Trip to Cologne - Ausflug nach Köln

Am Wochenende haben wir uns entschlossen, einen Ausflug nach Köln zu machen, um den Kölner Dom zu besichtigen. Wie sich herausstellen sollte, war das keine gute Idee, denn es sind erstens Ferien und zweitens waren wir an einem Sonntag dort. Ergo war der Dom völlig überfüllt, ich habe selten eine Kathedrale erlebt, in der man sich fast umrennt vor lauter Leuten. Das hat nicht so viel Spaß gemacht und wir haben beschlossen, dass wir, wenn wir es einplanen können, nochmal hinfahren. An einem Wochentag.

On the weekend we decided to take a trip to cologne to visit its cathedral. We should soon learn that this was not a really good idee because first of all we have vacation at the time and second of all we went there on a sunday. The cathedral was so very crowded, I've never been to a cathedral being not able to walk through it properly because of all the people in it. So this trip wasn't as much fun as we thought it would be and we decided to come back on a weekday next time. 

Der Kölner Dom hat jede Menge bunte Fensterscheiben mit Bildern darauf, die aus der Bibel erzählen. Wir wollten uns eigentlich informieren, was auf welchen Fenstern zu sehen ist aber wir haben dann überlegt, dass wir demnächst eine der Führungen durch den Dom mitmachen möchten, in der alles erklärt wird.

There are a lot of colorful windows telling stories from the bible in the cathedral of cologne. Actually we were going to read about what the story is on each window but as it was so crowded we thought we'd do a guided tour next time we are here.

Vor wenigen Jahren waren wir bei einem Orgelbauer, um uns anzuschauen, wie eine Orgel gebaut wird. Dieser spezielle Orgelbaubetrieb fertigt riesige Orgeln für Kirchen überall auf der Welt und auch zwei der Orgeln im Kölner Dom hat die Firma gebaut.

Only a few years ago we visited a company that builds organs for churches and cathedrals throughout the world. We wanted to see what building organs is like and made a guided tour. This company built two of the organs in the cathedral of cologne. 
 

Ich liebe gothische Gebäude - I love gothic buildings

Die gefliesten Bilder im Dom fand ich auch ganz beeindruckend. Man muss sich vorstellen, wieviel Mühe das gekostet haben mag, diese minikleinen Fliesen in aussagekräftigen Bildern drapiert und aneinandergelegt zu haben. Das ist nochmal ein Thema für sich, ich glaube, man muss mindestens zwei oder dreimal den Dom besuchen, bis man alles gesehen und verstanden hat.

There are very impressing pictures on the floor of the cathedral, all made of tiny parts of tiles. Just imagine how much work it was to put these fragments together so they look like pictures and tell stories. After we came out of the cathedral I thought we need at least two or three visits to see everything and have information about everything in the cathedral. 

Wir sind anschließend noch ein wenig durch die Stadt gelaufen und hatten sogar einigermaßen Glück mit dem Wetter. Nachdem es morgens geschneit hatte, kam dann doch mittags die Sonne raus, auch wenn es noch sehr kalt war.  Aber ein Stop im Brauhaus hat uns wieder aufgewärmt.

Afterwards we took a walk through town and we were lucky concerning the weather. We had snow in the morning but around noon the sun came out, which was really nice, even though it was freezing cold. We went to one of the brewery pubs to have a drink and get warm again.

In der letzten Woche gab es ausserdem Robs Geburtstag zu feiern.  Wir haben zusammen gefrühstückt und Rob hat seine Geschenke ausgepackt, wir haben viel erzählt und gelacht und uns morgens schon mit Kuchen für den Kuchen-Nachmittag mit den Verwandten vorbereitet. :-)

Last week we also celebrated Robs birthday. We had breakfast together and Rob unwrapped his presents, we had a nice chat, laughed about this and that and prepared for the afternoon with loads of cake with our relatives.

Je älter die Kinder desto anders wird die Literatur, die sie lesen. Ich sehe das mit einem lachenden und einem weinenden Auge. Es ist ja völlig logisch dass sie keine Kinder- und Jugendbücher mehr lesen, dennoch habe ich das geliebt, wenn wir zusammen gelesen haben. Hier werden im Moment mit Vorliebe Spionagethriller gelesen. Ich denke ich bin glücklich damit, dass sie überhaupt so viel lesen.

The more grown up the kids get the more different books they read - of course. I loved it when they were little and we read kids books but of course they grow and take interest in other subjects. Rob loves to read books concerning espionage at the time. I think I'm happy about the fact that they read a lot at all.

Kinderbücherschrank - Childrens bookshelf

 

 

 

Vor einiger Zeit hatten wir das Bedürfnis, für unsere Unmengen an Büchern, einen Schrank zu bauen. Ich hatte die Bücher vorher auf Regalen im Wohnzimmer und so häufig wie wir nach Büchern greifen und sie wieder zurücklegen sah es im Regal immer völlig unordentlich aus. Das mochte ich nicht mehr im Wohnzimmer sehen. Rob hat dann unter Anleitung seines Vaters fast komplett alleine eine Schrankwand aus weißem Holz mit Türen davor gebaut. Zusammen haben sie den Schrank eingepasst und nun haben wir eine wunderbare Aufbewahrung für all die vielen Kinder- und Jugendbücher.

