Corner and garden - Ecke und Garten

 Endlich endlich! Die Wichtel haben den Weg in den Keller gefunden und stattdessen, damit die Ecke nicht so leer aussieht, stehen die schönen Tulpen nun dort - und die Kerzen, die bleiben noch. 

Finally managed to store the imps in the basement and instead put these beautiful tulips into the corner of the room so it doesn't look all empty and boring. Well, the candles will stay there. 

 

Unglaublich aber wahr: ich habe gestern tatsächlich wieder einen Kirschlorbeer gekauft. Wir haben vor ca. einem Jahr die riesige und unförmige, völlig ausufernde und viel zu riesige, alles andere unterdrückende Kirschlorbeerhecke vor dem Haus mit Baggern weggemacht. Sie erstreckte sich über viele Meter, nahm uns Licht und sah einfach nie schön aus - weil wir sie aber auch nicht rechtzeitig begonnen hatten, klein zu halten. Sie hat uns gar nicht mehr gefallen und jetzt ist sie weg und wir vermissen sie. Warum? Weil in dieser Hecke immer im Winter die Vögel sassen und sie haben dort im Frühjahr gebrütet. Seit die Hecke weg ist sind auch die Vögel weg und haben nichts mehr, wo sie sich verstecken können weil wir fast nur noch sommergrüne Sträucher haben. Also haben wir uns entschieden, eine Kirschlorbeerpflanze zu kaufen und es diesmal anders zu machen. Es bleibt bei diesem einen als Solitär und er wird rechtzeitig in Form geschnitten. Auf dass die Piepmätze wiederkommen!

Unbelievable but yet true: I bought a cherry laurel yesterday. About one year ago we got rid of our giant, shapeless, bulky, ugly and every other plant suppressing cherry laurel hedge that grew over meters and meters at our front. We had to dig it out with bulldozers since it was so huge. It took all the light from the front garden, didn't look nice and we didn't like it anymore and were happy to get rid of it actually. I must say it was our own fault that it was an ugly hedge though because we never cut it properly and if you don't cut a cherry laurel from the beginning on it will take over the whole garden. So now its gone and - we learned that we miss the hedge!! That is because all the birds had a place to hide in in winter and they breed their little ones in there each spring. Since the hedge is gone the birds are as well and that makes us sad. So I bought another on but we don't want to have a hedge anymore. We will plant this one cherry laurel and do it right this time by cutting it properly so it doesn't grow uncontrolled. We hope the birds will find their way into our garden again that way.

Another sunday at the workshop - Noch ein Werkstatt-Sonntag

Den Sonntag haben wir zusammen in der Werkstatt verbracht, um für unsere Schneidebretter eine Halterung zu bauen, auf der alle neun Bretter Platz finden. Wir möchten die Holzbretter bald ausstellen und brauchen dafür eine entsprechende Vorrichtung. Die KEIROs könnt Ihr Euch hier bei Instagram anschauen.

On sunday we worked at the workshop. We need to build some kind of device to present our cutting boards on and that is what we built that day. It needs to contain all nine cutting boards. We want to present them in a restaurant soon. You can have a look at our KEIROs here on instagram. 

 Außerdem haben Rob und ich endlich mal wieder neue Fotos gemacht, die ich für Instagram verwenden kann. 

Rob and I took new photos that I can use for our instagram page. 

Wir wollen ein KEIRO Schneidebrett im Helldunkel Kontrast abbilden und dafür muss die Beleuchtung stimmen. 

We want to take a picture of one of the KEIRO cutting boards in a contrast of dark and light so we need to adapt the light for taking the photo.

Birthday cakes - Geburtstagskuchen

An diesem Wochenende hatte Thomas Geburtstag und wir haben den Anlass genutzt, in unserem Lieblingsrestaurant essen zu gehen. 

It was Thomas' birthday the other day and we went out for dinner in our favorite restaurant.

Vorher gab es aber noch eine richtige Kuchenschlacht zu Hause - mit der Familie. Jeder von uns hat einen eigenen Kuchen bzw. Muffins für Thomas gemacht. So waren wir gut gerüstet, als am Nachmittag die Familie zu Besuch kam. Weil ich mal  was anderes machen wollte, als die üblichen süßen Muffins, habe ich diese herzhaften Schinkenmuffins gemacht. 

Before going out we had soooo much cake at home together with our family who arrived in the afternoon. Each of us had baked a cake for Thomas so we had enough cake and muffins for days. I wanted to try something different and made these hearty muffins made with bacon. 

Für die Schinkenmuffins werden Lauchzwiebeln, geraspelte Möhren und Katenschinken in der Pfanne geröstet und mit dem Teig vermischt. Die Speckstreifen werden an die runden Muffinformen angeglichen und dann füllt man den Teig in die Mitte. 

