Sunday at the workshop - Sonntag in der Werkstatt

Den Sonntag haben wir zusammen in der Werkstatt verbracht und Vogelfutterstation und Insektenhotel wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen. Dafür habe ich das grüne Häuschen abgeschliffen, damit wir es neu streichen konnten. 

We all spent our sunday in the workshop to restore our bird feeding house and the insect hotel. I sanded the house so we could paint it over. 

So sieht es jetzt aus. Vorher war es in tannengrün gestrichen, doch davon war keine Farbe mehr da, also ist es jetzt mossgrün. 

This is what it looks like now. We had painted it in a color called pine green before but we didn't have any of that color left so now it is painted in moss green.

Das ist unser Insektenhotel, das Rob mit Thomas zusammen vor einigen Jahren gebaut hat. In der Mitte haben sie einen Meisenkasten eingesetzt und auf dem Schild am Meisenkasten stand immer: "Übernachtung mit Frühstück". Das müssen wir noch mit Edding wieder drauf schreiben. 

This is our insect hotel. Rob and Thomas built it together a couple of years ago. They put a tit box in the middle of it and on the wooden sign underneath the box it used to say: "Overnight stay with breakfast". I think we'll write that onto the sign again. 

 Mumpels Meisenkasten haben wir auch geschliffen und im Farbton Eiche neu gestrichen. 

We also sanded Mumpel's tit box and painted it with a color called oak. 

 Cookie war auch dabei und hat es sich vor dem Kamin bequem gemacht. Was für ein Glück, dass wir den Kamin in der Werkstatt haben, sonst wäre es wirklich kalt dort im Winter.

Cookie was with us and stayed in front of the fireplace. Lucky us to have this fireplace in the workshop, else it would be so very cold in there during winter. 

Thomas hat das Spatzenhaus fertig gebaut. Es hat drei Eingänge, also auch drei Türen. Alles ist so gebaut, dass man es leicht öffnen und reinigen kann. Spatzen wollen zu mehreren zusammen wohnen. Wir haben immer einige im Garten gehabt. Ich hoffe, nach dem ganzen Gartenumbau kommen bald wieder die Spatzen zurück. 

Thomas completed the sparrow bird house. It has three doors so we can open them easily and clean the box. Sparrows want to live in families and this box is for three families. We have always had sparrows in our garden but after redoing the whole garden they have gone. I hope they will find the box and come back soon.

Zur Belohnung für die Sonntagsarbeit haben wir noch ein leckeres Tiramisu beim Italiener um die Ecke gegessen.

Charles Dickens

 Die Griechen haben wir endlich so gut wie beendet, nachdem wir noch gelesen haben, was Alexander der Große alles so gemacht und erobert hat. Als letzte Amtshandlung werden wir noch unsere große Zeittafel mit verschiedenen griechischen Eckdaten versehen, aber das machen wir nebenbei.

We are, after a pretty long time, almost done with our studies about ancient greece. Last thing we read about was Alexander the Great and what he did and which parts of the world he conquered. The last thing left to do for this subject is to put down key data onto our timetable, but we'll do that additionally to our new project. 

Gestern haben wir mit "Oliver Twist" angefangen. Nach der langen Geschichtsepoche brauchen wir mal was anderes, bevor wir mit den Römern anfangen. Das Buch lesen wir zusammen laut. Ich finde es immer gut, sich mit mehreren Werken eines Autors zu beschäftigen, um sich genauer einfinden zu können in seinen Schreibstil und die Zeit, in der die Bücher geschrieben wurden. 

Yesterday we've started to read "Oliver Twist". After a long time of studying history we need something different to read before starting with the romans. We are reading this book out loudly. I like to read different books of one author at one time to take a closer look at his way of writing and the time he lived and wrote his books. 

