" we all liked so much that I tried to get some other books of the same author. I found that that is not as easy to accomplish as I thought because her books are not being published anymore. Maybe antiquarian bookshops have them. I find it such a pity that older but very interestingly written books with embedded history are not published anymore. Of course this book is an old book but in my opinion it could have been easily printed with a modern cover. The story of the vikings of greenland is simply good and a true story as well. I noticed that this happens with quite many older authors or books. But many (of course not all) of the new books often appear to have not as much content as older books and also the speech in them is often much simpler and therefore to me a bit boring. 

However - we will order two more books from I. Engelhardt, one is about the witch trials and the other one about King Barbarossa, so it will fit in our subject of the middle ages perfectly.

 Da kommen doch tatsächlich jetzt noch neue Gurken, ich konnte es nicht glauben.

I couldn't believe it but we will be having more cucumbers.

Morgen gibt es Kürbissuppe aus unserem ersten selbstgezogenen Kürbis.

Our first home grown hokkaido is ready and we will have soup from it tomorrow.

Erik the Red - Erik der Rote

Kommende Woche beenden wir unsere Epoche über die Wikinger. Als Letztes haben wir über Erik den Roten gesprochen, der erst auf Island und später in Grönland gesiedelt hat. Weiter ging es dann mit den Wikingern als Händler.

In the upcoming week we will finish our studies of the vikings. What we talked about during the last days was Erik the Red, who settled in Iceland and later on in Greenland. After that we moved on to the vikings becoming merchants.

Die Wikinger kamen aus Skandinavien und eroberten ganz schön viele Gebiete in Europa.

Coming from Scandinavia the vikings conquered quite a whole lot of european areas.

Wir haben gelernt, dass sie von Grönland aus sogar bis nach Nordamerika gesegelt sind. Mumpel hat das Karten zeichnen für sich entdeckt. :-)

We learned that they even sailed to North America, coming from Greenland. Mumpel found out that she really likes drawing maps. :-)

Meine Freundin hat mir dieses verspätetete Geburtstagsgeschenk gebracht, über das ich mich sehr gefreut habe. Ein toller Strauß Rosen ist das!

My friend came over to bring me a belated birthday present. I love this bunch of roses, aren't those the most beautiful colors...

Nun stehen sie auf dem Couchtisch, früh morgens sitze ich bei Kerzenlicht und Rosenstrauß und schmökere noch ein wenig im Gartenratgeber, bevor der Alltag losgeht.

They are on the couch table now and early in the mornings I sit with candles and roses and browse my gardening book before every day life kicks in.

Garden gate, vikings and raspberry - Gartentor, Wikinger und Himbeere

Passend zu unserem Gartenzaun haben Thomas und Mumpel am letzten Wochenende ein Rolltor gebaut. Mumpel hatte richtig Spaß beim Bauen des Rahmens, beim Streichen der Bretter und anschließend beim Anschrauben der Bretter auf den Rahmen. Wir müssen es nochmal streichen, einmal reicht nicht, es hat noch einen Farbunterschied zu den Zaunelementen. Oben kommt noch eine Holzabdeckung drauf, damit man die Schiene nicht sieht. Es geht immer weiter ein Stückchen voran im Garten.

We now have a rolling gate matching our wooden fence in the garden. Thomas and Mumpel built it last weekend and Mumpel really had fun building the frame, painting and then adjusting the boards onto the frame. We have to paint it one more time, painting it once was not enough as there is still a difference in contrast compared to the fence.

Der Hartriegel bekommt immer mehr Blüten und die sind wirklich riesig!

Dafür sind die Radieschen am Wochenende erntebereit, sie gucken schon aus der Erde.

Neben Englisch und Länderkunde beschäftigen wir uns noch mit den Wikingern. Wir lesen zusammen im Was-ist-Was Buch und Mumpel hat diese Karte von Skandinavien gezeichnet. Vieles wissen wir ja schon von den Germanen, anderes unterscheidet sich und wir diskutieren darüber. In der nächsten Woche wollen wir dazu Hamlet aus dem Buch der Germanen lesen.

Besides English and Geography we are still reading and talking about the vikings and how they lived. We read together and Mumpel made this card from scandinavia where they lived. We discuss about how they differ compared to the teutons living southward. Next week we want to grab our book about the teutons and read about Hamlet in it.

Im Europaatlas für Kinder haben wir Skandinavien nachgeschlagen und über das jeweilige Land gelesen, damit wir wissen, wo die Wikinger genau lebten.

In our book about the countries of Europe we looked up scandinavia to see where the vikings lived.

