A little gardening - Ein bisschen Gartenarbeit

Früher hatte ich im Garten Herbstanemonen. Sie blühen recht spät, wenn andere Pflanzen schon verblüht sind und haben tolle, rosafarbene Blüten. Ich war also am Samstag mit Thomas (und mit Mundschutz) im Gartencenter und habe drei gekauft und sie direkt vor das Hochbeet gepflanzt, so dass ich vom Küchenfenster aus draufschauen kann. 

Years ago we used to have chinese anemones in our garden. They blossom later than other plants and often still have blooms after all the other plants have already lost their blossoms. So I went to the garden center with Thomas on saturday (both wearing a face mask as we have to at the time) and bought three of them. I planted them right in front of our flower bed so I can watch them from my kitchen window.

 Es tut sich was im Vorgarten, der Thymian hat jede Menge lila Blüten bekommen. 

Something is going on in the front garden: thyme has loads of purple blossoms. 

 

 Ich habe Äpfel an meinem Topaz-Baum entdeckt.

Leider sind die Blüten des Birnbaums alle im Frost eingegangen. Nur diese eine scheint es geschafft zu haben, wir bekommen also eine einzige Birne. 

All the blossoms at our pear tree have died when it was cold and frozen outside, only one of them obviously has survived so we are happy to be able to harvest one single pear in fall.

Thomas hat mir den Gartenschlauch mit Kabelbinder an einen Spaten gebunden, so dass ich die ganzen vielen kleinen Pflänzchen besser giessen kann, ohne mich bücken zu müssen. Man darf den Schlauch nicht direkt auf die Blätter halten, damit sie nicht kaputt gehen. Ich habe jetzt seit kurz vor Ostern jeden Tag zwei Stunden lang alle Beete gegossen, damit die Bodendecker und Hortensien, die viel Wasser brauchen, nicht eingehen. Es ist einfach viel zu trocken im Moment. 

Thomas tied the hose to a spade so I don't always have to bend over to water the small tiny little plants. I can't hold the hose with the water in it directly onto the plants, otherwise their leaves will be destroyed. Since shortly before easter I've spent two hours a day in the garden watering all the flower beds and especially all the hydrangea as they need lots of water. Its just to dry outside, no rain in sight.

Flower bed and lawn - Hochbeet und Rasen

In den letzten Wochen sind wir ganz viel im Garten und wir sind auch alle sehr froh, einen Garten zu haben. Was will man auch machen in Zeiten des Coronavirus? Wir halten uns an das Kontaktverbot und beschäftigen uns zu Hause, wie so viele andere Menschen. 

Die Kinder und ich sind mehrfach in der Werkstatt gewesen, um Lärcheholz zu streichen, damit wir unser Grundstück einfrieden können. Wir haben die Bretter in Teakholz gestrichen und dann haben Thomas und Rob den Zaun gebaut, damit wir nicht so viel von dem kaputten Kirschlorbeer der Nachbarn sehen müssen. An dem Tag war es so warm, dass die beiden einen Sonnenschirm in die Erde gesteckt haben, damit sie sich nicht verbrennen. Bald soll die Erdfläche zur Rasenfläche werden!

Throughout the last weeks we have been in the garden quite a lot and we are all really happy to have a garden, especially while coronavirus is everywhere and we can't have contact to other people. We keep ourselves busy at home like so many other people do. 

The kids and I have been to the workshop several times to paint larch wood for our fence. We painted them in a color called teak and then Thomas and Rob built this wooden frence from it and put it in front of the ruined and therefore ugly cherry laurel of the neighbors so we don't have to see that much of it. It was really hot on the day they built the fence so they put a parasol into the soil to prevent themselves from getting a sunburn. Soon the soil area will be covered with lawn! Can't wait for that!

Was für eine Unordnung! Während die Jungs den Zaun bauen, räumt Mumpel das Carport aus und sortiert den Müll aus, der sich dort seit Jahren angehäuft hat. Das sieht erstmal schlimm aus, aber jetzt ist es wieder einigermaßen ordentlich. Ich habe in der Zeit Salate vorbereitet, damit wir abends grillen konnten. 

What a mess! While the boys built the fence, Mumpel sorted out the no longer needed stuff that we had in the shed and cleaned and mucked it out. It looks really bad on this picture but now its all sorted again and looks much better. 

 

 Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das mit Rasen richtig gut aussehen wird. 

I can imagine how nice it will look when we have a lawn. 

Es kann losgehen. Das Gartenbau-Unternehmen ist da und hat schon mit Erde angefüllt und glatt gezogen. Die Walze liegt auch schon im Beet.

 Jetzt heißt es regelmäßig gießen, damit uns der neue Rasen nicht vertrocknet. 

Now we are to water the new lawn twice a day so it doesn't dry out. 

