Achtung liebe Leser, dies wird ein langer Post, dafür, wie ich hoffe, ein interessanter.
Dear Readers, this is going to be a long but - as I hope - interesting post.
Wir haben heute alle zusammen einen sehr interessanten Ausflug in eine Tuchfabrik gemacht. Das Besondere an dieser Tuchfabrik ist, dass ihre gesamte Produktionstechnik noch erhalten ist. Alle Maschinen aus dem 19. Jh., wie sie ehemals in der Wolltuchfabrik benutzt wurden, sind erhalten und teilweise konserviert, teilweise immernoch funktionstüchtig. Von 1844 an bis 1961 fanden sämtliche Arbeitsschritte einer Tuchproduktion unter einem Dach statt. Hier wurden nur Wolltuche hergestellt, da diese am hochwertigsten waren und am Besten gewärmt haben. Das war wichtig, denn die Fabrik hat auch für die Kriege hergestellt.
Der letzte Besitzer der Fabrik ist mit seinen Arbeitern so verblieben, dass er die Fabrik wieder öffnet, sobald wieder Aufträge da sind und der Geldfluss wieder stimmt. Er hatte nie vor die Fabrik für immer zu schließen und hat sich per Handschlag von jedem Arbeiter, dieses Versprechen gebend, verabschiedet. Deshalb ist alles noch genauso erhalten wie damals, 1961! Er ist in den nächsten 10 Jahren regelmäßig in der Fabrik gewesen und hat alle Geräte in Schuss gehalten bis er einsehen musste dass er doch dauerhaft schließen und verkaufen muss.
The four of us took a very interesting trip to a cloth factory today. What's special about this factory is that its production technology is still complete and remained. All machines that were used from 1844 until 1961 remained in the factory, partly preserved and partly still funcional. All steps taken from bringing wool to the factory until the cloth made of it left the factory on its way to the owners took place under the same roof. They only did wooly cloth here because clothes made from wool had a very high quality and this was important as the factory produced for both wars.
The last owner of the factory actually wanted to re-open his company again as soon as he had new assignments and cash flow was guaranteed again. He never wanted to shut it down for all time and he promised to open it again to each worker with handshake. This is the reason why the machines are still exactely like they were when he closed and turned the key in 1961. During the closing period of the next ten years he went in regularly to check machines and keep them in order until he had to accept that he had to close it forever.
Einer der ersten Arbeitsschritte fand in der Wolferei statt. Nachdem verschiedene Wollsorten und Wollqualitäten optimal zusammengemischt wurden, um ein gutes Ergebnis des jeweils herzustellenden Tuches zu ermöglichen, hat man in der Wolferei die Wolle aufgelockert und durchmischt. Das ging mit Hilfe von Reißzähnen aus Metall und der Vorgang wurde mehrmals gemacht. Man kann die Reißzähne auf Rollen hier leider nicht sehen weil sie abgedeckt sind. Das wurde zum Arbeitsschutz gemacht.
Interessant war, dass der Arbeitsschutz früher dem Arbeitnehmer oblag und der Arbeitgeber sich diesbezüglich um nichts kümmern musste. Unfassbar heutzutage. Allerdings gab es hier auch nie einen ernstzunehmenden Unfall. Das Schlimmste was einmal passiert ist, ist, dass sich ein Arbeiter ein Bein brach - als er die Treppe hinunterfiel.
After different sorts and qualities of wool were brought together to guarantee the right result for the production of the cloth wanted, the mixed wool was loosened up with the machine you can see on this picture. In the machine there are large rolls with fangs to loosen it up. Unfortunately you cannot see the fangs because they are covered up. This was a means of safety for the workers.
Interesting fact: in former times the safety of the workers was all up to the workers themselves, the boss wasn't obliged to provide saftety at all. Hard to believe nowadays. But they never had a serious accident in all these years in this factory - the worst thing that ever happened was that someone broke his leg when he fell down the steps. So they were lucky concerning accidents.

