Winterzeit in Belgien

Hallo Ihr lieben Blogleser, 

ja, wir sind noch da. Ich habe schon so lange nichts mehr geschrieben weil wir mit so vielen Dingen beschäftigt waren und es einfach irgendwie nicht reingepasst hat. Doch nun möchten wir Dich gerne wieder wissen lassen, wie es uns ergeht und wie unsere Winterzeit aussieht. Ich werde jetzt wieder regelmäßiger schreiben.

Dear Readers,

yes, we are still here. I haven't been writing this blog for so long now. We have been so busy in our lives and it never seemed to fit in. But now I'd like to let you all know how we are all doing and how we fill our wintertime. I will write more regularly now again.

Have I ever before posted a picture from us on this blog?

Wir leben immernoch in Belgien und unsere Kinder sind derzeit immernoch im Hausunterricht. Wir haben in den letzten Wochen und Monaten ganz schön viel Schnee gehabt! Sieht das nicht toll aus? Ich liebe den Winter wenn es schneit. Nicht so toll finden wir natürlich Regen und diesiges Wetter. Aber diese traumhafte Winterlandschaft hat uns natürlich motiviert, viel rauszugehen und lange Spaziergänge in der Natur zu machen. 

We are still living in Belgium and our kids are still doing homeschooling at the time. During the last weeks and months we've had loads of snow. Doesn't this look fantastic? I love winter when we have snow. Rainy and drousy days of course are not really a highlight. But this idyllic winter scene has motivated us to go for long walks in nature. 

Kurz vor Weihnachten haben Robin und Ronja glutenfreie Plätzchen gebacken und sich total gefreut, dass das geklappt hat. Es ist nämlich gar nicht so einfach, mit ungewohnten Mehlalternativen zu backen. Da muss man schon wissen, wie man mit der anderen Konsistenz des Teiges umgeht. Aber es hat super geklappt und war auch wirklich lecker! 

Shortly before christmas our kids Robin and Ronja baked glutenfree cookies and were so happy when it really worked out! It's not all that easy to work with alternative flour such as buckeye flour or buckwheat flour. Those flours have a whole different texture and you have to find out how to work with them properly. But it worked out just fine and tasted really yummy!

Vor einigen Monaten haben wir in Aachen ein tolles neues Restaurant gefunden, das auch vegetarische und vegane Speisen serviert. Das "Parsley and Fruits" ist seitdem eins unserer Lieblings-Restaurants. Dort gibt es ganz tolle und ausgefallene Salatkombinationen, die wir besonders gerne mögen. Ich habe vorher noch nie Rucola-Salat mit Bohnen, Oliven, Thymian und Zwiebeln gegessen oder Couscous-Salat mit Tomaten, Granatapfelkernen und Mango. Wenn Ihr mal in Aachen seid, müsst Ihr hier unbedingt hin!

A couple of months ago we found a great restaurant in Aachen which serves normal, vegetarian and vegan dishes. The "Parsley and Fruits" has become one of our favorite restaurants. They have great fancy salads on their menue, which we really appreciate. I have never before eaten a rocket salad with beans, olives, thyme and onions or a couscous salad with tomatoes, pomegranate and mano. If you ever come to Aachen you have to come here!

 Unsere kleine Vogelfutterstation wird auch diesen Winter gut besucht. Mittlerweile überwächst das Häuschen ziemlich aber gerade das finden wir schön. Vor einigen Jahren haben die Kinder das Holzhäuschen mal gebaut.

Our bird feeding house is being well visited this year. And its being overgrown by ivy which we think is really beautiful. Some years ago the kids built it.

 Tommy bereitet mit den Kindern Maronen zu. Das muss sein - jeden Winter wieder. Die Kinder nennen ihn schon ihren Maronimann. 

Tommy is preparing chestnuts with Robin and Ronja. That's a must each winter season. 

Das sind unsere Bücher, die wir über Weihnachten gelesen haben. Die Weihnachtsgeschichte von Charles Dickens lesen wir jedes Jahr. Pole Poppenspäler ist eins von Ronjas Lieblingsbüchern. Ich habe Ende letzten Jahres endlich wieder mit Yoga begonnen, das ich versuche, jeden Morgen zu machen. Kennt von Euch jemand Wolf-Dieter Storl? Seine Bücher finde ich ganz toll. In diesem Buch erklärt er sehr anschaulich den kulturanthropologischen Hintergrund von Märchen und alten heidnischen Bräuchen und Pflanzen und ihren Heilkräften,die in den Märchen vorkommen.

