Advent calendar, Th. Storm and cutting boards - Adventskalender, Storm und Schneidebretter

Als die Kinder vor Kurzem einen langen Nachmittag beim Reiten verbracht haben, habe ich die Zeit genutzt und unsere Adventskalender fertig gemacht. Beide haben jeweils einen Kalender mit diesen abwechselnd roten und grünen Säckchen, die ich an die Treppe gehangen habe. Diese Adventskalender zum selbst bestücken gibt es im Moment bei Tchibo. 

When the kids spent a long afternoon at the stable the other day I took that time to prepare their advent calendars. Each of them has their own calendar with these green and red little sacks  that I hung up on the staircase after I put sweets into the little sacks. I got these calendars at a german shop called Tchibo.

Für Thomas gibt es auch Adventssüßigkeiten. Ich habe ihm die Schokolade in Brottüten verpackt, die nun auf der Treppe stehen.

Thomas gets advent chocolates as well. I put his sweets into little bags with numbers on them and they are now on the stairs as well. 

 

Als Mumpel dann heim kam hat sie direkt bemängelt, dass ich keinen Adventskalender habe und fand das gar nicht gut. Sie hat mir die nächsten zwei Tage lang einen eigenen Kalender gemacht. 

When Mumpel returned home she saw that I don't have an advent calendar and she didn't like that at all so she spent two days on creating a calendar for me. 

Sie hat mir 24 weihnachtliche Bilder gemalt und in eine große Vase gelegt. Darin befindet sich auch eine kleine Lichterkette, so dass ich meinen Adventskalender beleuchten kann. Das ist wirklich viel Arbeit gewesen und ich habe mich so gefreut, dieses schöne Adventsgeschenk zu bekommen. 

She drew 24 christmas pictures for me and put them into one of our vases. She also put some lights into the vase so I have a bright advent calendar now. This was really quite a bit of work and I am so happy she made this for me. 

Rob beschäftigt sich gerade mit ein paar Novellen von Theodor Storm. Wir haben auf der Webseite der Stormgesellschaft gute Informationen und auch Aufgaben gefunden. Den Schimmelreiter haben wir samt Interpretation und Informationen über den Autor nun abgeschlossen. 

Rob is reading some books from the german author Theodor Storm at the time. We found quite good information and tasks on the german website of the Storm foundation. Rob has finished reading "The rider on the white horse" and its interpretation and collecting info about Storm.

In der Werkstatt hat Thomas wieder ein KEIRO Schneidebrett für einen unserer Kunden zusammengebaut. Hier ist das Brett gerade verleimt und verzwungen und muss trocknen. 

At the workshop Thomas built another one of our KEIRO cutting boards for one of our clients. After putting glue and ferrules on it has to dry now before it can be taken off. 

 

 Nun ist der Leim trocken und das KEIRO NIZZA ist schon geschliffen und fertig, geölt zu werden. 

The glue has dried and the KEIRO NIZZA has been sanded by Thomas. It's ready to be oiled now. 

 

So sieht das Eiche-Schneidebrett dann fertig aus, wenn es zum Kunden geschickt wird.

Forest and cookies - Wald und Plätzchen

Unser Sonntagsausflug ging mal wieder in den Wald. Die Buchen haben jetzt zu dieser Jahreszeit die allerschönsten Blätter. Zwischen Tannen und Fichten leuchten sie in den schönsten Rottönen. Wir hatten Glück, die Sonne hat geschienen, es war wieder richtig nett - vor allem ganz ruhig. 

Like so often on sundays we spent this sunday morning in the forest again. All the beeches have the most beautiful leaves now. Inbetween the spruces and firs they shine in their nicest red colors. We were lucky, the sun was out and we had a nice and calm walk. 

 

 Was wir allerdings auch wieder gesehen haben sind die großen abgerodeten Flächen von Fichten. Sie sind alle völlig zerfressen vom Borkenkäfer und können nicht mehr genutzt werden. Sie müssen abgeholzt werden. Das ist alles Holz, das für die weitere Verwendung fehlt. Ich bin gespannt, was in Zukunft gepflanzt werden wird - die Fichte wird wohl erst einmal nicht mehr so oft auftauchen, solange der Borkenkäfer so aktiv ist.