 

 Wir sind richtig glücklich mit dem neuen Rasen. Der Garten sieht jetzt ganz anders aus.

Mit dem Hochbeet geht es auch voran. Das Wühlmausgitter und die Folie zu allen Seiten haben wir in das Beet gemacht und es auf Fundamente an den Platz gestellt, an dem wir es haben möchten, direkt vor den Zaun. Jetzt kann die Erde rein. 

We are done with the flower bed. Foil is in and covering the complete inside of the flower bed so the wood is protected. We moved it to the place in front of the fence where we wanted it. Now we can put soil into it. 

  

Fast fertig. Jetzt fehlt nur noch die Bewässerung in dem Hochbeet, die an das Wasser angeschlossen wird. Dann kann es endlich losgehen und wir können es bepflanzen. Wir sind schon fast sehr spät dran damit, aber schneller ging es einfach nicht. 

Almost done, the only thing missing is the water hose going into the bed so it can be hooked to the water pipe in the garden. After that we can start to grow our veggies in there. We are almost a bit late in the year for that but it didn't work out any faster.

All kinds of herbs - Jede Menge Kräuter

Heute morgen war ich ganz früh schon im Bioladen. Dort gehe ich seit wenigen Wochen wieder öfter kaufen, weil wir alle mit den Demeter-Waren ein besseres Kaufgefühl haben, als mit den herkömmlichen, pestizidbelasteteren Waren. Das geht nicht immer, weil es teurer ist, aber ich freue mich jedesmal, wenn ich dort hinfahre. Heute habe ich unter anderem diese Tomatenpflanze für unser Beet mitgebracht.

Early this morning I drove to our local organic shop to get some veggies. I try bying organic stuff more often again as we all have a better feeling with eating vegetables that are not as much pesticide contaminated as the regular stuff is. It's more expensive so we can go there every so often but I like being in that store a lot. Today I got us a tomato plant for our flower bed - besides all kinds of other herbs. 

Sauerampfer, Petersilie, Schnittlauch und Basilikum habe ich für unsere Zinkwanne geholt. Mit dem Basilikum muss man aufpassen, der möchte nicht von oben gegossen werden und braucht ausreichend Platz, sonst geht er ganz schnell ein.

Sorrel, Parsley, Chives and Basil is what I got for our zinc pan outside. I will plant it in there as we do each year. I know I have to be careful with the basil. It has to be watered from the bottom instead of pouring water onto its leaves and it needs enough space to grow otherwise it dies fastly. 

Vor dem Basilikum ist im Moment noch jede Menge Platz, doch ich hoffe, dass bald die Kapuzinerkresse sich ihren Weg nach oben bahnt, dann ist die Wanne schön bunt mit Kräutern, die man essen kann. 

There is still plenty of space in front of the basil but I hope that soon nasturtium seeds that I put in there will make their way on top. I think it will look nice with all colorful herbs in the pan once everything has grown. 

Andere Kräuter aus dem Samentütchen habe ich zu mehreren in verschiedene Töpfe gesät zum Anwachsen. Unter anderem sind dort Bohnenkraut, Dill, Liebstöckel, Majoran, Ringelblume und Zuckererbse, Borretsch und Oregano drin. Ich bin mal gespannt, ob das was wird, sonst muss ich sie doch in kleinen Töpfen auf der Fensterbank vorziehen. In den letzten Jahren hat das immer geklappt aber dieses Jahr haben wir ganz viele Amseln im Garten, die die Erde benutzen, um damit Nester zu bauen und ständig mit ihrem Schnabel darin herumwühlen. 

I put in all kinds of different seeds that we had left into these pots. There is savory, dill, lovage, marjoram, marigold, sweet pea, borage and oregano in them. I can't wait to see if this actually works or not. If it doesn't I have to get small pots and grow the seeds in my kitchen before planting them into the flower bed. Although I've always done it this way and it always worked I'm a bit concerned now because we have many blackbirds in our garden this year and they use all the soil for building their nests obviously and pick in the soil with their beaks. 

Mumpel hat eine Liste gemacht, damit wir wissen, welche Kräuter wir später auf den Boden im Selbstversorgergarten pflanzen können weil sie nächstes Jahr wiederkommen und welche ins Beet müssen und im nächsten Jahr neu gepflanzt werden müssen. 

Mumpel has made us a list with herbs and veggies that grow for just one year and the ones that will return for years. That way we know which herbs can be planted onto the ground into our veggie garden and which ones have to go into a flower bed and have to be bought and planted again next year. 

 

Cookie lag, während wir gepflanzt und gewässert haben, in der Sonne und hat geschlafen. Sie ist ein richtiger Sonnenanbeter. Jeder noch so kleine Strah, der durchs Fenster scheint, wird genutzt. 