 Beim Lesen kann man immer einen Hund gebrauchen :-)

Die Weihnachtsgeschichte von Dickens haben wir erst kurz nach Weihnachten gelesen und besprochen weil wir in der Adventszeit einfach sooo viele Weihnachtsgeschichten zu lesen hatten, dass wir nicht dazu gekommen sind. So passt es aber jetzt ganz gut in die Charles Dickens Epoche. Diese Ausgabe der Weihnachtsgeschichte gefällt uns gut weil sie reich bebildert ist und ganz viele Erklärungen über das London und die Umstände der damaligen Zeit enthält.

Shortly after christmas we read "A christmas carol". We just plainly didn't get to read it before christmas because we had so very many advent books to read anyhow. But this way it fits in perfectly into studying Charles Dickens. We like this edition of the christmas carol a lot because it has a lot of pictures as well as explainations about London of former times in it.

Als Nachtisch für das Mittagessen habe ich mit Mumpel zusammen Apple crumble gemacht, wovon naturgemäß nicht mehr viel übrig ist. :-)

As a desert for lunch Mumpel and I made apple crumble. As always, not much is left over. :-)

Winter garden and bird house - Wintergarten und Vogelhaus

Unser Morgen fängt derzeit immer mit einem frisch gepressten Orangensaft an. Wir haben eine große Kiste voll Orangen von einem Kunden bekommen. Das ist zu einer ganz netten Tradition geworden. Jedes Jahr verschenkt dieser Kunde große Apfelsinenkisten und jedes Jahr warten die Kinder schon darauf. Dieses Jahr ist er spät dran gewesen - oder früh, wie man es nimmt. 

Every morning starts with a fresh orange juice at our house at the time. We received a big box of oranges from one of Thomas` clients. This has become a nice tradition actually. Each year this client gives us a big box of oranges for the work Thomas has done and each year the kids are already waiting for the box. Usually he gives it to us before christmas but now we got it last week.

Der Winter hat uns schließlich doch noch eingeholt. Zwischendurch dachten wir es wird schon Frühling aber jetzt ist es richtig kalt, an die null Grad. Mein Sommerflieder ist mit einer dünnen Eisschicht bedeckt. 

Winter finally got us. For a while it looked like we'd skip winter and move right on to spring but now it is so cold outside. My buddleia has a thin icecap on its leaves.

Die Vogelfutterstation friert so langsam auch zu. Die Piepmätze sind schon wieder zurück im Garten aber ich habe mir sagen lassen, dass es doch recht lange dauert, bis sie diese Futterstellen annehmen. Bislang habe ich noch keinen Vogel an der Station gesehen. Haben sie die Stelle erstmal als Futterstelle gespeichert, sind sie Gewohnheitstiere, die immer wieder dorthin zurückkehren. Na, ich bin gespannt ob das noch was wird. Zumindestens höre ich sie immer morgens, sie sind also da.

The birds are back in the garden, I can hear them in the early mornings but someone told me that it takes quite some time before they accept a feeding station. Once they do accept it though they will always come back there. Well, I guess I'll see how long it will take them. 

In den nächsten Tagen werden wir ganz schön etwas zu tun haben. Gestern wurden drei Tonnen Lavaschotter geliefert, die wir um die Beete kippen müssen, damit nicht sofort das Unkraut durchbricht. Wir haben das in den Weihnachtsferien schon einmal gemacht und es war ganz schön anstrengend, alles in die Schubkarre zu schaufeln und dann im Beet zu verteilen. Ich hatte ziemlichen Muskelkater im Anschluss, trotzdem hat es Spaß gemacht. 

Here is what we will have to do during the next days: we will have to bring this lava gravel into our flower beds to prevent them from being overwhelmed with weed in spring. Yesterday we got three tons of this lava and it is in our driveway now and of course can't stay there. We did it before, during our christmas vacation and I can say it's a pretty exhausting job to shovel three tons of it into the garden. I had pretty sore muscles a day later but on the other hand it was a fun activity.

Ich habe diese Zeitschrift zu Hause liegen, eine meiner Lieblingszeitschriften. Darin sind in diesem Monat Anleitungen zum Bau von Vogelhäusern zu finden. Wir haben schon damit angefangen, unten sieht man unser erstes Vogelhaus. 

This is one of my favorite magazines and this time they have instructions for building bird nesting facilities in it. We have already started to build them, on a picture below you can see our bird house.