Wir sammeln Bücher, zumindest diejenigen, die wir gerne gelesen haben. Ich finde es immernoch schöner, ein Buch zu lesen als am Smartphone oder am Kindle zu lesen. Da geht für mich absolut das Lesegefühl verloren. Geht Dir das auch so oder macht es für Dich keinen Unterschied ob Buch oder Kindle?

A while ago we had the idea to build a cupboard for our books. Before we had all of our books on shelves in the living room but it always looked like a total mess in the shelves because we use our books quite often and nobody ever bothered putting them in correctly. I didn't want that in the living room anymore. Rob then built a big cupboard with doors in front of it out of white wood for us. Thomas helped him and explained a few things but he built it almost completely by himself. They fitted it into our room and now we have a lot of storage for all these many books we have. 

We collect books, well, at least the ones that we enjoyed reading. I still like it much better to read a real book rather than reading on a smartphone or kindle. It's just not the same feeling. Do you feel the same or doesn't it make any difference to you wether you read on a device or a real book?

Unser derzeitiges Vorlesebuch - Our reading book at the time

Wir haben den Kindern immer viel vorgelesen, anfangs Kinderbücher und jetzt, wo sie älter werden, lesen wir Jugendliteratur. Rob ist aus dem Alter raus und liest lieber alleine für sich. Er hat sich den Graf von Monte Christo als Lektüre ausgesucht und wird dazu eine Buchvorstellung machen. Mit Mumpel lese ich immernoch zusammen. Mal lese ich vor, mal liest sie vor. Derzeit lesen wir ein Buch von Auguste Lechner, die in meinen Augen die Geschichte für Jugendliche sehr schön und ausführlich, aber nicht langweilig, beschreibt. Wir haben vor ein paar Tagen mit den Nibelungen angefangen.

We have always read a lot to our kids, children's books in the beginning and now, as they grow older, we read youth literature. Rob rather reads for himself, he doesn't want to be part of our reading sessions anymore which is totally ok for us. He has chosen "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas for his next reading book and he will do a book presentation as soon as he is done with it. I still do read with Mumpel and she still likes that. We read together, I read a part and then she reads onother part. At the time we read a book written by Auguste Lechner. She is a great author for history, she writes for older children and in my opinion she describes history for kids in detail but never boring so its a pleasure to read it. A couple of days ago we've started to read the first story of this book, the Nibelungen.

Das Exemplar ist schon etwas älter, ich habe es schon lange Jahre. Der Graf von Monte Christo ist auf hauchdünnem Papier geschrieben und besteht aus zwei Bänden - I've had this book for very long years, it is quite old and the paper it is written on is very thin so it has a lot of pages and there are two of these books

Cookie ist soooo müde - Cookie is soooo tired

Heute musste Cookie zum Tierarzt, das hat Thomas zum Glück gemacht. Sie hat immer ganz viel Angst und ich habe das beim letzten Mal kaum ausgehalten, den armen Hund die ganze Zeit in Panik zu erleben. Aber es half nichts, sie ließ sich von uns nicht die Krallen schneiden, also mussten wir das machen lassen. Anschließend hat sie sich selbst in ihrem Körbchen zugedeckt und drei Stunden am Stück geschlafen.

Today Cookie had an appointment at the vet and I was so happy to find Thomas go there with her. She is always so very afraid at the vet and the last time I went there with her I found it quite hard to see her in a panic the whole time we spent there. It didn't help though - she had to get her claws cut but she wouldn't let us do it so we had to have the vet do it. After she returned home she cuddled up in her box and went to sleep for three hours.

Eine kleine Blaumeise schaute vor ein paar Tagen bei mir ins Auto, als ich gerade losfahren wollte. Der Piepmatz hatte überhaupt keine Angst und blieb richtig lange sitzen.

A little bluetit looked into my car when I just wanted to leave. It wasn't afraid at all and sat there for a couple of minutes so I had the chance to take a picture of him. 

Bei uns gibt es jetzt einen kleinen Nachmittags-Snack. Ein paar Haferflocken mit Johannisbeeren, Banane und Mandeln. Ich wünsche Euch noch einen schönen Tag. Bis zum nächsten Mal,

Day with books - Büchertag

Wir haben Frühling - endlich. Die Sonne kommt wieder raus und das macht mich ziemlich glücklich nach den langen Wintermonaten. Finally spring is here. The sun is out way more often and I am so happy about that after all those grey winter months.

Ich habe sehr lange hier nichts mehr geschrieben und lange überlegt, ob ich wieder anfangen soll oder nicht. Ich habe diesen Blog begonnen, als die Kinder klein waren und ich ihr Lernen dokumentieren wollte. Auf diesem Weg haben wir alle vom Leben und vom Lernen gelernt und das war sehr schön. Dieser Blog wird weiterhin ein Online-Tagebuch bleiben, indem Du persönliche Einblicke in unser bzw. mein Leben finden kannst. Ich freu mich sehr, dass ich mich jetzt mit dem Schreiben wieder wohlfühle und es wieder anfangen möchte und Du bist herzlich willkommen, Dich mit mir auszutauschen.

