Cloudy autumn sky and deer - Wolkiger Herbsthimmel und Hirsche

Zum ersten Mal in diesem Jahr haben wir einen Ausflug zu den Hirschen gemacht. Jedes Jahr zur Brunftzeit kommen Scharen von Rehen und Hirschen auf diese Lichtung. Normalerweise ist es erst Mitte/ Ende September so weit, doch Rob wollte unbedingt gucken, ob schon was los ist. Es waren tatsächlich jede Menge dort, sie tummeln sich ganz am Ende der Lichtung Richtung Wald. Um gute Fotos zu machen waren sie zu weit weg, doch durch die Ferngläser konnte man sie prima beobachten. Die Wiese ist vorne übersät mit Löwenmäulchen, das sah sehr schön aus.

For the first time this year we went to see the deer. Each year they during fall they come to this clearing for a couple of weeks and there are always hundreds of them. Usually they don't appear before the end of september but Rob really wanted to see if they are already there and they were! They are all down the clearing close to the forest, too far away to take good photos but with our binoculars we were able to watch them perfectly. In the front the meadow is strewn with yellow snapdragon, which looked very nice. 

 

Auf dem Weg zur Lichtung. Wir hatten wieder Glück mit dem Wetter, eigentlich sollte es regnen, doch hier oben in der Eifel schien noch die Sonne. Jede Menge toller Wolkenformationen haben den Himmel bedeckt. Es wird Herbst, man kann es deutlich spüren. Dieses Wetter, kühler aber mit Sonne , blauem Himmel und Wolken, gefällt mir immer sehr gut. 

On our way towards the clearing. We were lucky as we had the perfect weather. Actually it was supposed to rain but here in the area of the Eifel it was just beautiful. We saw all kinds of beautiful cloud formations in the sky. Fall is coming, we can feel it. This cooler weather with sun and clouds and blue skies - I just love it. 

 

 Durch die Kamera mit dem großen Teleobjektiv kann man die Hirsche mit ihren riesigen Geweihen in der Sonne liegen sehen. 

Through the camera with its lens we could see the deer with their huge antlers lying in the sun. 

 

 

Ich habe versucht, mit meiner Handykamera ein Foto durch das Fernglas hindurch zu machen. Das kann natürlich nicht wirklich scharf werden, aber ich wollte zumindest zeigen, dass die Tiere tatsächlich schon da sind. :-) In den nächsten Wochen wird diese Lichtung unser regelmäßiges Ausflugsziel werden, dann macht Rob mir noch ein paar bessere Bilder wenn sie näher rangekommen sind.

I wanted to show that the deer are really there though. :-) We will head up there on a regular basis during the next couple of weeks and whenever they all came a bit closer Rob will take a more sharp photo for me.

Dieser Ausflug kam am Samstag genau richtig, nachdem ich den Samstag über krank im Bett verbracht habe. Schlimmste Kopfschmerzen mit Erbrechen, ich denke es muss die erste Migräneattacke meines Lebens gewesen sein und ich kann das absolut nicht weiterempfehlen. Jedenfalls war ich heilfroh und dankbar, als der Spuk am Sonntag wieder vorbei war und ich mich wieder bewegen konnte. 

This nice little trip came just at the right time after I was sick in bed all saturday, the day before. I had the worst headache ever with throwing up I guess it must have been the first migraine of my life and I can absolutely not recommend it! Anyways, I was so happy and grateful to be able to move again on sunday. 

Inuit and harvest - Inuit und Ernte

Wir sind immernoch bei den Wikingern, bzw. von dort aus auf die Inuit gekommen. Eigentlich wollten wir mit den Wikingern schon längst fertig sein und zum Mittelalter übergehen, doch das Thema hat uns so viel Spaß gemacht und ich habe diese Bücher passend zum Thema noch gefunden, also lesen wir noch etwas länger darüber. Das Mittelalter läuft ja nicht weg. 