We rosted spring onions, grated carrots and little bacon cubes in a pan and mixed that with the dough. Then we put stripes of bacon into the muffin tins and filled them with the dough. 

 Das ist eine Apfel-Cranberry-Tarte mit Quittengelee - sehr lecker!

This is an apple and cranberry tarte with quince jelly. 

 

Es gab auch noch Blaubeermuffins und einen Schokoladenkuchen mit Mandeln und Birnen, allerdings habe ich von dem Kuchen kein Foto gemacht. Der war auch sehr lecker und saftig. 

We also had blueberry muffins and we made a chocolate cake with pears and almonds in it but unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of it. It was yummy though. 

Meine Mutter hat nicht nur Geschenke für Thomas mitgebracht, sondern für mich auch diesen schönen Strauß Tulpen. 

My mom brought presents for Thomas but also these beautiful tulips for me.

 

The Romans - Die Römer

Was kann ich zu meiner Verteidigung sagen? Eigentlich gar nichts. :-) Der Wichtel steht immer noch im Wohnzimmer und es sieht immernoch weihnachtlich aus, obwohl schon Februar ist. Das Wetter war aber hier auch so schlecht und so kalt, dass es mir überhaupt nicht vorkommt, als könne bald Hoffnung auf Frühling bestehen. 

What can I say to my defense? Nothing really. :-) The imp is still standing around in our living room, making it look like christmas although we have february. But the weather has been so bad and cold that I still don't have much hope spring might be near.

Wir haben endlich mit den Römern angefangen. Das sind die Sachbücher, die wir uns zum Thema anschauen werden. Den Aeneas haben wir zuende gelesen und im Heft angefangen. Aus den Was - ist Was - Büchern picken wir uns das ein oder andere wichtige raus, werden sie aber nicht komplett lesen. Ich finde die Bücher teilweise unvollständig geschrieben und nicht ganz logisch aufgebaut. Dafür habe ich aber in der Mediathek des ZDF eine schöne Dokureihe gefunden, die sich "Große Völker" nennt. Eine Folge handelt von den Römern, die werden wir uns anschauen. 

Finally started with the Romans. These non-fiction books we will read to find out about roman life. We are not going to read all of it because I find they are partially incomplete and not always structured logically so we search for the info we need in addition to our other studies. I found a nice series of documentations on german tv which is called "Great people" and they have one documentation about the Romans, we will watch that.

Gestern ist eine neue Bücherlieferung eingetroffen. David Copperfield hat eintausend einhundert nochwas Seiten - da werden wir wohl eine ganze Weile dran lesen. Doch der Schreibstil in Oliver Twist hat uns gut gefallen, also machen wir uns bald an Dickens` nächstes Werk. Von Wilde, Shakespeare und Doyle habe ich die gesammelten Werke bestellt. Diese Fassungen sind einfach günstiger, als jedes Buch einzeln zu kaufen. Das heißt aber nicht, dass wir alles lesen werden, sondern wir treffen eine Auswahl.

Yesterday we got our new books. David Copperfield has one thousand one hundred and somewhat pages so I suppose we'll be reading on that one quite a while. We like Dickens´ writing style though so we'll be starting to read Copperfield during the next weeks. The other books are collections of writings from Wilde, Shakespeare and Doyle. These collections of all their writings are cheaper than buying each of the books seperately. That doesn't mean we're going to read each and every story though, we'll decide on two or three out of each book.

Bei uns sieht es immer noch weihnachtlich aus. Kerzen machen es gemütlich bei dem sehr wechselnden Winterwetter, das wir zur Zeit haben und der Wichtel ist so dick und groß, dass er noch da steht, weil ich gar nicht weiß, wohin mit ihm in den nächsten Monaten. :-) Seine Tage im Wohnzimmer sind aber gezählt. 

Our living room still has a christmas atmosphere. Candlelight makes it cosy while winter is bringing us very different weather this year and the imp is so big that I honestly don't really know where to put him over the next months. :-) His days in the living room will end soon though.

 Mit Mumpel habe ich den Auftakt zu den Römern begonnen.

Rob hat sich dieses Buch über die Vereinigten Staaten gewünscht. 

Rob wanted to read about the history of the United States. 

Diesen Lorbeer-Schneeball habe ich im Gartencenter gekauft und in den Garten gepflanzt. Von November bis April blüht er weißrosa und hat kleine dunkelblaue Beeren. Er ist immergrün. 

Found this laurel snowball in the garden center and put it into our garden. It has white and pink blossoms and little blue berries from november until april and green leaves all year round.

