Rob and Mumpel's grandma and grandpa came to visit us and with them we visited the pottery museum in Raeren today. It is located in an old moated castle.
Oma und Opa haben uns besucht und mit ihnen sind wir im Töpfereimuseum in Raeren gewesen. Das Museum befindet sich in einer altern Wasserburg.

We've learned today that clay is found in about three meters depths in the ground...
Wir haben heute gelernt dass Ton in ca. drei Metern Tiefe im Boden gefunden wird...
... and that they cut, churned and hammered it before processing it. This way it was relieved from dirt and air bubbles.
... und dass er früher erst geschnitten, gewalkt und geschlagen wurde, bevor man ihn verarbeitet hat. Das hat man gemacht, um ihn zu säubern und von Luftblasen zu befreien.

This is what an oven looked like. They put a wall of bricks in front once the pots were in the oven. Inbetween the pots they put small pieces of clay so that the pots wouldn't stick to another during the process of burning. Salt was put into the oven while the pots were being burnt to get rid of all the air bubbles.
So hat ein Ofen ausgesehen. Vor dem Brennen wurde der Ofen zugemauert. Zwischen die Töpfe hat man Brennhilfen aus Ton gelegt, damit die Töpfe nicht zusammenhingen. Salz wurde hinzugegeben, um auch die letzten Luftblasen loszuwerden.
Pieter Brueghel was a famous dutch painter and he included the local pottery into this picture. In front of the picture he drew a jug with three handles, a typical jug of the time in Raren.
Der bekannte holländische Maler Pieter Brueghel hat die lokalen Töpferstücke der damaligen Zeit in diesem Bild verewigt. Vorne ein typischer Raerener Dreihenkelkrug.
This fancy map showed to where in the world the rhenish stoneware was transported. It was sought after all over belgium and in germany, in denmark and sweeden and letland and they even transported it as far as to poland and london.
Auf dieser originellen Landkarte wird gezeigt, bis wohin die rheinische Töpferware exportiert wurde. Neben Belgien waren Deutschland, Dänemark und Schweden, Lettland und Polen Abnehmer und sogar in London kam das Steinzeug gut an.

This was part of the floor in the museum. It was made out of the rests of clay pieces that weren't used for pots. This floor looked really really nice.This was a really nice excursion with grandma and grandpa.
Auf dem Bild seht ihr ein Stück des Bodens im Museum. Er wurde aus Tonresten gemacht und sah wirklich ganz toll aus. Das war ein schöner Ausflug mit Oma und Opa.
Toll, das würde uns auch gefallen.
