Crab apples and workshop - Zieräpfel und Werkstatt

Ich wünsche Euch - wenn auch etwas verspätet - ein glückliches und vor allem gesundes Jahr 2021!

I wish all of you - although I am a bit late - a happy and healthy 2021!

 

Diese kleinen Zieräpfel haben Thomas und ich vorgestern im Garten gesammelt und zu Dekorationszwecken in ein Glas gefüllt. Jetzt stehen sie auf unserem Couchtisch. Ich finde diese knallroten Äpfel richtig schön und habe mich schon das ganze Jahr über darauf gefreut. Es hängen natürlich auch noch genügend Äpfel für die Gartenvögel am Baum. 

 

Eigentlich waren wir draussen, um Tulpen und Krokusse einzupflanzen. Eigentlich waren wir dafür zu spät dran, denn sie hätten laut Packung bis Ende November in der Erde sein sollen, aber was hilft es schon, wir hoffen, dass das trotzdem noch etwas wird. Einen Teil der Krokusse hatte ich im Oktober schon gepflanzt und sie gucken schon aus der Erde!

 

Thomas and I collected these little beautiful red crab apples from our tree in the garden the day before yesterday. I love the color of them and now we put them into a glas and on our couch table for decoration. I had been waiting for the apples to grow all year since we have the tree and now here they are. There are enough apples left for the birds on the tree.  

 

Actually we were in the garden to plant some tulips and crocuses - they were due to be planted before december but what does it help - although putting them into soil too late we hope we'll see some tulips in spring. In october I already planted some corcuses and I can see them growing already!

Im Garten gab es so viel Neues zu schnuppern, dass sie nachher im Sitzen auf der Couch eingeschlafen ist. Das Bild habe ich gemacht, kurz bevor sie die Augen zumacht und schnarcht. 

The excursion into the garden was obviously so tiring that Cookie fell asleept sitting on the couch afterwards. I took this photo right before she closed her eyes and started to snore.

 

 

 

Die Amaryllis, die ich von meiner Mutter zum Nikolaus bekommen habe, geht langsam auf. 

My mom gave this amaryllis to me for St. Nicholas and it is starting to blossom now. 

 

 

 

Wir haben den Jahreswechsel allein verbracht und ein Feuer in der Feuerschale gemacht. Normalerweise sehen wir die Nachbarn spätestens um kurz vor 12, doch dieses Jahr war niemand da, obwohl ziemlich viele Leute in der entfernteren Nachbarschaft Feuerwerk gemacht haben.

 

We were by ourselves over the change of the years. It was different to the years before when we saw all our neighbours around twelve. Nobody was on the street this year although quite many people in the surrounding area started their fireworks. 

 

 

 

Wir waren auch in der Werkstatt und haben angefangen, dort neue Regale für mehr Staufläche zu bauen und ein bisschen umzugestalten. Zuerst hört es sich nach einem schnell umzusetzenden Plan an und dann dauert es doch Tage. Aber das war lange überfällig, da einfach zu wenig Platz in der Werkstatt war und wir was daran ändern mussten. 

Also we have been to the workshop building new shelves to have more room for storage. It sounded like a plan to be accomplished in a short time but of course like always it took us days. But it was fun and we really needed to change something to getting more space to work in the workshop.

Ansonsten sind wir diese Woche noch gemütlich und gehen alles ruhiger an als sonst. Thomas ist noch zu Hause und hat Urlaub. Wir haben unsere Weihnachtsdekoration auch noch stehen und auch unseren Baum - ganz anders als die letzten Jahre, als ich froh war, alles kurz nach Weihnachten wegräumen zu können. Dieses Wichtelmädchen hat mir meine Mutter zu Weihnachten geschenkt. 

 

We are trying to take it slow this week, Thomas is still at home on vacation. We still have our christmas decoration - its all different to the years before when I was happy to get rid of it right after christmas. See the gnom girl on the left in the picture? It was a present for christmas from my mom. 