While we were in the garden planting and watering everything Cookie found herself a place in the sun on the wooden floor and went to sleep there. She just loves the sun and whenever she finds sunshine coming into the living room she uses this spot as a napping area.

 Heute lesen und schreiben wir etwas über die häuslichen Arbeiten der Frauen bei den Germanen. Wir nehmen dazu unser "Was - ist - Was" Buch zur Hand. 

Today we do some reading about what women had to do in and around the house during the time of the teutons. 

 

Zum ersten Mal gab es heute Erdbeeren im Bioladen. Die mache ich zum Mittagessen. 

First time they had strawberries in the organic shop. I will make them for lunch today.

Mumpel hat ein neues Hobby - sie bastelt im Moment gerne sogenannte Squishies. Ihre Freundin hat Ihr davon erzählt, dass man sich diese Spielzeuge zum in der Hand drücken selber machen kann. Dann sind sie auch nicht giftig, so wie es diejenigen sind, die man kaufen kann, da sie aus Plastik bestehen und jede Menge Weichmacher enthalten. 

Mumpel has got a new hobby - she loves making squishies. Her friend told her of this way of crafting these toys instead of buying them. This way they are not toxic because they are not made from plastic don't have any plasticizers in them like the ones do that you can buy.

Mumpel malt einfach Bilder auf Papier, jeweils eine Vorderseite und eine Rückseite, füllt in die Mitte Wolle ein und klebt dann alles mit Tesafilm zu, so dass die Außenhaut des Squishies komplett aus Tesa besteht. 

Mumpel draws two pictures for one squishy - one for the front page and one for the back side and then puts wool into it. After that the squishy is being wrapped all over with scotch tape.

Wir haben mittlerweile so viele von diesen kleinen Gesellen, dass sie gar nicht mehr alle in die große Box dafür passen. Das hier auf den Bildern ist nur eine kleine Auswahl. Aber ich freue mich, dass es ihr so viel Spaß macht, die Squishies zu basteln.  

Meanwhile we have so very many of these toys that they don't even fit into the large box we have for them. What you see on the pictures is just a small selection of them. But I'm really happy with the fact that Mumpel has so much fun creating the squishies. 

 

Mit den Römern sind wir jetzt endgültig durch und lesen jetzt einiges zu den Germanen, schließlich gehörten sie in die gleiche Zeit. Dazu haben wir verschiedene Bücher zur Auswahl, von "Was-ist- Was" über "Die Sagen der Germanen" bis zu einem kleinen Runenbüchlein.

We have completed our section about the Romans and went straight on to learning a few things about the Teutons as they belong to the same time in history. We have different books we read from like a book about the legends of the Teutons as well as an informative book that expains the time and a little booklet with runes in it.

Dieses kleine Büchlein haben wir vor Jahren aus einem unserer Dänemark Urlaube mitgebracht, als wir unter anderem Bork Havn, eine Wikingersiedlung besucht haben. Seitdem ist es fester Bestandteil unserer Bibliothek. 

This little booklet about the gods and goddesses of the Teutons we brought back home from one of our trips to denmark years ago. When we spent our vacation there we visited a Viking museum named Bork Haven which the kids loved. Eversince then we have it in our library.

Happy birthday, Rob - Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Rob

Kurz nach Ostern haben wir Rob's Geburtstag gefeiert. Er ist schon 17 Jahre jung geworden, ich kann es, wie in jedem Jahr, nicht fassen, wie schnell die Zeit vergangen ist. Mumpel hat ihm ein Bild gezeichnet von einem Clownfisch. Wie man sieht, hatte ich noch das richtige Papier parat, um die Geschenke einzupacken, aber das hat keinen gestört. :-) Er hat sich vor allem Zubehör für seinen PC gewünscht. 

A couple of days after easter we celebrated Rob's birthday. He turned 17 and as always on birthdays of the kids I just can't believe how fast time went by. Mumpel drew a picture for him with a clown fish on it. As you can see I did'nt have any proper paper left to wrap his presents in so this christmas wrapping paper had to do. It was worth a laugh, though and he liked it. 

Mumpel hatte am Vortag diese riesige Portion Muffins mit Schokolade und Sauerkirschen für Rob vorbereitet und einige von ihnen mit Mandelsplittern verziert. Die Muffins waren wirklich sehr lecker.

Mumpel baked these chocolate and cherry muffins with almonds on top for him. They really were delicious.

Abends haben wir wieder zusammen im Garten gesessen und Feuer in der Feuerschale gemacht. Es war ein sehr gemütlicher Ausklang des Tages. 

At night we all sat outside in the garden around our fireplace. It was the perfect end of a really nice day.