Ich habe mir fest vorgenommen, wieder regelmäßig richtiges Frühstück für alle zu machen. In der letzten Zeit haben wir alle ständig zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten gefrühstückt, weil irgendwer krank und noch im Bett war oder früher zur Arbeit musste oder am Wochenende die Pferde auch versorgt werden mussten und man sich beeilen wollte oder, oder, oder. Jetzt sitzen wir morgens wieder zusammen beim Frühstück. Man muss sich ein bisschen disziplinieren um wieder Struktur reinzubekommen, aber genau die finde ich wichtig für uns. Wie wichtig sind Euch gemeinsame Mahlzeiten?

I plan to have breakfast with the complete family again in the future. During the last weeks everyone of us just had their breakfast whenever it suited him or her and we never sat at the table as a family together. Either one of us was ill and in bed or had to go to work or hurried to the stable and took their breakfast with them or various other things were going on that kept us from eating together. I found we need this sort of structure though and I prepare breakfast each morning again for all and we fit it in with more consequence now. How important is having meals with the family for you?

Wir haben die Stifte neu sortiert, zwischendurch muss das einfach mal sein. Über die letzten Monate ist alles in einer großen Box gelandet, in der man nichts mehr gefunden hat. 

We sorted out our pens and pencils and our drawing pens. Over the last months we had all our pens in a big box where nobody could find what they needed anymore in. 

Ich bin absolut glücklich mit meinem neuen Garten. Endlich macht es wieder Spaß, rauszugehen. An den Hortensien kommen die ersten Blätter, es ist einfach schön, etwas wachsen zu sehen. Geht es Euch auch so? Trotzdem die Grundplanung abgeschlossen ist und auch die Grundbepflanzung, sind Thomas und ich schon am überlegen, was noch fehlt und welches Blümchen noch wo hin soll. Was auf jeden Fall noch fehlt sind Kräuter. 

I'm so very happy with my new garden. Finally it is fun to go into the garden again. All the hydrangea is getting new little leaves, it is so nice to watch the plants grow. Do you guys feel the same? Although we have a basic planting in the flower beds, Thomas and I are still already thinking about which flowers are still missing and where we could possibly put them. One thing that is important to us all are herbs, we have to get herbs.

 Ich finde, die Blütenstände der Hortensien können sich auch nach dem Blühen noch sehen lassen. 

I think the inflorescences of the hydrangea is beautiful after blossoming as well. 

Woran erkennt man, dass wir Winter haben? Daran, dass wir viel öfter in der Werkstatt sind, um zu bauen, als im Sommer. Thomas schneidet uns Kirschbaumholz, aus dem wir Einsätze für unsere Besteckschubladen machen wollen. Ich habe auch schon an der Kreissäge geschnitten, aber ich muss zugeben, dass mir diese Maschine unheimlich bleibt. Natürlich hat mich Thomas genau instruiert, aber ich hab irgendwie trotzdem immer leichte Angst, mir die Finger abzuschneiden. 

How do we know it's wintertime? We spend much more time in the workshop to build something than in the summer. Thomas is cutting cherry wood for us and we want to cutlery inserts for our kitchen drawers. I have been using the circular saw as well but I have to admit I find this machine somewhat scary. Of course Thomas gave me detailed instructions of how to handle the machine but I can't help myself - there is always a bit of fear left I'll cut my fingers off.

 Ach ja, dann haben wir noch den einzigen Sonnenstrahl des Wochenendes genutzt und die Vogelhäuschen aufgehangen. Das hier ist das Spatzen-Reihenhaus. 

Oh, before I forget: we used the only few minutes of sun on the weekend to put up our bird boxes. This one is the house for the sparrows. 

 Hier zieht hoffentlich eine Meisenfamilie ein. 

Hopefully a chickadee family will move in here. 

Die Futterstation hängt auch wieder. Mit Efeu bewachsen war sie schöner, doch wir haben, in Absprache mit den Nachbarn, den Efeu abgemacht, weil er so gewuchert hat. Am liebsten würde ich wieder neuen dransetzten, weil mir der ganze Zaun grün viel besser gefallen hat. Aber es ist schon eine relative Plage, den Efeu in Schach zu halten. Fehlt nur noch das Insektenhotel. Das bekommt in den nächsten Tagen einen Gartenplatz.

The feeding house is up again as well. It looked a lot nicer when it was overgrown with ivy but we took all the ivy down after talking to our neighbors as it is their fence as well. I would love to put new ivy up on that fence because I liked it with ivy much more but on the other hand it is actually a pain in the behind to control the growth it. The only thing missing now is the insect hotel. It will get its place in the garden during the next days.