Nachmittags haben wir im Garten die erste fast reife Himbeere gefunden. Nun müssen wir sie durch vier teilen. :-)

Found the first raspberry in the garden now we have to devide it into four pieces. :-)

Der Storchschnabel vor den Hortensien hat angefangen zu blühen und sieht ganz schön aus.

Während wir im Garten sind, hat sich Cookie wieder auf die Couchlehne geschlichen, wo sie eigentlich nicht drauf soll. Aber von da oben kann man eben besser sehen, was im Garten los ist. Es ist einfach eine dumme Sache, wenn man so ein kleiner Hund ist. Na wenigstens sieht sie aus als hat sie ein schlechtes Gewissen. Oder doch nicht?

While we are out in the garden, Cookie has sneaked onto the back of the couch where she is actually supposed to NOT go. But of course from up there she has a much better view into the garden. What a stupid thing to be a tiny Chihuahua, you can never see enough. Well she does look like she is ashamed - then again - maybe not.

Squishies and Teutons - Squishies und Germanen

Mumpel hat ein neues Hobby - sie bastelt im Moment gerne sogenannte Squishies. Ihre Freundin hat Ihr davon erzählt, dass man sich diese Spielzeuge zum in der Hand drücken selber machen kann. Dann sind sie auch nicht giftig, so wie es diejenigen sind, die man kaufen kann, da sie aus Plastik bestehen und jede Menge Weichmacher enthalten. 

Mumpel has got a new hobby - she loves making squishies. Her friend told her of this way of crafting these toys instead of buying them. This way they are not toxic because they are not made from plastic don't have any plasticizers in them like the ones do that you can buy.

Mumpel malt einfach Bilder auf Papier, jeweils eine Vorderseite und eine Rückseite, füllt in die Mitte Wolle ein und klebt dann alles mit Tesafilm zu, so dass die Außenhaut des Squishies komplett aus Tesa besteht. 

Mumpel draws two pictures for one squishy - one for the front page and one for the back side and then puts wool into it. After that the squishy is being wrapped all over with scotch tape.

Wir haben mittlerweile so viele von diesen kleinen Gesellen, dass sie gar nicht mehr alle in die große Box dafür passen. Das hier auf den Bildern ist nur eine kleine Auswahl. Aber ich freue mich, dass es ihr so viel Spaß macht, die Squishies zu basteln.  

Meanwhile we have so very many of these toys that they don't even fit into the large box we have for them. What you see on the pictures is just a small selection of them. But I'm really happy with the fact that Mumpel has so much fun creating the squishies. 

 

Mit den Römern sind wir jetzt endgültig durch und lesen jetzt einiges zu den Germanen, schließlich gehörten sie in die gleiche Zeit. Dazu haben wir verschiedene Bücher zur Auswahl, von "Was-ist- Was" über "Die Sagen der Germanen" bis zu einem kleinen Runenbüchlein.

We have completed our section about the Romans and went straight on to learning a few things about the Teutons as they belong to the same time in history. We have different books we read from like a book about the legends of the Teutons as well as an informative book that expains the time and a little booklet with runes in it.

Dieses kleine Büchlein haben wir vor Jahren aus einem unserer Dänemark Urlaube mitgebracht, als wir unter anderem Bork Havn, eine Wikingersiedlung besucht haben. Seitdem ist es fester Bestandteil unserer Bibliothek. 

This little booklet about the gods and goddesses of the Teutons we brought back home from one of our trips to denmark years ago. When we spent our vacation there we visited a Viking museum named Bork Haven which the kids loved. Eversince then we have it in our library.

Viking games

One thing Mumpel and Rob did at the viking festival was trying out the Northman's games. This one right here they liked in particular. Three wooden vikings are hiding behind the fence...

Auf dem Wikingermarkt haben wir herausgefunden dass die Nordmänner auch Spiele hatten und Mumpel und Rob haben einige von ihnen ausprobiert. Dieses Spiel hier hat ihnen besonders gut gefallen. Drei Holzwikinger verstecken sich hinter dem Zaun...

...while both kids take sticks and throw them at the figures trying to hit them. They were really having fun on this one laughing and cheering whenever one of them fell.

...während beide Kinder mit kleinen Stöcken versuchen sie zu treffen. An dem Spiel hatten beide wirklich Spass und es gab jede Menge Gelächter und Jubel wenn einer umgekippt ist.

Here we go: they beat the vikings :-) Bowling in former times.

Da haben wirs doch: sie haben die Wikinger besiegt. :-) Kegeln wie in alten Zeiten.

They also already did weightlifting - goes without saying since vikings had to be strong.

Gewichte heben gab es auch schon - das versteht sich ja von selbst schließlich, musste so ein Wikinger stark sein.

