Tuff caves in Cotignac - Tuffsteinhöhlen in Cotignac

Cotignac is a another beautiful little village in the department of Var, in south france. We actually wanted to see the night market with live music which they do once a week but when we arrived there we found out that they only do it during the most busy times in summer. So we walked around the little town and enjoyed very much more pretty french sights. 

Cotignac ist ein weiteres hübsches kleines Dorf im Departement Var in Südfrankreich. We wollten eigentlich zum einmal wöchentlich stattfindenden Nachtmarkt mit Livemusik, aber als wir ankamen, fanden wir heraus, dass es diesen nur während der Hochsaison gibt. Trotzdem haben wir einmal mehr die schönen Eindrücke eines weiteren malerischen, französischen Dorfes genossen.

What we didn't know was that Cotignac has a wall of tuff rocks with caves in it. The formations of the stone were beautiful and cave men must have lived in those buildings in former times. Rob and Mumpel found it so very interesting and imagined how nice it must be to live in one of these caves and be able to overlook the surrounding area. 

Was wir nicht wussten, ist, dass Cotignac eine Felswand aus Tuffstein hat, die sogar Höhlen beherbergt. Die Felsformationen sahen toll aus und vor langer Zeit müssen hier einmal Höhlenbewohner gelebt haben. Rob und Mumpel fanden das alles sehr interessant und haben sich vorgestellt, wie das wohl wäre, hier oben in den Höhlen im Berg zu wohnen und die ganze Gegend überblicken zu können.

I just had to take a picture of this beautiful house. It was located right beneath the tuff wall. Doesn't this look romantic? The whole path of houses parallel to the rocks was so pretty. Mumpel's idea was to move in and stay.

Von diesem schönen Haus musste ich einfach ein Bild machen. Es liegt direkt unterhalb der Felswand. Sieht das nicht romantisch aus? Der ganze Weg, diese ganze Parallelstrasse zur Tuffsteinwand mit seinen Häuschen, sah so hübsch aus. Mumpel hatte die Idee, gleich hier einzuziehen und hier zu bleiben.

Moustiers Sainte-Marie

This is the beautiful village of Moustiers Sainte-Marie. It is situated close to Lac Sainte-Croix in the mountains, in fact it snuggles right in before the cliffs. We found this village quite pittoresque. 

Hier seht ihr das hübsche Dörfchen Moustiers Sainte-Marie. Es liegt nah am Lac Sainte-Croix in den Bergen. Es sieht fast so aus als schmiegt es sich an die Felswand an. Wir fanden das Dorf sehr malerisch.

Moustiers has been awarded one of the most beautiful villages in france. The combination of its location, its pastel colored houses and roofs, its city surrounding wall, its lovely chapel as well as the fact that it is devided into two parts by a little cascade all sum up to that believe. It attracts loads of tourists each year. 

Moustiers wurde als eins der schönesten Dörfer Frankreichs ausgezeichnet. Die Kombination seiner Lage, der pastellfarbenen Häuser und Dächer, seiner Stadtmauer und der hübschen Kirche und die Tatsache, dass das Dorf durch einen kleinen Wasserfall in zwei Teile unterteilt ist führten zu dieser Auszeichnung. Moustiers Sainte-Marie ist beliebtes Touristenziel.

 The village is also very well visited because of its pottery. Pottery had been the main trade in Moustiers. There is a pottery museum and visitors can do workshops to learn about it. We found the most different kinds of pottery work. We were not allowed to take any pictures of it but I can tell you that they have so beautiful art work in the shops. 

Das Dorf wird ausserdem gut touristisch besucht wegen seiner Töpferarbeiten. Töpfern war das hauptsächliche Handwerk in Moustiers. Es gibt ein Museum zum Thema und ausserdem Workshops, in denen Besucher etwas darüber lernen und selbst töpfern können. Wir haben tolle Ausstellungsstücke gesehen. Leider durfte man in den Geschäften nicht fotografieren aber ich kann Euch sagen, dass es hier schöne Handwerkskunst zu bestaunen gibt.