One thing we saw again - as we have before - are these cleared areas. All the spruces that were standing here have been destroyed by bark beetles. These trees had to be cut down, none of this wood can be processed anymore. I'm curios what kind of trees will be planted in the future - spruces probably won't as long as the bark beetle is around. 

 

Thomas hat uns das Innenleben eines der Stämme gezeigt, die am Waldrand aufgestapelt lagen. Dieses Stück Holz ist komplett zerfressen, allerdings hat sich hier wohl kein Borkenkäfer zuschaffen gemacht sondern ein Pilz. 

Thomas showed us a piece of wood from the wood staples along the forest path. This is a piece of totally destroyed wood from inside of the tree trunk. This is not the fault of the bark beetle though, it was a fungus that ate away the wood.

Mumpel  hat einen Minizapfen gefunden - Mumpel found a miniature cone

Zu Hause haben wir die ersten Plätzchen für Weihnachten gebacken. Hier sind zwei Dinge wichtig: früh genug anfangen damit sich kurz vor Weihnachten nicht alles knubbelt und Plätzchen wegpacken damit an Weihnachten überhaupt noch welche da sind. Wir machen immer so viele, dass wir welche naschen können und andere in die Dose gehen. 

When back home we started baking little cookies for christmas. Two things are important for baking cookies: start early enough before christmas so it doesn't get too busy to bake shortly before the holidays and put the cookies away so there are any of them left on christmas. We use to bake quite a lot of them so we can eat cookies and also put some into a box. 

 

 Hier das Rezept für einfache Butterplätzchen:

Man nimmt 200 g Butter, 400 g Mehl, 2 Eier und 180 g Zucker, knetet das Ganze zu einem gleichmäßigen Teig und stellt diesen für 60 Minuten in den Kühlschrank. Anschließend kann man den Teig auf einer bemehlten Unterlage ausrollen und mit Förmchen die Plätzchen ausstechen. Den Backofen auf 160 Grad Umluft vorheizen. Plätzchen mit Eigelb bestreichen und für 15-20 Minuten backen. Aus dem Ofen nehmen und auf einem Gitter abkühlen lassen. 

This is the recipe for the cookies: 

Take 200 g of butter, 400 g flour, 2 eggs and 180 g sugar, knead all of it until it becomes an evenly dough. Put into fridge for an hour. Now roll out dough (put some flour underneath) and cut out cookies with little forms. Heat the oven 160 degrees, put egg yolk onto the cookies and put them into the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes. Let them cool down after taking them out of the oven. 

Die Plätzchen sind lecker geworden, auch wenn die Igel nach dem Backen wie Stachelschweine aussehen. :-)

They turned out yummy even though the hedgehogs looked more like porcupines when baked. :-)

Claude Monet

Seit dieser Woche beschäftigen wir uns mit dem Maler Claude Monet. Ich habe ein ganz gutes Buch gefunden, das verschiedenste Maler und Malstile kurz und interessant abbildet. Oben auf jeder Seite ist eine Zeitleiste, auf der man sehen kann, wann derjenige gelebt hat und wer zur Zeit desjenigen Malers noch auf der Welt unterwegs war. 

This week we started having a closer look at the painter Claude Monet. I have found a pretty good book for children, showing different painters and styles of painting. On the top of each page there is a time line on which you can see during what years the painter lived and who else lived then. 

Das ist das Buch und es gibt noch ein zweites davon, in dem man noch mehr Künstler findet. Wir werden uns nun einmal pro Woche mit einem von Monets Bildern genauer befassen. 

This is the book and there is a second one in which you can find more artists. We will look at Monets different paintings once a week for a couple of weeks now and talk each painting through. 

Ich habe mir zusätzlich den Wikipedia-Eintrag ausgedruckt, der aber so lang ist, dass ich die relevanten Stellen rausgesucht und gekennzeichnet habe. Wenn das Ganze zu lang wird kann es sich keiner mehr merken und es wird uninteressant. 

