Wir haben ein neues Projekt für den Garten! Ich habe Euch doch vor kurzem erzählt, dass wir beim Keller ausmisten jede Menge Saatgut gefunden haben, um daraus die verschiedensten Gemüse und Kräuter zu ziehen. Nun haben wir einen neu angelegten Garten, nachdem wir jahrelang auf einer Baustelle gelebt haben, aber wir haben noch kein Hochbeet, in das wir all die Pflanzen zum Essen pflanzen könnten. Ich habe mich also belesen, was Hochbeete angeht und diese drei Bücher in unserem Bücherregal gefunden und darin geschmökert. Wir hatten vor Jahren schon Hochbeete und wir haben auch schonmal eine Ackerparzelle auf einem Biohof bewirtschaftet für eine Saison, doch irgendwie liegen diese Erfahrungen schon einige Jahre zurück und ich wollte mich dringend wieder einlesen. Das Kosmosbuch über Hochbeete und das Buch Gärtnern im Quadrat fand ich am Besten.
We have a new project for our garden! I told you some posts ago that when mucking out our basement we found all kinds of different seeds in little bags to grow veggies and herbs from them. Now, after years of having to live on a construction site, we have this new garden but we don't have a raised flower bed to grow our veggies in yet. I found three books about raising plants in raided flower beds and spent some evenings reading in them to find out how to accomplish this project best. Years ago we had these types of flower beds and we even grew veggies on a piece of field belonging to an organic farm but all of these experiences seem to be so far in the past that I had the feeling of needing new information about how to do this and I found it in the books.
Ich bin so froh, dass Thomas sofort Zeit gefunden hat, uns ein Hochbeet zu bauen. Ich hatte nur mit ihm darüber gesprochen, dass ich das schön finden würde und wir waren zusammen im Garten und haben uns vorgestellt, wo es passen könnte. Am nächsten Tag hat er als Überraschung die Holzkonstruktion für das Beet mitgebracht. Er hat es aus Lärche gebaut, oben auf dem Rand kann man sitzen, falls man eine Pause beim Gärtnern braucht.
I'm so happy Thomas found the time to build it right away. Actually I only talked to him about how nice it would be to have a flower bed like this and we went through the garden together imagining where we could possibly put it. The next day after work he came home with this wooden construction. He built it from larch wood, if tired from gardening we can sit on the edge of it.

Ich habe das Holz in der Farbe Teak mit Holzlasur gestrichen, damit es vor Schädlingen geschützt ist und damit es nicht so schnell dunkel wird, was es würde, wenn man es unbehandelt der Witterung aussetzen würde. Die Lärche wird dann ganz schwarz. So sieht es besser aus und passt zu unserem Zaun, der die gleiche Farbe hat. Es steht auf dem Boden direkt vor dem Zaun.
I painted the larch wood in a color called Teak to protect it from pests and also to keep it from getting too dark too soon. Without the color on it it would look black in a couple of months due to weather. We find it looks better this way, we had painted the fence around the house in the same color. The bed is now standing right in front of the fence on the ground.

Jetzt überlegen wir als nächstes, was wir anpflanzen wollen und was für eine Pflanzfolge sinnvoll wäre. Außerdem gucken wir uns an, welche Sorten zusammen in ein Beet gepflanzt werden können und wieviel Abstand dazwischen liegen muss. In den Büchern finden sich einige Beispiele.
Next thing to think about is what we actually want to plant and in which order during the year we want to grow the different veggies and also we have to find out which sorts go together in one bed and which ones we should better not plant next to each other. Another thing to look at is the distance to put between seeds. There are a couple of examples given in the books.

Die Holzkonstruktion muss von innen mit einer Folie ausgekleidet werden, damit die nasse Erde das Holz nicht zerstört. Dafür müssen wir leider eine Plastikfolie nehmen. Ich habe eine Folie ohne Weichmacher bestellt, die zwar etwas teurer ist, aber was bringt uns das Anpflanzen gesunder Lebensmittel, wenn wir auch die Weichmacher aus der Folie essen. So haben wir auf jeden Fall ein besseres Gewissen. Außerdem habe ich ein Wühlmausgitter bestellt, das unten rein kommt. Leider sind die Sachen wegen Lieferschwierigkeiten aufgrund der Coronasituation noch nicht angekommen, wir müssen also noch ein wenig warten, bis wir so richtig loslegen können. Aber wir freuen uns drauf!!
I ordered foil on the internet to put into the flower bed. We have to put a plastic foil in it to protect the wood from being destroyed through the wet soil in it. I looked for a special foil that has no plasticizers in it - this foil is a bit more expensive but makes much more sense to us. There is no sense in growing our own healthy veggies and at the same time eating non healthy plasticizers with it. I also ordered a sort of rabbit wire to put on the ground of the bed to keep mice from walking up and eating everything. Due to coronavirus these things haven't been delivered yet so we have to wait a couple more days before we can actually start planting but we are very much looking forward to it!