Gorge du Verdon - Verdonschlucht

Today I have these wonderful pictures of the Verdon gorge for you. This was one of the first excursions we made after arriving in Aups. I had already been to the gorge fourteen years ago and I wanted to see it again. It is still one of the most terrific sights I have seen.

Heute zeige ich Euch diese wunderschönen Bilder der Verdonschlucht. Die Besichtigung dieser Schlucht war einer der ersten Ausflüge, die wir nach unserer Ankunft in Aups gemacht haben. Ich war vor vierzehn Jahren schon einmal hier. Es ist immer noch eine der tollsten Naturimpressionen, die ich bisher gesehen habe.

 I took this picture from a lookout point that was part of a tunnel carved into the mountain. On the day we were there there was also a group of bungee jumpers getting prepared to jump. We didn't stay long enough to watch them though. Just too many people wanting to take a look and not enough space to park

Dieses Bild habe ich vom Aussichtspunkt in einem Tunnel gurch den Berg gemacht. An dem Tag war auch eine Gruppe von Bungee Jumpern da, die sich gerade vorbereitet haben zu springen. Leider dauerte das noch eine Weile und wir sind nicht lange geblieben. Eine Menge Leute warteten darauf, den Aussichtspunkt zu befahren und es gab nur wenig Platz zum parken.

There is a way to go by car which allows you to see the gorge from above and it is called "corniche sublime".  It is a small street leading through a steep coast in serpentines. We enjoyed this trip so much, it took us about two hours to get around once and during all this time had the most beautiful views on the cliffs and the gorgeous large area of limestone mountains around us.

Es gibt einen Weg, den man mit dem Auto um die Schlucht herum fahren kann, den sogenannten "corniche sublime". Das ist eine schmale Serpentinenstrasse im Gebirge. Wir haben diese Fahrt sehr genossen denn sie erlaubt einem, die Schlucht von oben zu betrachten. Fast zwei Stunden haben wir gebraucht, um einmal den ganzen corniche zu fahren und während der ganzen Zeit konnten wir diese wunderschöne Aussicht über die Klippen und dies riesigen, weiten Bergformationen aus Kalkstein geniessen.

The horizontal line that you can see here is the path along the mountains. You actually need to be a little brave if you have trouble with heights because you face the mountain on one side and ... well... the cliff on the other side. Some areas of the path have more space on the cliffside and others have less. Its not really that scary but a little. At least for people like me who don't feel too comfortable with heights. Rob and Mumpel were a little scared but their curiosity outbalanced it pretty much. 

Die waagerechte Linie die ihr hier seht ist die Strasse entlang der Berge. Tatsächlich muss man ein bisschen mutig sein, wenn man Höhenangst, denn natürlich hat man auf der einen Seite die Bergwand und auf der anderen und ... naja... die Klippe auf der anderen. Meist war aber genug Platz bis zur Klippe, dass ich mich nicht zu unwohl fühlte. Ich hab ja schon ein bisschen Höhenangst. Rob und Mumpel fanden es teilweise auch unheimlich, aber ihre Neugier und ihr Interesse überwogen.

Some people call the gorge of verdon the grand canyon of europe. I've seen both and I think its not something you can compare but what they refer to in my opinion is its uniqueness in europe. However, to us it has been an amazing sight. To see what nature can create is simply great. Actually I do believe that nature has somewhat of a healing character. It sets one in context to the earth and the world. After all, we are part of nature and it is good to feel that every once in a while.

Manch einer nennt die Verdonschlucht den Grand Canyon Europas. Ich habe beides gesehen und finde nicht, dass man die beiden Landschaften so einfach vergleichen kann aber was die Leute meinen, ist, glaube ich, seine Einmaligkeit in Europa. Wie auch immer, für uns war das eine erstaunliche Aussicht. Zu sehen, was die Natur erschaffen kann ist einfach toll. Überhaupt glaube ich, dass Natur einen gewissen Heilungscharakter auf uns Menschen hat. Erfahrungen in der Natur setzen den Menschen in einen Zusammenhang mit der Erde und der Welt. Schliesslich sind wir alle Teil der Natur und es tut ab und zu mal gut, das auch zu spüren.