Meisenkästen haben wir schonmal gebaut als die Kinder noch viel kleiner waren. Diesmal möchte ich gerne auch ein Spatzenhaus haben und ein Haus für Rotschwänze. Für alle Vogelarten muss man die Öffnungen unterschiedlich groß machen und Spatzen sind so gesellig, dass sie am liebsten in Reihenhäusern zu mehreren wohnen. 

We did tit boxes before when the kids were much younger. This time I'd like to build a home for sparrows and redstarts as well. The hole has to be of a different size for each species and sparrows are very sociable birds so they like to live with a couple of families in row houses. 

 

Mit einem Meisenkasten haben wir angefangen. Mumpel hat mit Thomas zusammen extra noch ein kleines Stück Holz mit Öffnung vor den eigentlichen Kasten gebaut, damit Katzen nicht mit der Pfote um die Ecke greifen können. Der Kasten muss jetzt noch mit einer Biofarbe gestrichen werden und dann können wir ihn aufhängen. 

We started the project with another tit box and Mumpel and Thomas put an extra piece of wood with a hole in it in front of the actual box so that cats cannot reach around the corner to grab the babies with their arms. Now we'll have to paint it with a biological color and then hang it up onto a tree at home. 

An der Seite haben die beiden einen Nagel reingemacht, der die Front zuhält. Wenn man den Nagel entfernt, kann die Front hochgeklappt werden, um das Nest zu reinigen. Was ich nicht wusste, ist, dass man die Vogelhäuser tatsächlich schon ganz früh im Jahr aufhängen soll, spätestens im Februar. Auch hier brauchen die Vögel ein bisschen Zeit, um sie anzunehmen und viele brüten auch schon recht früh. 

On the left side Mumpel put a nail that keeps the front side close. When we need to clean the nest we can take the nail out and then put up the front. One thing I didn't know is that you are supposed to hang up the nesting boxes in february already because many birds breed early in the year and also they do need time to accept the boxes.

Heinzelmännchen

Für unseren nächsten Familienausflug hatten wir uns gedacht, wir machen vielleicht mal was anderes als in ein "normales" Museum zu gehen und kamen so auf die Idee, ins "Time Ride" nach Köln zu fahren. Dort erfährt man etwas über Köln um 1909. Es ist ein "lebendiges Museum" mit drei Stationen. Zuerst erfährt man vor einer großen Karte von Köln etwas über die Geschichte, wechselt dann in ein kleines Kino, um einen Film über Kölns Geschichte anzusehen und geht am Schluss mit 3-D-Brillen in die alte Straßenbahn, um sich mit der VR-Brille eine Fahrt durch das damalige Köln anzuschauen. 

For our next family trip we thought we'd do something different to visiting a "regular" museum, so we had the idea "Time Ride" in cologne could be worth visiting. It's a "living history" - museum that takes you back to the year 1909. First of all a staff member showed us a map of cologne in 1909 on which we could see the difference of size of the city compared to today. She explained a couple of things to us and afterwards lead us into a small cinema. We there watched a movie short about cologne history from roman times on and after that travelled through time in an old tram by using virtual reality glasses. The tour took us through the streets of cologne of 1909.

Wir waren uns nachher einig, dass die Tour in der Straßenbahn der beste Part war, wir jedoch alle nicht so ganz begeistert waren. Der Film über die Geschichte Kölns war eigentlich nur eine kurze Zusammenfassung der wichtigsten Stationen in der Geschichte, da hätte ich mir mehr Infos gewünscht und der 3-D Film war unscharf und nicht wirklich auf dem Stand der Technik. Fazit also: es war ganz nett aber wir für unseren Teil müssen nicht nochmal hin. 

All of us agreed that the tour in the tram was the best part of the whole tour. None of us was really enthusiastic. The movie showed just a very short summary of all important events in the history of the city, we all thought we'd get some more information. The virtual reality tour was ok but the picture should have been more clear, it was not really up to today's technical standard. Anyhow, it was a nice trip but its not a museum we'd want to visit again. 