We are still reading about the vikings and also about the Inuit. Actually we wanted to be through with vikings and greenland residentsby now. We thought we could already move on the middle ages but we had so much fun reading about inuit and vikings and I found some more interesting books so we read some more about all of it. I suppose the middle ages will wait for two more weeks.

Nach "Ein Schiff nach Grönland" von Ingeborg Engelhardt lesen wir jetzt dieses Buch über das Leben der Kinder der Baffin Insel in Kanada. Es gefällt uns bisher gut, veranschaulicht das tägliche Leben der Inuit, ihren Kampf im Überleben im Eis, ihre Kultur, Nahrungssuche und vielem mehr. Es ist in teils spannenden, teils lustigen einzelnen Geschichten geschrieben. 

After reading "A ship to greenland" from Ingeborg Engelhardt we now read a biographic story about life of the children of the Baffin Island in Canada. We like the stories about the Inuits' daily life, their culture, their struggle with the hard life in the ice and their ways of finding food and hunting a lot. It is written in partly funny and partly serious rather short stories of an Inuit child.

Einen Gedanken möchte ich hier teilen: das Buch von Ingeborg Engelhardt hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Ich habe daraufhin nachgeschaut, ob ich noch weitere Bücher von ihr kaufen kann, doch das geht schlecht, weil sie nicht mehr verlegt wird. Man kann sie höchstens über Antiquariate kaufen. Ich verstehe nicht, warum so gut geschriebene, interessante und in spannende Geschichten eingebettete Geschichtsbücher einfach nicht mehr verlegt werden. Natürlich ist das Buch schon alt, aber man hätte es doch einfach neu auflegen und den Einband moderner gestalten können. Die Geschichte ist einfach gut und auch noch eine wahre Geschichte der Wikinger auf Grönland. Mir ist das schon ein paarmal aufgefallen, dass ältere Autoren nicht mehr neu aufgelegt werden. Doch viele (natürlich nicht alle) neue Bücher haben einfach gefühlt viel weniger Inhalt als die älteren Bücher, die auch noch sprachlich vielleicht etwas mehr Wortschatz verlangen als viele Bücher von heute. 

Wie auch immer - wir haben uns zwei weitere ihrer Bücher rausgesucht. Eins konnte man neu kaufen, das andere bestellen wir gebraucht. Passend zum Mittelalter geht es dann einmal um Hexenprozesse und einmal um Barbarossa. 

I would like to share one thought here: The last book we read "A ship to greenland" we all liked so much that I tried to get some other books of the same author. I found that that is not as easy to accomplish as I thought because her books are not being published anymore. Maybe antiquarian bookshops have them. I find it such a pity that older but very interestingly written books with embedded history are not published anymore. Of course this book is an old book but in my opinion it could have been easily printed with a modern cover. The story of the vikings of greenland is simply good and a true story as well. I noticed that this happens with quite many older authors or books. But many (of course not all) of the new books often appear to have not as much content as older books and also the speech in them is often much simpler and therefore to me a bit boring. 

However - we will order two more books from I. Engelhardt, one is about the witch trials and the other one about King Barbarossa, so it will fit in our subject of the middle ages perfectly. 

 Beim Handarbeiten muss Cookie natürlich dabei sein.

Morgen gibt es Kürbissuppe aus unserem ersten selbstgezogenen Kürbis.

Our first home grown hokkaido is ready and we will have soup from it tomorrow.

Roses - Rosen

Gestern hatte meine Freundin Geburtstag und ich habe ihr einen großen Strauss Rosen in verschiedenen Größen mit Hortensie dazwischen geholt. Weil der Strauss so groß geworden ist, habe ich für mich noch zwei kleine Rosensträusschen von der Verkäuferin auf dem Rosenhof mitbekommen. Darüber hab ich mich gefreut, ich habe sie in zwei Vasen auf Couchtisch und Esstisch gestellt. Das war doch ein nettes Geschenk zum Geschenk. 