Das sah tatsächlich aus als hätte es geschneit, als die Wolle hinunterfiel. Diese Maschine wurde uns gezeigt, ein Mitarbeiter hat sie für uns kurz angestellt. Faszinierend, dass die Maschinen alle noch funktionieren.
After the process of loosening the wool is being transportet in a pipe underneath the ceiling. It falls down onto the floor and is being picked up and brought to the next station. It actually looked like it was snowing when the wool came down from the pipe. This machine was turned on to show the process to us. Fascinating for us that all the machines still work.

Auf dieser Waage wurde die Farbe abgewogen. Interessant war, dass für die Produktion hochwertiger Stoffe die lose Wolle gefärbt wurde und nicht der spätere Stoff. So wurde garantiert dass die Wolle bis ins Kleinste durchfärbt war. Die Farbe zu mischen war nur eine ungefähr genaue Sache, man musste also genau wissen was man tut damit nachher auch die entsprechende Farbe herauskommt.
Bei der Mischung der Farben wurden auch jede Menge Chemikalien eingesetzt wie Ameisensäure, Essigsäure und Salmiakgeist. Man kann sich leicht vorstellen, wie es den Arbeitern gegangen sein muss, nachdem sie jahrelang diesen giftigen Substanzen ausgesetzt waren. Damals wusste man noch nichts von der Giftigkeit dieser Chemikalien. Dass die Farben in den naheliegenden Fluss abgeleitet wurden hat der Wasserqualität sehr geschadet denn diese Tuchfabrik war nur eine von sehr vielen in der Gegend.
On this scale the workers measured colors that were used. We found it interesting that they colored the loose wool whenever they produced high quality. This way they guaranteed that every single bit was colored.
The workers had to use chemicals when they mixed the colors. Chemicals were for example formic acid, acetic acid or ammonia liquid. It is easy to imagine how sick the workers must have been after working with these poisoning chemicals for years but back then nobody knew about the poisonous factors of the chemicals. Another problem was water quality at the time. All colors with chemicals that they used were just forwarded to the local river and this factory was only one out of a whole lot of cloth factories in the surrounding area.

Es gab zwei Färbemaschinen. Sollte die Qualität besonders gut sein, wie zum Beispiel für die Uniformen für den Krieg, wurden die losen Wollfäden gefärbt. Kam es nicht so sehr auf die Qualität an, färbte man Stoffbahnen. Hier fand also der Färbeprozess nach der Produktion statt.
The factory had two machines. Whenever the dye of the cloth had to be of high quality they dyed the losened wool. Whenever quality didn't matter as much they dyed the produced cloth meaning that in this case they dyed it after the poduction process.

In der Tuchfabrik arbeiteten fast nur Männer denn die Arbeit an den Maschinen war schwer zu verrichten und außerdem gefährlich. Beim Schleudern verhakte sich beispielsweise das Tuch oft und man musste schon genau wissen wie man es wieder löste und sich dabei möglichst nicht verletzte.
Die Fabrik besteht aus zwei Stockwerken und man kann sich leicht vorstellen, wie anstrengend das gewesen sein muss, die Stoffe, die über 100 Kilo wogen, eben mal während der verschiedenen Produktionsschritte von oben nach unten und wieder nach oben zu tragen.
Nur oben unterm Dach, bei der Kontrolle der Stoffe, arbeiteten junge Mädchen im Alter von 14 bis 25 Jahren. Normalerweise gründeten die Mädchen spätestens mit 25 Jahren ihren eigenen Hausstand und hatten dann im eigenen Haushalt, Gemüseanbau und mit den Kindern genug zu tun. Sie kehrten nicht mehr zu ihrer Arbeit zurück.
The work in the factory was mainly done by men because working at the machines was a hard job and dangerous at times. When flinging the cloth it sometimes got caught in the machine and the worker who had to release it had to know exactely what he was doing to prevent himself from getting hurt.
There were two floors workers worked on. It's easy to imagine how exhausting it must have been to move cloth from floor to floor several times a day to take different production steps. The cloth often weighed way more than 100 kilograms.
Only the checking of the cloth at the end of the production was done by girls aged 14 to 25. At that time girls got married at the age of around 25 and then they had enough to do with their own households, with the kids and with vegetable growing. They never returned to their workplace.