 Wir sind im Anschluss noch bei den Heinzelmännchen vorbei gegangen. Die Skulpturen und Reliefs befinden sich direkt vor dem Brauhaus Früh. Im Sommer sieht das natürlich bei entsprechendem Licht viel schöner aus als bei dem trüben Wetter. 

Afterwards we went to have a look at the Heinzelmännchen. These little gnomes appear in a legend of the city of cologne and it tells the story of the little gnomes doing all the work for the citizens of cologne at night while the citizens are asleep. That allowed the cologne citizens to be lazy during the day as all their work was done by the house gnomes. One day the tailor's wife was so nosy to see who is doing the work at night that she spread peas on the stairs in her house. When the Heinzelmännchen came they fell over the peas and from that day on they were never seen in cologne again and people had to do all the work themselves. :-)

Winter memories - Winter Erinnerungen

Diese Woche geht es bei uns noch ruhig zu und deshalb bin ich auch - genau wie über Weihnachten - immer wieder mal dazu gekommen, an meinem Jahreszeitenbuch zu arbeiten. Ich habe mir vorgenommen, das Jahr über wirklich dran zu bleiben denn ich finde, es gibt nichts besseres, um sich zwischendurch zu erden, als sich mit etwas kreativem zu beschäftigen. 

After christmas vacation we are starting every-day life slowly and so I do find the time to work on my seasonal book more often than usually. I plan to really accomplish a whole year of drawing and writing a sort of diary into this seasonal book because I find there is no better way of grounding oneself than doing something creative.

Malen hat eine beruhigende Wirkung auf mich, kennt Ihr das auch? Allerdings muss ich auch dafür in der Stimmung sein. An manchen Tagen will einfach nichts klappen und dann lasse ich es lieber. Im Moment bin ich aber gern und mit Spaß dabei. 

Drawing has sort of a soothing effect on me, do you know what I mean, do you feel similar? But I have to be in the right mood for drawing. Some days it just doesn't want to work and nothing turns out the way I wanted. Thats the moment to put the drawing materials aside for some days. At the moment its much fun though. 

 

 

 Rob zeichnet auch viel, er beschäftigt sich mit seinem neuen Zeichenbuch über Pferde und hat dieses Pferd mit Hilfe einer Anleitung gezeichnet und schattiert. 

 Rob does a lot of drawing as well. He got a new book of how to draw horses and this is his first try. 

 Morgens im Dunkeln nur mit Kerzenschein wirft der Wichtel unheimliche Schatten. :-)

Early in the mornings when its still dark outside and only candles give light, the imp throws spooky shadows. :-)

 

Wir haben den Weihnachtsbaum schon rausgeschmissen und dieses Jahr bin ich ein bisschen traurig darüber, es war eigentlich noch so gemütlich. Doch er war nur noch eine Trauergestalt mit immer weniger Nadeln. Dafür steht jetzt Willi Wichtel in der Ecke, zusammen mit meinen Apfelzweigen mit Kugeln drin und einer Laterne. 

We already got rid of our tree and I have to admit that this year I'm a little sad about that, we are still all feeling cosy and it just doesn't look as cosy without the tree. But it had to be thrown out as it was loosing all of its needles and looked rather sadly. So now there is Willi imp standing in the tree corner together with a lantern and my apple trees which I have decorated.

Kolumba Museum

Zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr wollten wir mit den Kindern gern die Rembrandt Ausstellung in Köln anschauen, sind aber dann, nachdem wir gesehen haben, wieviel im Wallraf-Richartz Museum los war, im Kolumba Museum gelandet. Das Kolumba Museum ist ein Kunstmuseum das zum Erzbistum Köln gehört. Es wurde auf die im Krieg zerstörte Kirche St. Kolumba gebaut und integriert die Reste dieser Kirche in seinem Neubau. Im Innenhof kann man sehen, wie alt und neu kombiniert wurden. 

