Inuit and harvest - Inuit und Ernte

Wir sind immernoch bei den Wikingern, bzw. von dort aus auf die Inuit gekommen. Eigentlich wollten wir mit den Wikingern schon längst fertig sein und zum Mittelalter übergehen, doch das Thema hat uns so viel Spaß gemacht und ich habe diese Bücher passend zum Thema noch gefunden, also lesen wir noch etwas länger darüber. Das Mittelalter läuft ja nicht weg. 

We are still reading about the vikings and also about the Inuit. Actually we wanted to be through with vikings and greenland residentsby now. We thought we could already move on the middle ages but we had so much fun reading about inuit and vikings and I found some more interesting books so we read some more about all of it. I suppose the middle ages will wait for two more weeks.

Nach "Ein Schiff nach Grönland" von Ingeborg Engelhardt lesen wir jetzt dieses Buch über das Leben der Kinder der Baffin Insel in Kanada. Es gefällt uns bisher gut, veranschaulicht das tägliche Leben der Inuit, ihren Kampf im Überleben im Eis, ihre Kultur, Nahrungssuche und vielem mehr. Es ist in teils spannenden, teils lustigen einzelnen Geschichten geschrieben. 

After reading "A ship to greenland" from Ingeborg Engelhardt we now read a biographic story about life of the children of the Baffin Island in Canada. We like the stories about the Inuits' daily life, their culture, their struggle with the hard life in the ice and their ways of finding food and hunting a lot. It is written in partly funny and partly serious rather short stories of an Inuit child.

Einen Gedanken möchte ich hier teilen: das Buch von Ingeborg Engelhardt hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Ich habe daraufhin nachgeschaut, ob ich noch weitere Bücher von ihr kaufen kann, doch das geht schlecht, weil sie nicht mehr verlegt wird. Man kann sie höchstens über Antiquariate kaufen. Ich verstehe nicht, warum so gut geschriebene, interessante und in spannende Geschichten eingebettete Geschichtsbücher einfach nicht mehr verlegt werden. Natürlich ist das Buch schon alt, aber man hätte es doch einfach neu auflegen und den Einband moderner gestalten können. Die Geschichte ist einfach gut und auch noch eine wahre Geschichte der Wikinger auf Grönland. Mir ist das schon ein paarmal aufgefallen, dass ältere Autoren nicht mehr neu aufgelegt werden. Doch viele (natürlich nicht alle) neue Bücher haben einfach gefühlt viel weniger Inhalt als die älteren Bücher, die auch noch sprachlich vielleicht etwas mehr Wortschatz verlangen als viele Bücher von heute. 

Wie auch immer - wir haben uns zwei weitere ihrer Bücher rausgesucht. Eins konnte man neu kaufen, das andere bestellen wir gebraucht. Passend zum Mittelalter geht es dann einmal um Hexenprozesse und einmal um Barbarossa. 

I would like to share one thought here: The last book we read "A ship to greenland" we all liked so much that I tried to get some other books of the same author. I found that that is not as easy to accomplish as I thought because her books are not being published anymore. Maybe antiquarian bookshops have them. I find it such a pity that older but very interestingly written books with embedded history are not published anymore. Of course this book is an old book but in my opinion it could have been easily printed with a modern cover. The story of the vikings of greenland is simply good and a true story as well. I noticed that this happens with quite many older authors or books. But many (of course not all) of the new books often appear to have not as much content as older books and also the speech in them is often much simpler and therefore to me a bit boring. 

However - we will order two more books from I. Engelhardt, one is about the witch trials and the other one about King Barbarossa, so it will fit in our subject of the middle ages perfectly.

Something is going on - Es tut sich was

Es tut sich was im Selbstversorger-Garten. Mumpel hat vor ein paar Tagen für unseren Gemüseeintopf Paprika gemacht und kurzerhand ein paar Samen in die Erde gedrückt, gewässert und auf die Fensterbank in der Küche gestellt. Dort steht der Topf in der Sonne und es haben sich tatsächlich fünf Paprika daraus entwickelt.