Das Walken war eine sehr verantwortungsvolle Aufgabe denn durch diesen Vorgang wurde die Wolle verdichtet. Je dichter das Tuch nachher war, desto robuster und hochwertiger. Wurden hier Fehler gemacht bzw. nicht ordentlich gewalkt, so konnte man das auch nicht mehr beheben. Der Fehler war sichtbar und spürbar im Tuch und das Tuch konnte nicht mehr gut verkauft werden. Den Arbeitgeber kosteten solche Fehler bares Geld, den Arbeitnehmer auch.
Flexing was a very responsibly duty because by flexing the wool was compressed. The more compressed it was the more robust and of higher quality it became. Whenever the worker didn't do his job right on this machine you would see his mistake during the whole further production and you could also feel his mistake on the cloth. In the end it wasn't easy to sell it because of its minor quality and this meant a loss of money for the boss - and of course for the worker.

Das ist eine Rauhmaschine, mit der Stoffe für besonders hohe Qualität nach dem Walken zusätzlich noch einmal aufgerauht wurden. Hier laufen Rollen dicht an dicht und der Rauhprozess findet mittles Karden statt. Die Karde ist eine Distelart mit festen dornenartigen Stacheln, die diesen Prozess prima übernahmen. Im nächsten Bild kann man sie genauer sehen.
This is a roughening machine and they used it to roughen high quality cloth after flexing it. The machine has heavy rolls that run side by side and teasel does the roughening. Teasel is a kind of a thistle with firmly strong little arms that are able to process the roughening. You can see a closer capture of teasels on the next picture.

Als nächstes muss die Wolle gekämmt werden. Würde man das per Hand machen würde man ganz schön lange brauchen, deshalb hat man eine neue Maschine dafür entwickelt und sie einhundert Jahre lang entwickelt bis sie ein gutes Werk verrichtet. Der aufgerollte Faden ist noch kein richtiger Faden am Stück. Mit ihm kann man noch nichts machen. Diese losen Fäden müssen nach dem Kämmen versponnen werden.
Next thing to do is to comb the wool. If you were to do it by hand it would take up a lot of time so they invented a machine and developed it over a period of 100 years until it did a good job. What you see on the right is not a thread ready to be used for weaving. Next step after combing is to spin it with machines much more complex than a spinning wheel.

Die Wolle aus dem Schaukasten im oberen Bild muss nun zu Fäden gesponnen werden. Dafür gibt es die hochkomplizierten Maschinen aus dem nächsten Bild. Eine davon ist so gut erhalten, dass sie heute noch funktioniert.
All the wool from the upper picture must now be transformed into yarn which takes place with the help of huge machines from the picture below. These machines run in a very complicated way. One of them still works nowadays!
Eigentlich hätten wir diese Maschine auch noch gezeigt bekommen denn sie funktioniert normalerweise noch. Leider ist irgendetwas an ihr kaputt gegangen und das Museum hat extra Techniker engagiert um sie zu reparieren. Die Techniker sind schon seit Wochen dabei und sie läuft auch wieder, hakt aber noch. Es ist also immernoch nicht richtig wieder gut. Wir fanden das faszinierend, dass wir mit unserer heutigen Technik, wo alles immer funktioniert, dann vor einer solchen alten Maschine stehen und sie nur mit hohem Aufwand wieder zum Laufen bringen können. So kompliziert ist diese Maschine!
This machine usually still works but the tour guide wasn't able to show it to us because something broke and the museum hired technicans to fix it. The technicans have been doing work on this machine for weeks and weeks and it still doesn't work completely again. We found that very astonishing - we are living in such a tech dominated world and fixing this old machine takes weeks over weeks. It's mechanic is highly complicated.

Hier entsteht nun das eigentliche Tuch. Im Webraum steht eine Webmaschine neben der anderen. Eine davon hat man für uns Besucher angestellt. Die Schussmaschine einer einzigen Webmaschine macht schon so viel Lärm dass man sich schwer tut sich vorzustellen, wie die Arbeiter den Krach den ganzen Tag lang ausgehalten haben - bei mehreren Maschinen die gleichzeitig laufen.
This is the weaving room in which the actual cloth is being made. For us visitors they turned one machine on and it was so very loud that it is hard to imagine how loud it must have been for the workers with several weaving machines running at the same time and working in that room for a whole day.