I'm surely not the only one recognizing the fabulous light in provence. Not for nothing great painters like Van Gogh, Matisse or Cezanne have created some of their greatest pictures here and even lived in provence. The sun is just so very bright and the sky mostly looks beautiful. I suppose this dose of vitamin d is what we are usually not used to in England and it made us feel very comfortable. On our way back from france we recognized that even behind Lyon the light already had changed. 

Ich bin sicherlich nicht die Erste, die das fantastische Licht in der Provence bemerkt. Nicht umsonst haben grosse Maler wie Van Gogh, Matisse oder Cezanne hier ihre Bilder gemalt und sogar hier gelebt. Die Sonne scheint einfach so strahlend hell und der Himmel sieht meist wunderschön aus. Ich nehme an, wir sind so viel Vitamin D aus England einfach nicht gewohnt, wir fanden es jedenfalls grossartig! Als wir aus Frankreich zurückgefahren sind, haben wir festgestellt, dass sich sogar hinter Lyon schon das Licht wieder verändert hat.

 In the far distance you can see the bridge over the beginning point of the gorge. Going to the corniche we crossed it by car and now we went underneath it by boat. 

In der Ferne seht ihr die Brücke, die den Anfang der Schlucht markiert. Auf dem Weg zum Corniche sind wir mit dem Auto darüber gefahren, jetzt fahren wir mit dem Boot drunter her.

After driving on the corniche we drove down to "Lac Sainte-Croix", the see into which the river down in the gorge flows into. On its shore there are several boat providers where you can borrow pedal boats or so called "bateaux electriques", electric boats. We took one of the electric boats with a little sunroof on top of it and explored the lake by it. Of course this was great fun for Mumpel and Rob. They have never been on a boat before and steered it. At first, Mumpel was pilot of the boat.

Lac Sainte Croix is actually an artificial lake. It provides a rather huge amount of electricity to the people living in the villages around the sea. The water looks just amazing and I can only say it honestly looks exactely as turquoise as on the pictures. Rob asked me why it looks so beautifully turquoise and so we found out that fluor and microalga are responsible for it. 

Der Sainte Croix See ist ein Stausee, der die umliegenden Dörfer und ihre Bewohner mit Elektrizität versorgt. Das Wasser sieht einfach fantastisch türkis aus und ich kann Euch versichern, dass es in Wirklichkeit genauso aussieht wie auf den Bildern hier. Rob fragte mich, was der Grund für die wunderschöne türkise Farbe ist und wir haben herausgefunden, dass dafür Fluor und Mikroalgen verantwortlich sind.

If you go to Provence I believe you should definitely visit here. It's worth seeing.

Wenn ihr in die Provence fahrt müsst ihr hier unbedingt einen Stopp machen. Es lohnt sich.

Summer in Provence - Sommer in der Provence

Das hübsche Dörfchen Aups in der Provence

This has been a trip Tom and I had been looking forward to for a quite a while. So often we have been to Denmark and although we love the country and its landscape and of course the North Sea we had been talking about visiting South France for almost two years. This summer we realized it and travelled to Provence.

Auf diese Reise haben Tom und ich uns schon einige Zeit gefreut. So oft waren wir schon in Dänemark und obwohl wir das Land lieben, genauso wie seine Dünenlandschaft und natürlich die Nordsee, hatten wir schon seit fast zwei Jahren Pläne gemacht, nach Südfrankreich zu fahren. Dieses Jahr haben wir die Pläne in die Tat umgesetzt und ein kleines Stück der Provence bereist.

Twice a week they have a market in the village. In fact, every single one of the villages in this area has its own market once or twice a week. These markets are typical for the region and they don't only sell food but also clothes, shoes, antiques, lavender fragrances or sachets, childrens' games, sunglases and much more. Some of them even have nightmarkets with live music. 

We enjoyed the markets very much and travelled from village to village each day to visit a new market. Mostly we liked it for the fresh fruit and vegetables they sold. Never a day we didn't go home with loads of olives, tomatoes, melons, nectarines, cherries and other things.