Additionally I printed out the pages about Monet from Wikipedia. The article about him is so long though - I marked the really important passages to keep it interesting for the kids. If it gets too long noone will remember anything and it gets boring. 

 

Am Stall haben wir gestern diese Maus gefunden, Thomas sagt das ist eine Wühlmaus. Sie war in der Reithalle unterwegs, wo Mumpel gerade mit dem Shetty reiten wollte. Das ging dann aber nicht weil die Maus quer durch die Halle gehüpft ist und Mumpel Angst hatte, das Shetty könnte versehentlich drauf treten. Wir haben die Maus in einen Eimer gesetzt und nach draußen gebracht.

Yesterday at the stable we found this mouse in the middle of the riding hall. Thomas says it is a vole. She was running criss-cross through the hall where Mumpel was just about to ride with a shetty. She was afraid the shetty could step on the mouse by mistake so we got a bucket and put the mouse into it and brought it outside.

Weil es so wahnsinnig kalt geworden ist, war ich froh, dass ich beim Putzen helfen konnte. Das ist immernoch besser, als einfach rumzustehen und zu warten. Wir haben noch mehrere Gummis gefunden und dem Shetty Zöpfe gemacht. Es kann ja nicht schaden, wenn man chic aussieht. :-)

I helped Mumpel brush the shetty before riding. It has become so very cold now that I was happy to be able to help. Much better than just standing around waiting in the cold. We found several ribbons and decorated the shetty with braids. It's always a good idea to look nice when you go out. :-)

Our week - Unsere Woche

Unsere Reise durch das antike Griechenland geht weiter. Troja ist besiegt und wir begleiten seit dieser Woche nun Odysseus auf seinem langen Weg in die Heimat zurück. 

We are still travelling through ancient Greece. Troy has been defeated and since a couple of days we accompany Odysseus on his long journey towards home. 

 

Wir üben das kleine Einmaleins mit Hilfe dieser Karten und jeder Menge Nüssen und Kastanien. Bis auf ein paar wenige Aufgaben sitzt es jetzt. Mit den Karten, die wir immer auf einen Stapel "kann ich" und einen Stapel "muss ich nochmal üben" sortiert haben, ging es deutlich schneller und leichter, als alle Reihen vom Blatt zu lernen. Den Stapel, der noch nicht so gut funktionierte, haben wir uns dann nochmal vorgenommen.

We are practicing multiplication tables using these cards I made and a whole bunch of walnuts and chestnuts. We sort the cards onto two stacks, one for "I know this one" and one for "I have to practice this again". Then we go through the ones that didn't work out once more. This way learning the multiplication tables went a lot faster than just reading all the numbers from a piece of paper.

Mumpel stellt gerade ihr Knüpfkissen fertig. Es fehlt nur noch eine Reihe, dann können wir das Kissen zusammennähen.

Bei den Pferden waren wir natürlich auch, wie in jeder Woche. Mit Toby sind wir im Wald spazieren gegangen. Reiten auf ihm ist im Moment schwierig weil er wegen der Kälte wahnsinnig schnell unterwegs ist und gerne mal losspurtet und man dann leicht runterfallen kann. 

Like in each week we have been to the stable. We went for a walk through the forest with Toby instead of riding because due to the cold weather he falls into a a very fast gallopp and Mumpel was afraid to fall off. 

 

Auch die Shetties haben wir besucht und Mumpel und ihre Freundin haben wieder den kleinen Kindern geholfen, sie zu pflegen und sind mit ihnen spazieren gegangen. 

We visited the Shetties and Mumpel and her friend helped the little kids again and showed them how to take care of horses. Afterwards they went for a walk with the kids and the shetties. 

Abends setze ich mich immer hin und male in meinem Jahreszeitenbuch. Der September und der Oktober sind nun fertig gestellt und beinhalten Rezepte, gemalte Bilder, Gedichte und ein Tagebuch mit unseren Aktivitäten. 