Wir haben ein neues Projekt für den Garten! Ich habe Euch doch vor kurzem erzählt, dass wir beim Keller ausmisten jede Menge Saatgut gefunden haben, um daraus die verschiedensten Gemüse und Kräuter zu ziehen. Nun haben wir einen neu angelegten Garten, nachdem wir jahrelang auf einer Baustelle gelebt haben, aber wir haben noch kein Hochbeet, in das wir all die Pflanzen zum Essen pflanzen könnten. Ich habe mich also belesen, was Hochbeete angeht und diese drei Bücher in unserem Bücherregal gefunden und darin geschmökert. Wir hatten vor Jahren schon Hochbeete und wir haben auch schonmal eine Ackerparzelle auf einem Biohof bewirtschaftet für eine Saison, doch irgendwie liegen diese Erfahrungen schon einige Jahre zurück und ich wollte mich dringend wieder einlesen. Das Kosmosbuch über Hochbeete und das Buch Gärtnern im Quadrat fand ich am Besten.  

We have a new project for our garden! I told you some posts ago that when mucking out our basement we found all kinds of different seeds in little bags to grow veggies and herbs from them. Now, after years of having to live on a construction site, we have this new garden but we don't have a raised flower bed to grow our veggies in yet. I found three books about raising plants in raided flower beds and spent some evenings reading in them to find out how to accomplish this project best. Years ago we had these types of flower beds and we even grew veggies on a piece of field belonging to an organic farm but all of these experiences seem to be so far in the past that I had the feeling of needing new information about how to do this and I found it in the books. 

Ich bin so froh, dass Thomas sofort Zeit gefunden hat, uns ein Hochbeet zu bauen. Ich hatte nur mit ihm darüber gesprochen, dass ich das schön finden würde und wir waren zusammen im Garten und haben uns vorgestellt, wo es passen könnte. Am nächsten Tag hat er als Überraschung die Holzkonstruktion für das Beet mitgebracht. Er hat es aus Lärche gebaut, oben auf dem Rand kann man sitzen, falls man eine Pause beim Gärtnern braucht. 

I'm so happy Thomas found the time to build it right away. Actually I only talked to him about how nice it would be to have a flower bed like this and we went through the garden together imagining where we could possibly put it. The next day after work he came home with this wooden construction. He built it from larch wood, if tired from gardening we can sit on the edge of it.

Ich habe das Holz in der Farbe Teak mit Holzlasur gestrichen, damit es vor Schädlingen geschützt ist und damit es nicht so schnell dunkel wird, was es würde, wenn man es unbehandelt der Witterung aussetzen würde. Die Lärche wird dann ganz schwarz. So sieht es besser aus und passt zu unserem Zaun, der die gleiche Farbe hat. Es steht auf dem Boden direkt vor dem Zaun. 

I painted the larch wood in a color called Teak to protect it from pests and also to keep it from getting too dark too soon. Without the color on it it would look black in a couple of months due to weather. We find it looks better this way, we had painted the fence around the house in the same color. The bed is now standing right in front of the fence on the ground.

Jetzt überlegen wir als nächstes, was wir anpflanzen wollen und was für eine Pflanzfolge sinnvoll wäre. Außerdem gucken wir uns an, welche Sorten zusammen in ein Beet gepflanzt werden können und wieviel Abstand dazwischen liegen muss. In den Büchern finden sich einige Beispiele. 

Next thing to think about is what we actually want to plant and in which order during the year we want to grow the different veggies and also we have to find out which sorts go together in one bed and which ones we should better not plant next to each other. Another thing to look at is the distance to put between seeds. There are a couple of examples given in the books.

Die Holzkonstruktion muss von innen mit einer Folie ausgekleidet werden, damit die nasse Erde das Holz nicht zerstört. Dafür müssen wir leider eine Plastikfolie nehmen. Ich habe eine Folie ohne Weichmacher bestellt, die zwar etwas teurer ist, aber was bringt uns das Anpflanzen gesunder Lebensmittel, wenn wir auch die Weichmacher aus der Folie essen. So haben wir auf jeden Fall ein besseres Gewissen. Außerdem habe ich ein Wühlmausgitter bestellt, das unten rein kommt. Leider sind die Sachen wegen Lieferschwierigkeiten aufgrund der Coronasituation noch nicht angekommen, wir müssen also noch ein wenig warten, bis wir so richtig loslegen können. Aber wir freuen uns drauf!!

I ordered foil on the internet to put into the flower bed. We have to put a plastic foil in it to protect the wood from being destroyed through the wet soil in it. I looked for a special foil that has no plasticizers in it - this foil is a bit more expensive but makes much more sense to us. There is no sense in growing our own healthy veggies and at the same time eating non healthy plasticizers with it. I also ordered a sort of rabbit wire to put on the ground of the bed to keep mice from walking up and eating everything. Due to coronavirus these things haven't been delivered yet so we have to wait a couple more days before we can actually start planting but we are very much looking forward to it!