These are the books we read around christmas. We read Charles Dickens Christmas Carol really every year. Ronja wanted to read "Pole Poppenspäler" from Theodor Storm, one of her favorite books. I started with my Yoga practice at the end of last year again. Do any of you know the german author Wolf-Dieter Storl? I love his books. In this book he explains the cultural and anthropological background of common myths and fairy tales, also pagan customs and healing powers of different plants occuring in the myths.
 

Noch ein Winterbild. Wir haben viele Eintöpfe gemacht diesen Winter. Hier gibt es gerade leckeren Kürbiseintopf mit Linsen und Kartoffeln. Wenn es kalt ist muss man was Warmes zu sich nehmen das hat schon meine Oma gesagt. :-) Aaron ist auch noch bei uns. Er wird im April schon 12 Jahre alt! Wir hoffen dass er noch eine ganze Weile bei uns bleibt. Wir merken schon dass er immer langsamer wird und die Kinder sorgen sich schon ein wenig um ihn. Doch ansonsten ist er fit und fröhlich!

Another winter photo. We have been eating a lot of one-pot-dishes this winter. On the photo we are just preparing a pumpkin meal with lentils and potatoes. If it is cold outside one needs something warm to eat my grandma used to say.:-) Aaron our newfoundland is also still with us. He will turn 12 years in april. He is getting slower when walking. We hope he will stay for quite some time with us. The kids are a little worried because he walks so slow but other than that he is fit and cheery.

Cathedral of Aachen - Aachener Dom

Together with other home educators from Belgium we met last saturday to do a guided tour through the cathedral of the german city of Aachen. We started in the information house of the dome, where we met our guide and found this beautiful model of the cathedral. This is what it looks like nowadays. When Charlemagne built it back in the late eighth century it included not much more than the octagon that you see in the middle. Most of the other buildings were built long after Charlemagnes time. 

Letzte Woche Samstag haben wir mit anderen Homeschoolern aus Belgien eine Führung durch den Aachener Dom gemacht. Wir haben im Haus der Dominfo angefangen, wo wir dieses schöne Modell gefunden haben. So sieht der Aachener Dom heute aus. Früher, als Karl der Große ihn bauen liess, gab es nur das Oktogon in der Mitte. Die Meisten anderen Gebäude wurden erst später dazugebaut.

Our guide took us to the treasure chamber first. We found this bust of Charlemagne and other relics that contain bones of him. 

Als Erstes sind wir in der Schatzkammer gewesen, wo uns diese vergoldete Büste Karls des Großen gezeigt wurde, genau wie einige andere Reliquien, die Knochen von ihm enthalten.

An ancient bible exemplar. Back in former times books like the bible were written by hand. Each copy was written by a scribe and embellished with drawings by illustrators. Only rich and well-educated people were able to read and write and bibles were written in latin. Each copy was one of a kind.

Churches had paintings like these for the people who weren't able to read. This is a painting which hung behind the altar of the cathedral was given to it as a gift by a monk. You can even see him in the front left corner of the middle picture. He had a painter draw him into the picture so everyone would know that he was the one who gave this painting to the dome of Aachen. There is quite a story behind the three paintings, which people were able to "read".

Früher gab es oft Gemälde in den Kirchen für die Menschen, die nicht lesen konnten. Diese Menschen haben quasi die Bilder "gelesen". Dies hier ist ein Gemälde, das dem Dom zu Aachen von einem Mönch geschenkt wurde. Man sieht diesen Mönch sogar vorne links im mittleren Bild, wo er sich nachträglich hat hereinmalen lassen, um sich als derjenige, der das Bild gestiftet hat, zu verewigen.

 

Jesus has been sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate. On the stairs, our guide explained, is a child with Down's Syndrome which is tied to a monkey. The painter wants people to know that the world must have gone crazy to sentence Jesus to death. 

Man sieht auf dem Bild, dass Jesus von Pontius Pilatus zum Tode verurteilt wurde. Auf den Treppen, so erklärte uns unser Domführer, sitzt ein Kind mit Downsyndrom, das an einen Affen gekettet ist. Der Maler will den Menschen mitteilen, dass die Welt verrückt gewesen sein muss, Jesus zum Tode zu verurteilen. 

Here you can see the monk who gave the painting as a gift. He wears a white cape. Mary is painted in a dark blue coat with a halo over her head like many saints were at the time. 

Hier sieht man den Mönch, der das Gemälde geschenkt hat. Er trägt einen weissen Umhang. Maria ist in einen dunkelblauen Mantel gehüllt, diese Farbe wurde für viele Heilige zu dieser Zeit benutzt. Sie ist mit Heiligenschein gemalt. 