Each night I sit and draw in my seasonal book. September and October are done now and I put in recipes for fall, pictures I drew as well as poems and a diary with all our daily activities.

 Auch im Garten geht es weiterhin voran. Wege und Beete sind jetzt zu erkennen. 

More process was made in the garden. Ways and flower beds are structured now.

St. Martin - Sankt Martin

Gestern ist unsere neue Bücherlieferung angekommen. Darüber habe ich mich sehr gefreut. Ich weiß nicht, wie es Euch geht, aber ich liebe Bücher und versuche, den Kindern ein wenig "Buchliebe" weiterzugeben, weshalb wir alle viel lesen. Es ist immernoch was ganz anderes, ein Buch in der Hand zu haben, als am Kindle oder Smartphone zu lesen, auch, wenn das Lesen von Büchern scheinbar immer weniger wird.

Die meisten Bücher habe ich gebraucht bestellt. Eigentlich wollte ich sie per Fernleihe aus der Bücherei bestellen, damit wir nicht immer alle Bücher kaufen müssen, denn dazu lesen wir zu viel. Doch das ging leider nicht. Die Buchempfehlung für den Wundergarten, für Daddy Langbein und auch für das Bienenbuch habe ich von Eva, die hier ihren Blog schreibt. Die cleveren Tüftler, das Handwerkerbuch, den Kinderbrockhaus über die Ritter und das Buch über Luther habe ich auf dieser Seite gefunden. Es ist eine Seite über Charlotte Mason, die einzige ins Deutsche übersetzte Charlotte Mason Seite, soweit ich weiß. 

Yesterday we got our newly ordered books which I am very happy about. I don't know how you feel about it but I love books and reading and I try to pass a little of my "booklove" on to the kids. We all do read a lot. To me it is totally different and also more fun to read a real paperback book rather than reading on a kindle or on a smartphone. I have the feeling though that reading books gets less and less popular. 

Most of the books are second hand. I was actually going to lend them from the library but they didn't have any of the titles I wanted. Usually they are able to order books that they don't have in the library and get them from another library that has them but they do this only for grown-up books and not for childrens' books. Eva recommended  "The secret Kingdom" from Nek Chand to me, as well as the book about the bees and the title "Daddy Longlegs". Have a look at Eva's blog here. The book about the famous inventors, about the crafts, about Martin Luther and about the knights of the middle ages I found on a website about Charlotte Mason, you can have a lootk at it here. As far as I know it's the only german page about Charlotte Mason.

 

Dieses Waldbild habe ich noch von unserem Ausflug am Sonntag gefunden. Ich habe versucht, die sonne festzuhalten, da sie bald für viele Wochen weg sein wird. Heute waren wir zwar nicht im Wald, dafür aber bei den Pferden. Es war ganz schön kalt und wir waren dann doch alle froh, als wir uns wieder aufwärmen konnten. 

This is another photo from our walk through the forest on sunday. I tried to catch the sunlight as I know we will be without much sun for the next weeks. We haven't been to the forest today but at the stable instead. It was so cold, everyone was happy to be back in the warm house again. 

 

Wir haben Martinswecken mit einem Hefeteig gebacken, den ich allerdings noch verbessern muss. Der Teig ist zu flüssig geworden. Deshalb konnte man ihn nicht kneten und wir haben ihn dann in Muffinförmchen gefüllt. Das sind also Martinsmuffins geworden. :-) Ich lasse Euch das Rezept trotzdem so hier, wie ich es gemacht habe, vielleicht nehmt ihr einfach weniger Milch. Lecker waren sie auf jeden Fall trotzdem!

Rezept für Martinsweckchen mit Hefe: 

Du brauchst 1000 g Mehl, 500 ml Milch lauwarm (ich werde demnächst weniger nehmen),  2 Würfel Hefe, 260 g Zucker, 200 g flüssige Butter und 4 Eier.