 

 

 

Zum Abschluss dieses Posts noch ein Bild, das Mumpel gemalt hat. Schnee haben wir nicht bekommen über Weihnachten, aber das kann einen nicht daran hindern, einen fröhlichen Schneemann zu malen. HABT EINE SCHÖNE WOCHE!

- - Unbezahlte Werbung - - Nach einer Weile mussten wir das Licht anmachen, zwar war es noch nicht dunkel, aber trotzdem war schon um kurz nach vier nicht mehr genug Licht zum Malen da. 

- -  Unpaid advertising - - After a while we had to turn on the lights, it was not actually completely dark but at four in the afternoon still not enough light for drawing anymore.

Ich hänge völlig hinterher, was mein Jahreszeitenbuch angeht. Im Sommer war einfach so viel anderes zu tun, wir waren so viel draußen, dass ich gar nicht wirklich dazu gekommen bin, im Buch weiterzumalen. Das will ich jetzt Schritt für Schritt nachholen, sonst ist der Herbst vorbei und ich stecke immernoch im Frühling. 

I am totally behind concerning the drawings in my seasonal book. There were so many other things to do over summer, mostly outside of course and so I never really got to drawing a whole lot. I will catch up step by step now though, otherwise fall will be over and my seasonal book is still in spring. 

Dieses Bild hatte ich angefangen aber nicht zu Ende gemacht. Jetzt ist alles schriftliche fertig und die Zeichnungen auch bald. Dann kann ich zum Sommer übergehen. Die Krokusse sind aus dem Frühlingsheft von "Vorhang auf!" abgemalt. (Unbezahlte Werbung).

I had started to draw this picture and now finally finished it. Now all the writing for spring is done and the pictures also almost. After completing I can move on to summer. These crocuses I drew from the german childrens' magazine "Vorhang auf!" (Unpaid advertising)

Rob und ich haben einen schönen Ausflug zum Pferdehof gemacht. Vor dem Reiten mussten wir das Pferd aber noch von der Wiese holen und darauf hatte er gar nicht so viel Lust, er war grad so schön am Grasen....

Rob and I were at the stable. Before riding we had to get the horse from the pasture which was not all that easy because he rather wanted to stay there and keep on grazing.... 

 Mit Hilfe einer Möhre konnten wir ihn aber dann doch ganz leicht überzeugen mitzukommen. :-)

With the help of a carot we were easily able to talk him into coming with us though. :-)

Im Moment bei dem schönen Wetter macht es noch richtig Spaß, dort oben Zeit zu verbringen. 

 Heute war es schon richtig heiß aber morgen sollen es über 30 Grad werden. Ein Wahnsinn! Mir würden 25 Grad auch locker reichen. 

Today it was really warm but tomorrow it is supposed to become over 30 degrees Celcius. Unbelievable for September! I'd be happy with only 25 degrees, that's truly enough for me.

Zu Hause habe ich dann die restlichen Tomaten abgeerntet und Kresse und Feldsalat neu ins Beet gepflanzt. 

Back at home I took the tomato plants out and put cress and lamb's lettuce seeds in the box. 

 Jetzt sieht das Beet erstmal ganz leer aus. Nur die letzte Gurke darf noch reifen.

The flower box looks all empty now. Just the last cucumber of the year is still ripening in it.

Der Sommerflieder ist tatsächlich im ersten Jahr so hoch gewachsen, dass man ihn von der Couch aus sehen kann. Im Winter konnte man sich das bei den kleinen Pflänzchen noch gar nicht vorstellen. 

Hitze hin oder her, ich bin ganz froh, dass das Wetter noch so schön ist und wir noch etwas Zeit im Garten verbringen können bevor der Winter kommt. 

Buddleia has indeed grewn so much during this first year that we can see it from the couch. In winter we couldn't even have imagined that much growth. Back then those plants looked so tiny. 

Well, upcoming heat or not - I'm quite happy about the sun because as long as the weather is nice we can still spend time in our garden before winter comes. 