This spring stands in the atrium. Today the building on the picture is used by the "Domsingschule" of Aachen, a catholic school with attention to singing. The atrium is the school's schoolyard.

Dieser schöne Brunnen steht im Innenhof. Das Gebäude im Hintergrund wird heute von der "Domsingschule" Aachens genutzt. Der Innenhof ist der Schulhof.

Einschusslöcher aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Zum Glück wurde der Kaiserdom nur geringfügig beschädigt. 

This is inside the octagon. The huge chandelier was given as a present by King Frederick Barbarossa during the 12th century. He admired Charlemagne and the cathedral he built very much and this was the reason to give this chandelier as a present.

This is the king's chair. Only Charlemagne was allowed to sit here. This chair was used for the emperors to be crowned. Also it is located on the first floor. Charlemagne wanted people to know that he felt above the regular people who - during mass - sat downstairs. Only Christ was above him. A painting of Christ is painted on the ceiling of the cathedral and shows his superiority over Charlemagne.

Das ist der Königsstuhl. Nur Karl der Grosse bzw. die Kaiser durften hier sitzen. Er wurde als Krönungsstuhl genutzt. Der Stuhl steht im ersten Stock. Dadurch konnte Karl der Grosse zeigen, dass er sich dem normalen Volk überlegen fühlte. Nur Christus stand über ihm. Ein Gemälde von Christus befindet sich an der Decke des Doms.

We've had a very interesting guidance through the cathedral and the treasure chamber. The tour took us over 2 1/2 hours and still most of the kids didn't get tired of hearing all the stories about Charlemagne and the other kings. Despite the long tour there are so many more infos about this building that we are thinking about going again in a couple of months. Until then we will be reading the Cathedral book for children. It explains the history very well.

Wir hatten, dank unseres Museumsführers eine tolle Tour durch Dom und Schatzkammer. Über zweieinhalb Stunden lang waren wir unterwegs und fast keins der Kinder ist müde oder gelangweilt gewesen von den tollen Geschichten zu Karl dem Grossen und den anderen Königen. Trotz der langen Führung gibt es immernoch so viel mehr Info über den Dom, dass wir überlegen, in ein paar Monaten nochmal zu gehen. Bis dahin lesen wir "Das Kinderdombuch", das die Geschichte wirklich toll erklärt.

The castle in Stolberg has a little museum actually it is in the archway of the castle. It shows old machines and gives an impression on what life and work was like in former times. Machines were on their way into everyday life as industialization moved on and we saw quite a few of them in this museum. I took some pictures for you to see.

Im Torbogen der Burg Stolberg gibt es ein kleines Museum. Es zeigt alte Maschinen und gibt einen Einblick in das Leben und Arbeiten, wie es früher war. Mehr und mehr Maschinen wurden gebaut während die Industrialisierung fortschritt. Ich habe ein paar Bilder aus dem Museum für Euch zusammengestellt.

A collection of flat irons, the one on the right was so heavy we could hardly even lift it. Mumpel asked me how people had worked with it being so heavy.

Eine Sammlung von Bügeleisen, das auf der rechten Seite war so schwer, dass man es kaum hochheben konnte. Mumpel hat mich gefragt, wie die Leute früher damit arbeiten konnten.

With the machine on the upper picture they pressed the soap into little forms. They showed many soaps shaped like little bears or ducks or dolls for children.

Mit der Machine aus dem oberen Bild wurde die Seite in kleine Formen gepresst. Die Ausstellung zeigte auch niedliche kleine Bären-, Enten- oder Puppenseifen für Kinder.

 This is what it looked like in a school around 1900

So sah es früher in der Schule aus

Schoollife was hard, the teacher had strict rules for the pupils and if they acted without respect they had detention or had to stand in a corner of the room or were even hit with a cane. The sign below shows a sample of the old german way to write. The letters all looked so differently. I remember my grandma teaching this to me when I was about 12. 

Das Schulleben war hart, es gab strenge Regeln, an die sich die Schüler halten mussten. Taten sie das nicht, so mussten sie tun was auf dem Schild steht. Das untere Schild zeigt Geschriebens in Altdeutscher Schrift. Die Buchstaben sehen alle so anders aus. Ich erinnere mich, dass meine Oma mir diese Art zu schreiben beigebracht hat, als ich ungefähr 12 war.

Mumpel hat mir im Anschluss an den Besuch gesagt, was sie sich zum Geburtstag wünscht. Sie möchte gern einen Trödelmarkt besuchen und eins dieser alten Telefone haben. :-)