Something is going on in our veggie garden project. A couple of days ago Mumpel made peppers for lunch and she took the seeds out and put them into some soil in a pot. She watered it and put it onto the windowsill in the kitchen. There was obviously enough sun for them to grow, we have now five new pepper plants.

Im Hochbeet draußen tut sich auch etwas, die ersten Radieschen kommen und wachsen schön an. Meine Bewässerung funktioniert auch endlich, so dass ich viel weniger gießen muss und günstiger vom Wasserverbrauch und den Kosten her ist es auch noch. Die Möhren und Zwiebeln sind noch nicht so weit, von ihnen sieht man noch nicht viel. Was baut Ihr denn so an?

Radish is starting to grow quite fast in the raised flower bed outside in the garden. I'm so glad the automatic watering for the garden is now working. That means I don't have to do the watering by hand each day and it is also much cheaper to have it that way and the water that is used for it is less than if I would do it. Carrots and onions are out already but not as far in progress yet than the radish is. What veggies do you grow?

In diesem alten Kochtopf, den man nicht mehr benutzen kann, wächst Kapuzinerkresse. Wir wollen sie später unter den Apfelbaum pflanzen. Ich habe gelesen, dass sich Kräuter unter Obstbäumen gut machen und Schädlinge abhalten. Diese Sorte von Kapuzinerkresse rankt den Stamm herauf. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das im Sommer ganz hübsch aussieht.

Nasturtium is groing in an old pot that we can't use for cooking anymore. It needs to grow a bit more and then we will plant it right under our apple tree. I have read that herbs under fruit trees keep away the pests. This kind of  nasturtium rambles up the trunk and I can well imagine it  will look nicely during summer.

Rob hat die letzten zwei Tage mit seinem Vater in der Werkstatt verbracht und zum ersten Mal gelernt, wie man zinkt. Hierbei stellt man Verbindungen zwischen zwei Holzstücken her, ohne Leim oder Schrauben benutzen zu müssen. Das ist eine alte Technik, die aber für die Ausbildung sitzen muss. Sie wird zum Beispiel zum Zusammenbauen von Schubladen verwendet. Das ist gar nicht so einfach, mit dem Stecheisen nur genausoviel Holz wegzunehmen, wie man muss, damit die Formen haargenau ineinander passen. Auf dem Bild seht Ihr seinen ersten Versuch, der schon richtig gut geworden ist. Ich war richtig begeistert. :-)

During the last two days Rob has been to the workshop with his dad. Thomas for the first time taught him how to tenon. I'm not sure if that is the correct english word for it. It means to put two pieces of wood together without using glue or scres. It is a connection only from wood. This is a rather old technique that is seldom used for putting together the wooden pieces of a drawer for example. It is part of the exam so each apprentic has to know how to do it. It is not easy to accomplish when you try for the first time and Thomas and I think he did a really good job, I was really excited he did such a good job. :-)

Mumpel und ich haben im Englischbuch Nummer drei angefangen und sind bei den Relativpronomen

Mumpel and I started with english book number three and are just now learning about relative pronouns.

Mumpel hat gestern zwei Karten in ihr Heft über die Germanen gezeichnet. Wir sprechen gerade über die germanischen Großstämme, die Teilung des römischen Reiches und die Gründe für die Völkerwanderung.

Yesterday Mumpel drew two cards into her booklet about the teutons. We spoke about germanic tribes, about the devision of the roman empire into to empires and about the reasons for the migration of nations.

Beim Mittagessen waren wir alleine, die Jungs haben in der Werkstatt gegessen. Mumpel hat ein Omelette gemacht mit Zwiebeln und Kräutern aus dem Garten, nämlich Schnittlauch und Petersilie.

For lunch it was only the two of us girls. The boys had lunch in the workshop. Mumpel made omelette with onions and herbs from our garden: parsley and chives.

In der Zwischenzeit habe ich einen Tomatensalat gemacht,  dazu gab es Nudeln mit Tomatensauce.

Meanwhile I made tomato salad and we had noodles with tomatoe sauce with it.