Im ersten Schritt müssen die Mädchen, die an dieser Station gearbeitet haben, die Knötchen aus dem Stoff herausschneiden und ihn dann stopfen. Die Knötchen entstehen bei der Verdrehung des Garns beim spinnen. Danach wird der Stoff weiter bearbeitet.
An dieser Station arbeiteten die einzigen Frauen der Fabrik. Alle anderen Arbeitsschritte wären für Mädchen viel zu anstrengend gewesen.
In a first step the girls that were working at this station of the production had to cut out the little knots and then stuff it again. Knots could appear in the process of spinning the yarn.
This was the only place within the whole cloth production where girls worked. All the other work in the factory was only for men as it was way too exhausting for girls.

Man kann das Museum nur mit einer Führung begehen. Keiner darf alleine rein und ich finde das sehr sinnvoll denn sonst ist nicht gewährleistet, dass die Maschinen heil bleiben. Wir durften außer der Wolle und dem fertigen Tuch deshalb auch nichts anfassen aber die Beispiele für die fertigen bzw. fast fertigen Tücher durfte man anfassen. Der Unterschied war deutlich zu tasten.
The only possible way to visit this museum is to do a guided tour and I can understand that they don't want people to walk around there by themselves and touch the machines that are so old. Except for the wool and this almost finished cloth we were not allowed to touch anything. We were well able to feel the difference between the almost finished and the finished wooly cloth.

Mit dieser Dampfmaschine wurden alle Maschinen in der Fabrik betrieben. Eine tolle Sache für die Kinder, einmal eine Dampfmaschine zu sehen. Sie wurde früh morgens eine Stunde vor Arbeitsbeginn angestellt und lief dann ohne Pause den ganzen Tag.
Every single machine in the factory is run with the help of this steam engine. It was great for the kids to see a real steam engine. It was turned on carefully each day one hour before the workers came to work and it ran throughout the whole day.

Dieser Dampfkessel musste regelmäßig mit jeder Menge Kohle befüllt werden, die in der Schubkarre von draußen hereintransportiert wurde. Einmal im Jahr wurden die Brennöfen von Kalk befreit damit es nicht zur Stauung von Dampf kommen konnte. Wäre so etwas passiert, wäre der Dampfkessel explodiert und es wäre zu Toten gekommen.
Die Arbeit der Reinigung hat einen kompletten Tag lang ein jeweils 14-jähriger verrichtet weil nur die jüngsten Arbeiter noch schmal genug waren, in die Öffnung zu passen. Er musste in den Brennofen hereinkriechen und mit dem Hammer zehn Stunden lang den Kalk abschlagen. Für diese Arbeit eines einzigen Tages gab es einen kompletten Monatslohn. Deshalb war dieser Job beliebt, obwohl er furchtbar gewesen sein muss. Es brauchte übrigens eine ganze Woche um den Kessel abzustellen, die Kohlen zu löschen und den Kessel abzukühlen. In der Zeit wurden in der ganzen Fabrik Reparaturarbeiten gemacht.
This steam boiler had to be filled with loads of coal each day. They brought it into the room with a wheelbarrow from outside. Once a year the kiln had to be cleaned from lime otherwise the steam could have lead to an explosion with several dead workers.
This work of cleaning the kiln was done by 14 year old workers. They were young and small enough to fit into it through the very small entrance. They had to crawl into it and reduce the lime with a hammer. For this work of a whole day of at least 10 hours the worker got wage for a complete month. It was a popular job due to the wage although it must have been an awful job. They furthermore needed a whole week to clear the coal and cool down the oven. During this time they did reparation works throughout the factory.
Uns hat dieser Ausflug sehr viel Spaß gemacht, den Kindern genau wie uns auch. Der Tourguide hat die eineinhalb Stunden sehr interessant für uns gestaltet und richtig schön in Bildern erklärt.
This trip was great, the kids and Thomas and I liked it a lot. Our tourgide did a really good job and explained everything in great pictures for us.
