Our friend invited us out for her birthday and she wanted to go on a trip. So we decided to go visit the village of Cheddar in North Somerset which is only approximately fifty minutes away from Bristol. We went to see the Cheddar cheese dairy. It is open for visitors all year around and has a little museum that shows the history of cheese making. 

Unsere Freundin hat uns zu ihrem Geburtstag eingeladen, mit ihr einen Ausflug zu machen. Wir sind nach Cheddar gefahren, ein kleines Dorf, das ungefähr fünfzig Minuten von Bristol entfernt in der Grafschaft North Somerset liegt. Dort haben wir uns die Käserei angeschaut. Sie ist das ganze Jahr über für Besucher geöffnet und hat ein kleines Museum, das die Geschichte der Käseherstellung erzählt.

And what did my kids answer when our friend asked them what they have learned from the day at the cheese company? Their answer was: "That cheese stinks!"

Und was haben meine Kinder geantwortet, als unsere Freundin sie fragte, was sie an diesem Tag in der Käseproduktion gelernt haben? Ihre Antwort war: "Dass Käse stinkt!"

We found Cheddar is a really nice little village situated at the edges of the Cheddar gorge. We drove through this limestone gorge with cliffs at both sides of us. This is actually the biggest gorge in the United Kingdom. Rob and Mumpel were especially impressed not only by the rocks but also by the many goats climbing up and down the hills and coming really close to us.

Wir fanden, Cheddar ist ein hübsches kleines Dorf, gelegen an den Rändern der Cheddarschlucht. Wir sind durch dies Kalksteinschlucht gefahren, mit Felswänden zu beiden Seiten. Tatsächlich ist das die grösste Schlucht im Vereinigten Königreich. Rob und Mumpel waren besonders von den freilebenden Ziegen beeindruckt, die die Felsen hoch und runterkletterten und uns ziemlich nah kamen.

Many Cafes and Attractions like the Cheddar Museum were unfortunately closed. We are planning on coming back during spring or summer season to be able to look at Cheddar Man, a human skeleton which is supposed to be around 9000 years old. It is in fact the only complete skeleton found in Britain. Also a visitors magnet is the cave with wonderful stalagmites and stalagtites to look at.

Viele Cafes und Attraktionen wie das Cheddar Museum hatten leider geschlossen. Wir möchten auf jeden Fall einmal im Frühling oder Sommer hierherkommen, um uns den Cheddar Man anzuschauen. Dieses Skelett ist rund 9000 Jahre alt und ist das einzige in England komplett gefunde Skelett aus prähistorischer Zeit.  Ein weiterer Magnet für Besucher ist die Höhle mit wunderschönen Stalagmiten und Stalagtiten.

National Museum and Art Gallery

This is the National Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol. We spent a day there with our friends. The Museum contains an egyptian exhibition. Rob and Mumpel were really interested in the explanation of the Rosetta Stone it included.

Das ist das National Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol. Wir haben hier einen Tag mit Freunden verbrcht. Das Museum hat unter anderem eine ägyptische Ausstellung. Rob und Mumpel fanden die Erläuterungen zum Rosetta Stein sehr interessant.

They also have a rather big exhibition of paintings. This one up here was my very favorite one because of the beautiful colors in it. I like the combination of the red, green and yellow colors and its oriental atmosphere.

Es gibt auch eine größere Bilderausstellung. Das Bild hier oben ist für mich das Schönste gewesen. Ich mag die Farbkombination aus rot, grün und gelb und die orientalische Atmosphäre des Bildes.

Das Bild hat den Kindern gut gefallen. Sie mögen Strandbilder und haben beide gesagt, sie finden die Blautöne schön.

A Lego Christmas - Lego Weihnachten

I know I'm a little late but anyways - to all our family and friends near and far and readers we wish you all a late happy christmas. We hope you've all enjoyed the season and had a good time with your families or friends. 

Ich weiß, ich bin ein bisschen spät dran - trotzdem wünschen wir allen, unserer Familie, Freunden nah und fern und unseren Lesern ein verspätetes glückliches Weihnachten. Wir hoffen, ihr habt es alle schön gehabt an den Festtagen, mit euern Familien oder Freunden.

The kids had a lego christmas this year. Rob only had one single wish for christmas and it was this lego heavy-duty crane. He loves building the lego technic sets. This one is remote control. Imagine, for two and a half days he did nothing but sit on the floor in the living room, building this crane. He got up early in the mornings and worked on it until the evening, taking only short breaks to have some food. The crane came with six thick booklets, so it was quite a bit of work. But as it usually is - if the kids are really interested in something and have a really strong inner motivation, it won't feel like work at all. It was all fun for him and now he is happy everything works and he can play with it. Building is just a thing that fulfills him naturally at the time.

Dieses Jahr hatten die Kinder ein Lego Weihnachten. Rob hat sich nur eine einzige Sache gewünscht und zwar diesen mobilen Schwerlastkran von Lego. Er liebt die Lego Technik Sets. Dieser Kran ist ferngesteuert. Stellt euch vor, zweieinhalb Tage lang hat er nichts anderes gemacht, als im Wohnzimmer gesessen und seinen Kran zusammengebaut. Früh morgens ist er aufgestanden und hat daran bis abends gearbeitet. Pausen hat er nur gemacht, wenn er Hunger hatte. Sechs dicke Bücher wurden durchgearbeitet, es war also wirklich ein Haufen Arbeit. Aber - wie das gewöhnlich so ist, wenn Kinder fasziniert von etwas sind und eine starke innere Motivation haben - es fühlte sich für ihn keine Sekunde wie Arbeit an. Es war ein Riesenspaß und nun ist er glücklich, dass er damit spielen kann. Bauen ist einfach etwas, das ihn natürlicherweise erfüllt. 

This was Mumpel's present that she wished for. All of the sudden she had a strong wish for building as well. And she knew exactely what she wanted. The Lego city police station. During our many trips through the lego sections of different shops she found out that she liked the lego city sets the best. This was what she wanted and she started building together with her brother on christmas eve. Here and there she needed a little help and Rob never got tired of giving her advice. Two days of happy lego fun for the kids. 

Mumpel hat auch genau gewusst was sie sich wünscht, nämlich die Lego city Polizeistation. Plötzlich ist sie auch sehr stark am Bauen interessiert. In der Vorweihnachtszeit waren wir oft in Spielzeugläden und Mumpel hat herausgefunden, dass ihr die Lego city Sets am Besten gefallen. Noch am Weihnachtsabend hat sie neben Rob angefangen, sie aufzubauen. Ab und zu kam sie  nicht gut weiter, aber Rob ist nie müde geworden, ihr zu helfen. Zwei komplette Tage Lego-Bau-Spass für die Kinder. Ab jetzt wird damit gespielt.