Pottery of the Teutons - Töpfern wie die Germanen

Mumpel und ich nehmen immernoch die Germanen durch. Wir haben eine kleine Dokumentation gesehen und erfahren, dass die Germanen noch keine Töpferscheibe besaßen. Sie haben zum Herstellen ihrer Gefäße die Wulsttechnik angewandt. Mumpel hat aus Ton diese Schale in besagter Technik hergestellt, man kann das gut auf dem Bild gut sehen weil sie auf dem Kopf steht.

Mumpel and I are still working on our Teutons subject. We watched a documentary the other day and found out that they didn't have potter's wheels yet back then. Instead to create their vessels they used a speacial coiling technique to shape the clay. Mumpel did a little bowl using the coiling technique, you can see it on the picture as the bowl is upside down.

Mumpels Heft zu den Germanen nimmt Gestalt an. Wir haben schon soviel gemacht, dass wir ein zweites Heft angefangen haben.

Mumpel is getting there with her booklet on Teutons. In fact we already did so much about them that we started a new notebook.

Mittags haben wir vor dem Mittagessen noch schnell einen Apfelkuchen aus den letzten Äpfeln gebacken. Mumpel liebt backen - und Kuchen.

Shortly before lunch we hurried baking an apple cake from our remaining apples. Mumpel loves baking and cake as well.

Wir haben Thomas in der Werkstatt besucht und draußen auf dem überdachten Holzstapel ganz oben direkt unter dem Dach ein Amselnest gefunden mit nur einem Ei. Mal schauen, ob die Amsel es ausbrütet. Wir haben einige Zeit gewartet, aber sie nicht gesehen. Hoffentlich kommt sie wieder.

We visited Thomas at the workshop and outside right on top of the stack of wood under the roof we found this blackbird nest with only one egg in it. I hope the mother will come back. We waited quite some time for her to return but we haven't seen her.

The Romans - Die Römer

Was kann ich zu meiner Verteidigung sagen? Eigentlich gar nichts. :-) Der Wichtel steht immer noch im Wohnzimmer und es sieht immernoch weihnachtlich aus, obwohl schon Februar ist. Das Wetter war aber hier auch so schlecht und so kalt, dass es mir überhaupt nicht vorkommt, als könne bald Hoffnung auf Frühling bestehen. 

What can I say to my defense? Nothing really. :-) The imp is still standing around in our living room, making it look like christmas although we have february. But the weather has been so bad and cold that I still don't have much hope spring might be near.

Wir haben endlich mit den Römern angefangen. Das sind die Sachbücher, die wir uns zum Thema anschauen werden. Den Aeneas haben wir zuende gelesen und im Heft angefangen. Aus den Was - ist Was - Büchern picken wir uns das ein oder andere wichtige raus, werden sie aber nicht komplett lesen. Ich finde die Bücher teilweise unvollständig geschrieben und nicht ganz logisch aufgebaut. Dafür habe ich aber in der Mediathek des ZDF eine schöne Dokureihe gefunden, die sich "Große Völker" nennt. Eine Folge handelt von den Römern, die werden wir uns anschauen. 

Finally started with the Romans. These non-fiction books we will read to find out about roman life. We are not going to read all of it because I find they are partially incomplete and not always structured logically so we search for the info we need in addition to our other studies. I found a nice series of documentations on german tv which is called "Great people" and they have one documentation about the Romans, we will watch that.

Kolumba Museum

Zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr wollten wir mit den Kindern gern die Rembrandt Ausstellung in Köln anschauen, sind aber dann, nachdem wir gesehen haben, wieviel im Wallraf-Richartz Museum los war, im Kolumba Museum gelandet. Das Kolumba Museum ist ein Kunstmuseum das zum Erzbistum Köln gehört. Es wurde auf die im Krieg zerstörte Kirche St. Kolumba gebaut und integriert die Reste dieser Kirche in seinem Neubau. Im Innenhof kann man sehen, wie alt und neu kombiniert wurden. 