Der Holzwikinger soll mit einem langen Stock getroffen werden während man selbst auf einem wackelnden Stück Baumstamm steht. Hier ist Gleichgewicht gefragt!

Adventures like these are living history for the kids and they really do like to learn about ancient cultures.

Ausflüge und Erfahrungen wie diese sind wie lebendige Geschichte für die Kinder und die zwei lernen wirklich gerne Neues über alte Kulturen.

Viking crafts - Kunsthandwerk der Wikinger

Each year during the summer viking festivals take place all over Denmark. The craftsmen arrive not only from Denmark but from all over Europe. We have visited a viking market close to us last weekend. All across the wide grasland belonging to a viking museum viking people built up tents to show crafting of former times. This man is a blacksmith working on an iron.

Jedes Jahr im Sommer finden überall in Dänemark Wikingermärkte statt. Die Kunsthandwerker reisen aus vielen Ländern Europas an. Einen solchen Markt haben wir letztes Wochenende besucht. Überall auf den weitläufigen Wiesen des Wikingermuseums bei dem der Markt stattfand hatten Wikinger ihre Zelte aufgeschlagen und zeigten verschiedenstes altes Handwerk. Auf dem oberen Bild ist ein Schmied zu sehen. 

 

With two big bellows the blacksmith is keeping the fire going that he needs to work the iron in. As we were standing there looking at his work he asked Rob and Mumpel if they would like to help on the bellows so that he could keep working on the iron. Glowing eyes on my kids faces! 

Mit zwei großen Blasebälgen hält der Schmied das Feuer in Gang. Während wir ihm zuschauten fragte er Rob und Mumpel auf einmal ob sie ihm helfen möchten Luft in die Glut zu drücken damit er weiter am Eisen arbeiten kann. Strahlende Gesichter bei den Kindern! 

Chain armor and buckler the viking fought with. At one of the stands the kids tried to lift one of the chain armors and were astonished how heavy it really is. It is hard to imagine how anybody was able to fight in all that iron!

Kettenhemd und Schild in dem die Wikinger gekämpft haben. An einem der Stände haben die Kinder versucht eins der Kettenhemden hochzuheben und waren erstaunt zu erfahren wie schwer sie wirklich sind. Es war schwer sich vorzustellen wie jemand in dem ganzen Eisen kämpfen konnte!

This man has built an antique turning machine which is operated by a foot pedal. While the wood within the construction is turning a tool is being held close to it to cave it. Using hand-forged tools vikings formed bowls, pots and cups. 

Dieser Mann hat eine antike Drehbank nachgebaut die durch ein Fußpedal bedient wird. Während sich das Holz in der Konstruktion dreht wird ein Werkzeug daran gehalten das das Holz zerspahnt und in diesem Fall aushöhlt. Mit handgeschmiedeten Werkzeugen wurden hier Schüsseln, Töpfe und Tassen gefertigt. 

Yarn in beautiful colors, all self dyed with herbal colors. Viking women did a lot of handcrafting like weaving, stitching, kniting, sewing and felting. I want to try dying wool once we get home. I like knitting and doing crochet and I loved those warm colors.

Garn in wunderschönen Farben, selbstgefärbt mit Pflanzenfarben. Wikingerfrauen haben oft und viel Handarbeiten wie weben, sticken, stricken, nähen und filzen gemacht. Ich möchte zu Hause probieren Wolle in Pflanzenfarben zu färben. Ich stricke und häkel gern und ich mag diese warmen Farben sehr. 

This woman crafts braided ribbons using a ten-finger system and she showed me how to do it so I can try it with the kids at home.

An diesem Stand wurden Flechtbänder mit einem Zehnfingersystem hergestellt. Die Wikingerfrau erklärt mir wie das geht damit ich es zu Hause mit den Kindern ausprobieren kann.

Rob was really interested in the arrows. We found a man who crafts bows and arrows and while talking to him we found out that he actually lives real close to our home. He will be coming to spend a day producing arrows with us showing the kids how the viking did it. He knows a lot of the viking history and it was really interesting to listen to him. Rob and Mumpel are excited to have him over to craft with them. 

Rob hat sich sehr für die Pfeile interessiert. Wir haben jemanden gefunden der Pfeile und Bögen herstellt und während wir uns mit ihm unterhalten haben stellte sich heraus dass er gar nicht weit weg von uns wohnt. Er wird bald zu uns nach Hause kommen um einen Tag lang mit den Kindern Pfeile und einen Bogen nach dem Vorbild der Wikinger zu bauen. Er weiss ausserdem eine Menge über die Geschichte der Wikinger und es war sehr interessant ihm zuzuhören. Rob und Mumpel freuen sich schon auf den Wikingertag bei uns zu Hause.