Die Hefe wird mit der Milch verrührt, den Rest der Zutaten mixt man in einer Schüssel. Nun alles zusammengeben und aufs Doppelte aufgehen lassen. Das kann man im Backofen bei 50 Grad machen. Den Teig für ca. 20 Minuten in den vorgeheizten Backofen stellen und eine Tasse Wasser daneben stellen. 

Teig in Muffinförmchen gießen und anschließend für ca. 15 Minuten backen - Herd auf Umluft 180 Grad vorheizen. 

We made little Martinbreads with a yeast dough. I have to admit I will have to change the recipe for the dough next time we make these breads because for some reason it got too liquid. We couldn't knead it so we filled it into little muffin tins. We actually made Martinsmuffins. :-) I will write down the recipe here the way I did the little breads anyhow, maybe if you make them just take a little less milk. They turned out very tasty in the end anyhow. 

Recipe for Martinbreads with yeast 

You need 1000 g dough, 500 ml of warm milk ( I will take less next time), 2 cubes of yeast, 260 g sugar, 200 g liquid butter and 4 eggs. 

Mix yeast with the milk and then mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl seperately. Afterwards mix everything together and put the dough into the oven at 50 degrees to let it rise to double as much as it was. Put a glas of water into the oven as well while doing so. 

Now fill dough into muffin tins and put them back into the oven for 15 minutes at 180 degrees to get baked.

Mushrooms everywhere - Überall Pilze

Es ist plötzlich ganz kalt geworden. Morgens sieht man überall Reif. Der Winter steht vor der Tür aber wir haben Glück: Es ist noch nicht grau und trist draußen, die Sonne hat die letzten Tage geschienen und wir haben gestern einen Ausflug in den einsamen Wald in der Nähe gemacht. 

 

Temperatures dropped during the last days. Each morning we can see hoarfrost on the gras and bushes. Winter is coming soon now but we are lucky: it's not all drowsy and grey outside yet, the sun has been shining and we went for a long walk through the lonely forest together yesterday. 

Auf diesem Spaziergang haben wir so viele Pilze gesehen wie niemals in lange nicht. Rob hatte seine Kamera mit und hat Fotos gemacht, ich habe diese Aufnahmen mit meinem Handy gemacht. Wir kennen uns leider mit Pilzen gar nicht aus, trotzdem sind es faszinierende Lebewesen wenn man bedenkt, wieviel Fläche die Myzel unterirdisch einnehmen können. 

During this walk we saw so very many mushrooms everywhere in the forest like we haven't for a long time. Rob had his camera and took pictures and I took some Photos with my mobile. Unfortunately the four of us have no knowledge about mushrooms so we wouldn't pick any as we do not know which ones are poisoning and which are not. But they are fascinating creatures if you think about how broad their myceliums grow underneath the soil.

Wir haben an den Opa denken müssen. Er kannte sich gut mit Pilzen aus und brachte regelmässig welche zum Verarbeiten und Essen mit. Leider können wir ihn nicht mehr fragen, da er vor einigen Jahren gestorben ist. Es war trotzdem schön, uns an ihn zu erinnern, während wir über ihn gesprochen haben.

We thought of grandpa who would've known exactely what the names of these mushrooms are and he also would've known which ones we could eat and which ones we better leave in the forest. He went to search for mushrooms to cook them regularly. We cannot ask him anymore. He died several years ago. It was a nice occasion though to remember grandpa as we spoke about him.

Thomas zeigt den Kindern, wie so ein Pilz von innen aussieht. Manche kann man leicht zwischen zwei Fingern eindrücken, dann sieht man, wie sie ihre Sporen hinauspusten. Das sieht dann aus wie eine kleine Staubwolke, die den Pilz verlässt. Das weiß er noch von seinen Spaziergängen mit Opa als Kind und erzählt den Kindern davon. 

Thomas shows Rob and Mumpel what a mushroom looks like from inside. If you press the mushroom a little with two fingers it blows out little clouds of  spores which then grow in a nearby place in the forest. It looks like a little dusty clood that leaves the mushroom. Thomas knows this from his walks through the forests with his dad when he was a child. Now he tells the kids about it.