It was my friend's birthday yesterday and I bought a big bunch of roses of different sizes with a hydrangea for her. Because it was such a big bunch the woman in the shop gave me two little bunches of roses as a present. What a nice surprise for my home, I put one on our dinner table and the other one onto the couch table. So I got a present with the present.

 Zusätzlich hatte Thomas einen Tag vorher im Garten noch Blüten unserer eigenen Rosen abgemacht und zum Essen in die Vase gestellt. Über fehlende Blumensträuße kann ich mich derzeit nun wirklich nicht beschweren. 

Additionally Thomas brought some flowers from our garden the day before and put them on the table for dinner so I guess I can't really complain about never getting flowers at the time. 

Wir bereiten den Tisch für das Essen vor. Thomas und ich haben am Sonntag zusammen gekocht, es gab einen neuen Kartoffelsalat mit Curry, Zwiebeln, Schnittlauch und einer Sauce aus Brühe, Apfelessig und Apfelsaft. Zusätzlich wurden Apfelstücke in den Salat geschnibbelt. Der Salat war sehr fruchtig und lecker.  

Preparing the table for dinner. Thomas and I tried a new recipe for a potatoe salad with curry, onions, chives and a sauce made from broth, apple vinegar and apple juice. Also we put little slices of apples into it and it tasted really good and fruity. 

Am Sonntag waren wir wieder im Lieblingswald spazieren. Der Wald hat auch noch schöne Ecken, in denen der Borkenkäfer noch nicht so sehr sein Unwesen getrieben hat, jedoch sieht man vielen Bäumen schon an, dass sie gefällt werden müssen. Noch ist es aber nicht so weit und deshalb können wir ihn noch als Ausflugsziel nutzen. 

Went for a walk again in our favorite forest. It still has its nice parts to walk in where the bark beetle has not been yet to eat all the spruces. But we could still see which trees will be taken down in the near future. Anyhow, at the time it is still nice to take walks in there so we did.

 Wir waren im Park spazieren und sind anschließend auf eine Limo eingekehrt. 

We went for a walk and had something to drink before leaving. 

 

Lemon balm pesto - Zitronenmelisse-Pesto

Im Vorgarten wuchert die Zitronenmelisse und fängt an zu blühen. Ich weiß, dass ich demnächst überall Zitronenmelisse haben werden, wenn ich die Triebe nicht einkürze und genau das haben wir gemacht, damit sie nicht überhand nimmt und sich aussät wie verrückt. Aus einem großen Teil habe ich Pesto gemacht. 

Our lemon balm is growing and starting to flower. I know that it will be starting to take over the front garden once it is blooming and then I will have lemon balm everywhere. To avoid that I cut it down and from most of it I made pesto. 

Für das Pesto habe ich zwei große Handvoll Blätter Zitronenmelisse und Basilikum genommen, eine große Knoblauchzehe, Olivenöl, Zitrone, ein wenig Senf und Mandeln und Salz und alles mit dem Pürierstab gemixt. 

I took two hands full of lemon balm and the same amount of basil and mixed it with garlic, olive oil, lemon, a bit of moustard and some almonds. 

Dazu gab es Wurzelbrot vom Bioladen, das hier alle sehr gerne mögen. Ich habe diesmal welches mit Oliven, eins mit Tomaten und zwei Wurzelbrote mit Walnüssen mitgebracht.

With the pesto we had twisted bread from the organic shop that we all like very much. We had one with olives in it, one with tomatoes and two with walnuts in it. 

 

 Dazu gab es Tomaten-Paprika-Salat mit Schnittlauch, alles aus unserem Garten.

Dieses Buch habe ich am Wochenende gelesen, es hat mir gut gefallen, es geht um eine Familiengeschichte im Land der Apfelbäume im Norden neben Hamburg. 

I read this book over the weekend, it was pretty good, it's about different generations of a northern german family.

Im Garten haben wir doch tatsächlich neue Himbeeren gefunden. Ich dachte, die Himbeerzeit sei längst vorbei aber offensichtlich gibt es eine zweite Ernte. 

We found new raspberries - I didn't know that they flower twice a year but obviously they do.