Huskies and kohlrabi - Huskies und Kohlrabi

Mumpel zeichnet im Moment sehr gerne. Sie hat diesen Husky für ihre Freundin gezeichnet, die selbst einen Husky hat. Die Mädchen treffen sich regelmäßig bei den Pferden. Ich versuche derzeit, alle Treffen möglich zu machen, denn ich glaube, dass das Coronavirus im Herbst wieder deutlich mehr vertreten sein wird, als es derzeit ist und man sich dann vielleicht nicht mehr so einfach treffen kann.

Mumpel loves to draw at the moment. She drew this Husky for her friend who actually does have a Husky at home. The girls meet a couple of times a week at the stable. Right now I try to make each and every date possible as I believe that coronavirus will be around much more again from fall on and maybe then it is not possible to meet as easy as it is now.

Mumpel hat mir gesagt, sie möchte anhand der Huskies vor allem das Schattieren lernen.

Mumpel told me she wants to learn drawing shades with this.

Diese Zeichnung erinnert mich ein wenig an Aaron und seinen Blick.

Gestern wollte ich nach den Kohlrabis schauen und habe dabei jede Menge Raupen des Kohlweißlings gefunden und ebenso viele Löcher in sämtlichen Blättern. Wir haben uns also dafür entschieden, die Kohlrabis zu ernten, obwohl sie noch so klein sind. Die Raupen abzusammeln ist kaum gelungen weil es einfach zu viele waren.

Yesterday I wanted to look after my kohlrabi and I found loads of caterpillars of a cabbage butterfly and just as many holes in the leaves. We decided on harvesting the kohlrabi eventhough it is still pretty small. We could have collected them of the plants but there were just way too many of them.

Jetzt haben die Rote Bete mehr Platz.

Ich habe ein paar Samen der Phazelie ausgebracht, die den Boden lockern soll. Diese Pflanze wird hier auch Gründünger genannt und soll lila Blüten haben, lange blühen und jede Menge Bienen anlocken. Wir werden sehen was daraus wird, ich habe sie aus dem Bioladen und vorher noch nie von ihr gehört.

I put in a few seeds of phazelia, which is supposed to loosen the soil. This plant is also called green manure and they have purple blossoms that stay for a rather long time. It is bee nurturing plant so we will see what it turns out to be. This is our first try with phazelia.

Drawings and chickens - Zeichnungen und Hühner

Ich hinke völlig hinterher, was mein Jahreszeitenbuch angeht. Vor lauter Garten und anderen Aktivitäten, sei es von den Kindern, Großeltern oder uns selbst, bin ich kaum dazu gekommen, mich in Ruhe ans Zeichnen und Aufschreiben zu setzen. Ich bin immernoch bei den letzten Frühlingserinnerungen, obwohl längst Sommer ist. Heute soll es den ganzen Tag regnen, heute werde ich mir Zeit nehmen.

I'm totally behind with drawing and writing about our spring memories in my seasonal diary. We had so much to do around the garden or with the grandparents or meeting friends and going to the stable that I haven't found the energy to sit down and draw and write. I am still writing about our spring memories although we already have summer. Today it is supposed to rain all day, today I'll take that time.

Als Vorlage habe ich wieder ein Bild von Daniela Drescher aus dem "Vorhang auf!" Heft genommen (Unbeauftragte Werbung). Wir haben davon jede Menge, die wir mit den Kindern früher gelesen haben.

I took another picture of the artist Daniela Drescher as a template. It is from one of our children's magazines called "Vorhang auf!". We have quite many of them from when our kids were small and we used to read in them.

Für den Hintergrund muss ich mir noch was einfallen lassen.

I need to come up with an idea for the background of the picture.

Am Pferdehof gibt es seit Neuestem Hühnerküken. Mumpel hat sie gezeigt bekommen und hat sicherlich jedes einzelne auf der Hand gehabt. Sie sagt sie sind ganz weich und fluffig. Sie wünscht sich schon länger Hühner und nach dieser Erfahrung am Hof ist der Wunsch natürlich noch größer geworden. Leider geht das hier bei uns nicht. Doch am Hof kann man gut beobachten, wie sie wachsen und was sie so machen.

