Colorful lights for St. Martin - Bunte Lichter für Sankt Martin

Each fall our interest in handicrafting rises. This is the time of year in which I always realize that we as a family are living after the annual rhythm of life. During the summer, none of the kids show much interest in handicrafting. We like to go outside, get active, move a lot and enjoy the sun. As soon as the days start becoming shorter and darker we feel the need for more light - mostly resulting in making our home cosy with candles. I like orienting our life after the seasons of the year and it all happens intuitively.

This day we are preparing St. Martin's day and we handicraft colorful glas lights. We need a couple of sorted out veggie glases that we cleaned, paste and a brush and of course thin silk paper in all kinds of colors. Oh, and we used a pad to prevent the paste of sticking to our dinner table.

We made little scraps from the silk paper and put them into different bowls. We are about ready to start now. Mixing the paste was easy and went fast, it only took a few minutes until it was ready to be used.

Putting paste onto the glas with the brush and then arranging the scraps onto the glas. Mumpel wanted to wear gloves for this activity but I think she didn't want to wear them because of the paste but just to wear gloves for fun for once. :-)

Das sind unsere fertigen Martinslichter für die Fensterbank - these are our Martin lights to put onto the window ledge

Mumpel and I started to follow up with greek mythology. We read differnet books about the Ilias and Odyssee by different authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Auguste Lechner. All the greek gods and their different intersts in the fight for Troy are partly hard to understand so we take our time reading it and speak about what we read in detail afterward.

I like both authors a lot. They both have different ways of writing of course but they give a good overview about the subject for both kids and youngsters and their writing is always interesting to read.
- Mumpel writes about what we read so she remembers it better.

Troja im Vorhang auf! - Heft  - Troy in a childrens' magazine

This magazine has a nice overview about the Ilias. I like these magazines a lot and so do the kids because they have many appealing drawings in them.

Mumpel does another horse sharing. This is Leni. She is an Irish Cob and just the right horse for Mumpel because she loves this kind of horse. Do you remember my post from summer in which she meets a new horse? That was Toby and she still rides him. Additionally she takes care of Leni now, too and she is having a lot of fun with the two horses.

Deer rut - Hirschbrunft

I went on an excursion to a special forest with Rob the other day. We went there to take photos of deer. After parking the car in the middle of nowhere (or so it seems, there is nothing but landscape in the surrounding area :-) ) we walked through fields to the forest for about 15 minutes to get to the special fenced in place from which it is allowed to take photos. They put up signs to be really quiet so the deer don't get disturbed. Not many people know about this place and therefore it is luckily never crowded, most of the people that come there are nature photografers.

There is a clearing in the forest and on it hundreds of deer come together once a year in september for rut. They stay on the clearing pretty close to the trees from which people can observe them. It is a beautiful nature spectable that one usually never is able to observe - so many beautiful deer in one place. Rob has a Canon camera and a pretty big Sigma lens that goes with it so we were able to zoom the animals in pretty much - they seemed even closer to us looking at them on camera. Rob took great photos - almost 200.

You can hear the roaring of the stag and its very impressive. Magnificent creatures, we wer happy that we made it there on time before they all vanish into the forest again. We were lucky with the weather as well. When we arrived it was grey and rainy but after walking through the forest, when we got to the clearing, the sun came out and stayed for almost an hour. Perfect conditions for taking pictures.

This is where we were standing. I took this photo with my cell phone camera so this is why you can only see the deer as tiny spots.

On the way back to the car we saw new rain clouds coming up and shortly after we started the car it actually did rain again. But the view is beautiful, isn't it? So is the light, despite of the upcoming rain.
This little guy was also caught on camera while on the clearing watching the deer

Hier kommt einer geradewegs auf uns zu - This one is walking straight up to us

Wie niedlich sie in die Kamera gucken - How cute they look, looking straight into the camera

At the time there is much work done in our forests obviously. Lots of trees have been taken down and are stacked on the sides of the paths. They will soon probably be in an auction or already have a new owner and will be sold. In our local park the trees were prepared for wintertime as well. It's starting to get really stormy and there are always old trees out of which branches break and fall down. That can get dangerous and that's why the rangers cut these branches out before they break.

Cookie was happy to take a walk through the forest as well. Although I mus say - it's not really what you call walking with her since she stops at every - and I mean every - single blade of grass that she sees. Everything has to be explored. A very nosy tiny little dog. :-) Anyway - we had a nice day.

St. Michael - Michaelitag

It's becoming cosy at our home slowly but surely

A short while ago we returned from our summer vacation in France. What a difference! You could really say we have prolonged the summer down in France and  it was warm and sunny and just beautiful! But more about our vacation in another post that I will write for you soon.

When we came home we found drousy, dark, rainy and cold weather - well, autumn weather - no comparison to the sunny and hot weather in south france of course.. It took us a couple of days to get used to the different climate but now we are all set for autumn. We have decorated our table and some corners in the house. We started lighting candles again so we can feel cosy.

My parents brought us a beautiful decorated stone tray with pumpkins, date and a wind light from their vacation in the Netherlands. I had never seen such dried date fruits before. They look nice as a decoration though. One of the important things during fall and winter to us is decorating the house, is it the same for you and your family?

We dug out our wooden Ostheimer animals and our salt lamp and decorated them onto our handmade wooden mahogany cutting boards.

Diese Geschichte haben wir zum Michaelitag gelesen. - This is the story we read for St. Michael

For St. Michael day we read his story from one of our german Vorhang auf! - magazines. I ordered them regularly when the kids were little and now we can choose from quite many of them. This magazine also contains instructions for drawing autumn like pictures with children using watercolors and it also has a few nice ideas for handicrafting that we want to try out.

Seht Ihr? Ich bin schon wieder mit Winterjacke unterwegs :-) - See? I have dug out my winter jacket again :-)