During the christmas holidays we wanted to visit the Wallraf Richartz museum in cologne which contains an exhibition of Rembrandt but when we got to the museum it was so crowded inside that we decided to visit the Kolumba museum instead. The Kolumba museum belongs to the Archdiocese of colonge and is an art museum. It was built on top of the church of St. Kolumba that was destroyed during war and it contains the rests of the church inside. In the inner courtyard you can see the combination of old and new buildings. 

Die Bäume im Innenhof nennen sich Gleditschien, auch "falscher Christusbaum" oder Lederhülsenbaum. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass der Hof im Frühjahr und Sommer richtig schön aussieht. Jetzt im Winter hat man nur die langen Hülsen am Baum hängen sehen. 

These trees in the inner courtyard are called gleditsia trees or sweet locust or thorny locust. I can imagine them looking really nice during spring and summer time. Now during winter we could only see its legumes. 

Das ganze Museum hat eine beeindruckende Architektur. Es ist ganz modern und wenn man durch diese Tür geht kommt man in den überdachten Raum, in dem sich die Reste der ehemaligen Kirche St. Kolumba befinden.

The whole museum has a pretty impressive architecture. Its a modern building but when you walk through this huge door you enter the room of the destroyed church. 

Über eine Brücke kann man durch die ehemalige Kirche gehen. Hinten an der Wand sieht man auch wieder, wie der Neubau auf die alten Steine draufgesetzt wurde. Peter Zumthor hat dieses Gebäude konzipiert. Man hört so gut wie nichts von draußen, obwohl sich das Museum mitten in der Stadt befindet und jede Menge kleiner Löcher im oberen Bereich des Neubaus befinden, die nicht mit Glas ausgestattet sind. Es war eiskalt in der Kirche aber für mich war es der schönste und interessanteste Teil des ganzen Museums. 

We could walk through the former church using a wooden bridge that lead us through it. In the back we could see how the new building was built right on top of the old stones, it really does look like a combination of old and new, which it is. We could hear almost no noises from the streets outside although the museum is located in the middle of the city of cologne and although its new walls have a bunch of holes with no glass in them. It was so very cold in there but to me it was the most interesting and nice part of the whole museum. 

Das ist die Außenwand bzw. die Glaswände einer kleinen Marienkapelle. Wenn man aus dem Museum wieder herausgeht und links um die Ecke geht, kommt man in die Kapelle. Dort sind wir ganz am Schluss gewesen, dort steht auch die Statue der heiligen Kolumba. 

What you see here is the outer glass walls of a little chapel of St. Mary. When you leave the museum and turn left, then walk around the corner you get to the chapel. A statue of Kolumba is hanging in there, we went to the chapel at the end of our visit.

Es gab so wahnsinnig viel zu sehen in den vielen Ausstellungsräumen, alte und zeitgenössische Kunst, dass ich hier nur stellvertretend ein paar Bilder zeige. Beschriftungen and sämtlichen Kunstwerken fehlten, wir haben aber am Eingang ein kleines Büchlein bekommen, in dem alle Werke aufgelistet waren. Für mich ist das Konzept des lebendigen Museums aber hauptsächlich in der überbauten Kirche aufgegangen. 

There were so very many art works to see in so many exhibition rooms, old as well as contemporary art. I show some pictures vicarious for all the art works, it's just to much otherwise. None of the art works had any explanitions with it but when we entered the museum we got a little booklet with explanations in it. The concept of a living museum to me was fulfilled mostly in the old church with the surrounding new building.

In der Marienkapelle hängt eine Statue der heiligen Kolumba - a statue of Kolumba is hanging in the little chapel

Auf dem Rückweg zum Parkhaus haben wir noch im Cafe Eigel Halt gemacht und Kaffee und Kakao getrunken. Im Schaufenster steht dieses riesige, tolle Lebkuchenhaus als Dekoration. Die Fensterscheibe davor war voll von kleinen Fingerabdrücken von den Kindern, die dort standen und gestaunt haben. 

On the way back to the car we stopped at Cafe Eigel and had coffee and hot chocolate. They have this huge beautiful gingerbread house in their store window. The window was full of little fingerprints from all the kids standing in front of it looking at that really nice decoration.