Zweimal in der Woche findet im Dorf ein Markt statt. Tatsächlich hat jedes noch so kleine Dorf in der Gegend mindestens einmal pro Woche Markttag. Diese Märkte sind typisch für die Provence. Es werden nicht nur Obst und Gemüse verkauft, sondern auch Kleider, Schuhe, Antiquitäten, Lavendelparfum oder Duftsäckchen, Spielzeug, Sonnenbrillen und vieles mehr. In manchen Dörfern findet während des Sommers sogar Nachtmarkt mit Livemusik statt.

Wir haben die Märkte in den Dörfern sehr genossen, vor allem wegen der frischen Dinge, die wir jeden Tag kaufen und essen konnten. Fast jeden Tag sind wir in ein anderes Dorf zum Markttag gefahren, um uns mit Oliven, Tomaten, Melonen, Nektarinen, Kirschen und mehr einzudecken.

Rob and Mumpel were curious what might be in these huge bags. They found all different sorts of herbs in there. Provence herbs, basil, saffron, sage,thyme, rosemary...

Rob und Mumpel waren neugierig, was sie wohl aus diesen riesigen Säcken verkauft wird. Sie fanden darin jede Menge Kräuter. Kräuter der Provence, Basilikum, Safran, Salbei, Thymian, Rosmarin...

Typical house color in south france. The color is made of ocher earth that they have a lot of in the reagion. It contains iron, clay and sand and gives it this nice redbrownish look. I especially like the combination of ocher with the light blue in front of the windows.

Typische Hausfarbe in dieser Region Südfrankreichs, die ein großes Ockervorkommen aufweist. Ocker enthält Eisen, Ton und Sand und gibt dem Putz diesen schönen rotbraunen Look. Ich mochte besonders die Kombination Ockerrot mit den hellblauen Holzläden vor den Fenstern.

Now this was the biggest treat for Rob and Mumpel. They loved the pool and had a blast running and jumping into it. As you can see Mumpel is still wearing her swimmies on this picture but at the end of our time there she was able to swim all by herself and that made her just so proud. She had enough time to learn it and was in the pool every day more than once. In fact, in the beginning she was even a little afraid to go in by herself but watch her now.

Das war natürlich das Grösste für Rob und Mumel. Die zwei fanden den Pool toll und hatten so viel Spass dabei, dort hineinzurennen und zu springen. Wie ihr seht hat Mumpel auf dem Bild noch ihre Schwimmflügel an aber am Ende unserer Zeit in Frankreich hatte sie schwimmen gelernt und sie war ja so stolz auf sich selbst. Sie hatte genug Zeit es zu lernen und war mindestens einmal jeden Tag im Pool. Tatsächlich hatte sie anfangs sogar ein bisschen Angst, allein reinzugehen und jetzt seht sie euch an.

Speaking of southfrance - crickets just belong to the region naturally. What would provence be without the chirring of crickets? Here's one in close capture. If you've never heard the noise these guys can make at night you'd be quite surprised! But for now it sits quietly and comfortable on Mumpel's arm.

Da wir grad von Südfrankreich sprechen - Grillen gehören logischerweise auch dazu.Was wäre die Provence ohne das Zirpen der Grillen? Hier kann man mal eine aus der Nähe beobachten. Falls ihr nie gehört habt, was diese eher kleinen Tiere für einen Lärm machen können, würdet ihr überrascht sein! Aber jetzt sitzt diese hier ganz ruhig und bequem auf Mumpel's Arm.

Aups was the starting point of our visits to different locations of provence so there is more pictures and info to come. As for now let me say I have such good memories on our stay there and we definitely plan on going back there. 

Aups war immer der Ausgangspunkt für unsere Tagesausflüge in der Provence, das heisst also es wird bald mehr Bilder und Info geben. Fürs Erste lasst mich Euch sagen dass ich so gute Erinnerungen an unseren Aufenthalt dort habe und wir definitiv planen, wieder hinzufahren.