The stable has little chickens since a couple of days. Mumpel was allowed to have a closer look at them and she took each of them onto her hands to feel that they are all fluffy. She has been wishing for chickens for long now and of course after this experience at the farm her wish has even become stronger. Unfortunately we can't make that possible for her due to our house situation. But at the farm she can always have a look at them and see how they are growing and what they are up to.

Es sind ganz viele Küken in den unterschiedlichsten Farben, aber ich habe nur diese beiden so richtig aufs Bild bekommen.

There are so many of them in all kinds of colors but none of them (except for these two) really wanted to be in a picture.

New drawing project - Neues Malprojekt

Im Moment bin ich regelrecht im Malfieber. Es macht gerade so viel Spaß, kreativ zu sein und ich nutze die Motivation, um an meinem Jahreszeitenbuch zu arbeiten. Dort trage ich Familien-Erinnerungen saisonweise ein und verziere die Seiten mit selbst gemalten Bildern. Als Vorlage nutze ich gern die wunderschönen Bilder von Daniela Drescher (Unbeauftragte Werbung) aus den Kinderbüchern und male sie ab. Ich habe es einfach mal probiert, allerdings zuerst nicht gedacht dass ich es hinbekomme. Ohne Vorlage aus der Phantasie heraus könnte ich das, glaube ich, nicht. Ich brauche die Vorlage.

At the time I am all into drawing. It is so much fun to be creative and I use my motivation to work on my seasonal book in which I write down our family memories and put in my drawings as well. As a sort of template I use the wonderful pictures of Daniela Drescher from her childrens' books (unpaid advertisement) and I draw them. I thought it is worth a try drawing them and see how it works and I actually at the time never thought I could accomplish it.  Without a template I think I couldn't ever do it.

Die Sache mit dem Zeichnen ist die: es klappt nicht immer, zumindest nicht bei mir. Ich muss regelrecht in der Stimmung sein, um die Geduld aufzubringen, genau zu gucken und dann zu zeichnen. Die habe ich nicht immer und dann ist auch leider für Monate nichts möglich und es will nichts rechtes dabei zustande kommen. Doch derzeit geht es sehr gut und ich sitze schon am nächsten Projekt, das ich demnächst fertigstelle und Euch dann zeige.

The thing with drawing is: it doesn't always work out, at least not for me. I have to be in the mood for it and I have to be patient enough to look closely at the template and then draw. I don't always have this patience and if that's not the case drawing doesn't work out for weeks and months. This is the perfect tiime though, I'm motivated and have just started my next project that I'll show you as soon as its done.

Seit kurzem haben wir eine richtige Lounge für unsere kleine Terrrasse. Sowas gemütliches! Das einzige Problem ist: Wohin mit den ganzen Kissen und Sitzauflagen wenn es regnet oder im Winter? Naja, dafür findet sich noch eine Lösung, wir sind jedenfalls bereit für den Frühling und Sommer.

Recently we have a sofa for our porch. So cosy! The only problem is: where to put all the pillows and seat covers when it is raining or during winter? Well, we'll find a solution for that, as for now I can say: we're ready for spring and summer!

Thomas hat uns mit den Kindern zusammen in der Werkstatt eine Eckbank aus dem gleichen Holz gebaut, aus dem wir auch den Zaun gebaut haben. Sie steht nun so, dass man einmal in den hinteren Garten und einmal auf den Brunnen an der Seite gucken kann. Ich mag gerne verschiedene Sitzplätze im Garten haben. Wenn alle Pflanzen einmal größer gewachsen sind, wird der japanische Ahornbaum bis zur Hauswand gehen und wir werden unter ihm auf der Bank sitzen und Eistee trinken können.

Thomas has built us a wooden bench at the workshop with the kids and they made it from the same wood we built our fence from. We put the bench right on the corner of the house. So now we can watch the backyard from it or sit and watch the fountain on the side of the hourse. I love having different  sitting opportunities in the garden. Whenever our plants have grown our japanese maple tree will have reached the house and we will sit under it, maybe having an icetea.