I haven't written this blog in a very long time and I have thought about restarting it for quite a while now. Years ago I created this blog when the kids were little and this was supposed to become a documentary of their learning. In the meantime we all learned as a family - by learning and from life and we loved it. This blog is still going to be an online diary which offers you as a reader personal views into our or my daily life. I'm very happy to start blogging here again now and I welcome you to exchange views and experiences with me. 

Hier wird die Bücherliste angelegt - Mumpel is writing her book list

Mumpel hatte heute die Idee, eine Bücherliste anzulegen, von alle den Büchern, die sie im letzten Jahr gelesen hat. Sie hat sich dafür ein Epochenheft rausgesucht und alle Bücher, einen riesigen Berg, auf unserem Eßtisch gestapelt. Am Ende war sie ganz erstaunt, dass die Bücherliste ganze drei Seiten umfasst und noch gar nicht fertig ist. Manchmal ist es doch ganz sinnvoll, so etwas sichtbar zu machen, denn sie war der festen Überzeugung, sie hätte nur ein paar wenige Bücher gelesen.

Mumpel had the idea of creating a book list of all the books that she had been reading throughout the last year. She grabbed a booklet and took all the books she read out of our bookshelf and put them onto our dinner table. In the end she was really astonished about the amount of books she read. Her list is now three pages long and she hasn't yet written down all the books she read. We learned how much sense it can make to take a closer look at things and create such a list to become aware of things. Before she created the list Mumpel was sure that she had only read a handful of books - at the most!

Fachwissen ist gefragt - Expertise for my son

Rob hat sich die Fachbücher seines Vaters geben lassen, um sie sich anzuschauen und sich vorzubereiten. Er hat sich dazu entschieden, im nächsten Herbst mit der Ausbildung zum Tischler zu beginnen und es war sein Wunsch, sich vorzubereiten. Da er öfter schonmal mit Thomas in der Werkstatt ist und die beiden sich oft und gerne über Fachthemen austauschen, können die beiden zusammen schonmal das ein oder andere vorbereiten bzw. ausprobieren und die Theorie mit der Praxis verbinden.

Rob wished to take a look at his fathers expertise books and work through them as he decided to become an apprentice for joinery next year in fall. He likes to be in Thomas' workshop from time to time and work with him or talk assignments through. This way the two of them can combine practical knowledge with the theory of the profession and try out a couple of things. 

Tagebuch schreiben - Writing my diary

Während die Kinder ihre Themen durchgegangen sind, habe ich mir ein paar Minuten Zeit genommen, mein Tagebuch zu schreiben. Ja, ich habe auch noch ein ganz normales Tagebuch, das mit online nichts zu tun hat sondern in das ich so richtig reinschreibe. Ich mag das einfach, Seiten schön zu gestalten und alles runterzuschreiben was so passiert. Es hilft mir, meine Gedanken zu ordnen und ist ein schöner Habitus, finde ich. Davon abgesehen mag ich einfach die Tätigkeit des Schreibens sehr gerne. Schreibst Du auch Tagebuch oder ist Dir das völlig fremd?

While both kids were busy doing their stuff I took the time to write my diary. Yes, I also have a diary which has nothing to do with online but in which I actually write with my pen. I like creating pages in a beautiful way and just like the act of writing. It helps me sort out my thoughts and it has become a nice habit over the years. Do you write a diary, can you relate to what I wrote about writing diaries?

Meine Lieblingszeitschrift - wie klischeehaft :-) (Werbung!) - My favorite magazine - what a cliche :-)

Meine Mutter hat mir vor Kurzem jede Menge Zeitschriften mitgebracht, vor allem ihre alten und gelesenen Landlust Zeitschriften. Da ich sie mir nie selbst kaufe, freue ich mich besonders, wenn meine Mutter sie mir aufbewahrt und ich sie lesen kann. Heute morgen habe ich als erstes einen Kaffee getrunken und darin geblättert. Es macht mir immer Spaß, zu schauen, was man alles aus seinem Garten so machen kann. Vielleicht berührt mich das derzeit auch so sehr, weil wir im Moment keinen Garten haben - ach was heißt im Moment - schon lange nicht mehr. Ich habe darüber auf meinem anderen Blog geschrieben, wenn Du magst kannst Du hier zum Artikel "Mein Garten und ich" kommen.

A couple of days ago my mom gave some of her magazines to me that she had already read. I never buy them myself so I am happy when she collects them for me to hand them over when she is done with them. This morning I sat down for a couple of minutes, had coffee and browsed one of these magazines, called Landlust (WERBUNG). I love to watch photos of other peoples gardens to get new ideas for my own garden. Maybe I love looking at such magazines so much at the time because I haven't had a garden for a long time and I miss my garden very much. I have written about it on my other german blog, if you like you can have a look here.