During the christmas holidays we wanted to visit the Wallraf Richartz museum in cologne which contains an exhibition of Rembrandt but when we got to the museum it was so crowded inside that we decided to visit the Kolumba museum instead. The Kolumba museum belongs to the Archdiocese of colonge and is an art museum. It was built on top of the church of St. Kolumba that was destroyed during war and it contains the rests of the church inside. In the inner courtyard you can see the combination of old and new buildings. 

Die Bäume im Innenhof nennen sich Gleditschien, auch "falscher Christusbaum" oder Lederhülsenbaum. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass der Hof im Frühjahr und Sommer richtig schön aussieht. Jetzt im Winter hat man nur die langen Hülsen am Baum hängen sehen. 

These trees in the inner courtyard are called gleditsia trees or sweet locust or thorny locust. I can imagine them looking really nice during spring and summer time. Now during winter we could only see its legumes. 

Das ganze Museum hat eine beeindruckende Architektur. Es ist ganz modern und wenn man durch diese Tür geht kommt man in den überdachten Raum, in dem sich die Reste der ehemaligen Kirche St. Kolumba befinden.

The whole museum has a pretty impressive architecture. Its a modern building but when you walk through this huge door you enter the room of the destroyed church. 

Über eine Brücke kann man durch die ehemalige Kirche gehen. Hinten an der Wand sieht man auch wieder, wie der Neubau auf die alten Steine draufgesetzt wurde. Peter Zumthor hat dieses Gebäude konzipiert. Man hört so gut wie nichts von draußen, obwohl sich das Museum mitten in der Stadt befindet und jede Menge kleiner Löcher im oberen Bereich des Neubaus befinden, die nicht mit Glas ausgestattet sind. Es war eiskalt in der Kirche aber für mich war es der schönste und interessanteste Teil des ganzen Museums. 

We could walk through the former church using a wooden bridge that lead us through it. In the back we could see how the new building was built right on top of the old stones, it really does look like a combination of old and new, which it is. We could hear almost no noises from the streets outside although the museum is located in the middle of the city of cologne and although its new walls have a bunch of holes with no glass in them. It was so very cold in there but to me it was the most interesting and nice part of the whole museum. 

Das ist die Außenwand bzw. die Glaswände einer kleinen Marienkapelle. Wenn man aus dem Museum wieder herausgeht und links um die Ecke geht, kommt man in die Kapelle. Dort sind wir ganz am Schluss gewesen, dort steht auch die Statue der heiligen Kolumba. 

What you see here is the outer glass walls of a little chapel of St. Mary. When you leave the museum and turn left, then walk around the corner you get to the chapel. A statue of Kolumba is hanging in there, we went to the chapel at the end of our visit.

Es gab so wahnsinnig viel zu sehen in den vielen Ausstellungsräumen, alte und zeitgenössische Kunst, dass ich hier nur stellvertretend ein paar Bilder zeige. Beschriftungen and sämtlichen Kunstwerken fehlten, wir haben aber am Eingang ein kleines Büchlein bekommen, in dem alle Werke aufgelistet waren. Für mich ist das Konzept des lebendigen Museums aber hauptsächlich in der überbauten Kirche aufgegangen. 

There were so very many art works to see in so many exhibition rooms, old as well as contemporary art. I show some pictures vicarious for all the art works, it's just to much otherwise. None of the art works had any explanitions with it but when we entered the museum we got a little booklet with explanations in it. The concept of a living museum to me was fulfilled mostly in the old church with the surrounding new building.

In der Marienkapelle hängt eine Statue der heiligen Kolumba - a statue of Kolumba is hanging in the little chapel

Auf dem Rückweg zum Parkhaus haben wir noch im Cafe Eigel Halt gemacht und Kaffee und Kakao getrunken. Im Schaufenster steht dieses riesige, tolle Lebkuchenhaus als Dekoration. Die Fensterscheibe davor war voll von kleinen Fingerabdrücken von den Kindern, die dort standen und gestaunt haben. 

On the way back to the car we stopped at Cafe Eigel and had coffee and hot chocolate. They have this huge beautiful gingerbread house in their store window. The window was full of little fingerprints from all the kids standing in front of it looking at that really nice decoration.