Gleich neben dem Ahorn, vor der Bank im hinteren Garten, steht unser Blumenhartriegel. Er bekommt gerade ganz viele rosa Blüten. Dieser Busch ist übersät mit Blüten. Sie sind zuerst grün und werden nun von außen nach innen pink und verblassen dann, bis sie einen rosa Ton haben. In der Mitte der Blüte wachsen Früchte, die man essen kann. Die Japaner machen daraus Fruchtlikör, vielleicht sollten wir das auch probieren. :-)

Next to the japanese maple tree we planted another japanese plant, a flowering dogwood. It gets dozens of blossoms right now. They turn their color from green into a bright pink which then turns into a lighter pink after a while. In the middle of the blossoms little fruits are growing which we can actually eat. I read that the Japanese make liqueur from it, maybe we should give that a try. :-)

Mit Mumpel war ich schon ein paarmal wieder bei den Pferden. Sie haben alle schon einen Fliegenschutz um, damit sie nicht allzusehr belästigt werden. Hier sieht man Philip das Shetty.

With Mumpel I've visited the horses several times now. They all have their fly masks on already so they won't get bothered too much. On this picture is Philip, he is a Shetty.

Mit Toby haben wir einen Spaziergang gemacht. Mumpel hat ihr eigenes Halfter für ihn mitgebracht und es hat sogar gepasst. Ich glaube ich bin froh, wenn die Kinder wieder zum Hof können denn sie vermissen ihr Hobby doch sehr.

We went for a walk with Toby. Mumpel brought her own noseband for him and it fitted him, we didn't think so we thought it might be too small. I think I'm happy when the kids can go back to the stable again to do their lessons. They miss riding and seeing the horses and their friends pretty much.

Winter memories - Winter Erinnerungen

Diese Woche geht es bei uns noch ruhig zu und deshalb bin ich auch - genau wie über Weihnachten - immer wieder mal dazu gekommen, an meinem Jahreszeitenbuch zu arbeiten. Ich habe mir vorgenommen, das Jahr über wirklich dran zu bleiben denn ich finde, es gibt nichts besseres, um sich zwischendurch zu erden, als sich mit etwas kreativem zu beschäftigen. 

After christmas vacation we are starting every-day life slowly and so I do find the time to work on my seasonal book more often than usually. I plan to really accomplish a whole year of drawing and writing a sort of diary into this seasonal book because I find there is no better way of grounding oneself than doing something creative.

Malen hat eine beruhigende Wirkung auf mich, kennt Ihr das auch? Allerdings muss ich auch dafür in der Stimmung sein. An manchen Tagen will einfach nichts klappen und dann lasse ich es lieber. Im Moment bin ich aber gern und mit Spaß dabei. 

Drawing has sort of a soothing effect on me, do you know what I mean, do you feel similar? But I have to be in the right mood for drawing. Some days it just doesn't want to work and nothing turns out the way I wanted. Thats the moment to put the drawing materials aside for some days. At the moment its much fun though. 

 

 

 Rob zeichnet auch viel, er beschäftigt sich mit seinem neuen Zeichenbuch über Pferde und hat dieses Pferd mit Hilfe einer Anleitung gezeichnet und schattiert. 

 Rob does a lot of drawing as well. He got a new book of how to draw horses and this is his first try. 

 Morgens im Dunkeln nur mit Kerzenschein wirft der Wichtel unheimliche Schatten. :-)

Early in the mornings when its still dark outside and only candles give light, the imp throws spooky shadows. :-)

 

Wir haben den Weihnachtsbaum schon rausgeschmissen und dieses Jahr bin ich ein bisschen traurig darüber, es war eigentlich noch so gemütlich. Doch er war nur noch eine Trauergestalt mit immer weniger Nadeln. Dafür steht jetzt Willi Wichtel in der Ecke, zusammen mit meinen Apfelzweigen mit Kugeln drin und einer Laterne. 

We already got rid of our tree and I have to admit that this year I'm a little sad about that, we are still all feeling cosy and it just doesn't look as cosy without the tree. But it had to be thrown out as it was loosing all of its needles and looked rather sadly. So now there is Willi imp standing in the tree corner together with a lantern and my apple trees which I have decorated.

 Übrigens blühen die Apfelblüten endlich!!
